What Aggravates Acid Reflux

Oatmeal with banana good for Acid reflux.

Acid reflux occurs when the sphincter at the base of the esophagus isnt working well, allowing fluid from the stomach to enter the esophagus. The worst foods for reflux can worsen painful symptoms, while other foods can soothe them, says UH gastrointestinal surgeon Leena Khaitan, MD

Diet changes can significantly affect acid reflux and allow you to avoid other treatments, Dr. Khaitan says.

Quick Relief For Heartburn

If you are experiencing heartburn, you may ease the problem by:

  • Standing up straight: Lying down may put more pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter or LES. Standing up reduces this pressure and decreases the escape of acidic contents from the stomach upwards through the food pipe. This is the reason it is advised to not lie down or sleep right after eating.
  • Drinking non-fat milk: Non-fat milk can act as a temporary barrier between the gut lining and the acidic stomach contents. This may provide relief in symptoms. Full fat milk should not be consumed for heartburn as it can aggravate acid reflux. Low-fat yogurt also provides a soothing effect in heartburn along with providing probiotics or good bacteria that aid digestion.
  • Loosening up your clothing: Tight clothes can put pressure on the tummy causing acid reflux or heartburn
  • Taking ginger: Ginger has several medicinal properties. It is anti-inflammatory and also helps in the digestion of food. Sipping some ginger tea may prevent and relieve heartburn
  • Taking over the counter antacids: Antacids provide relief by neutralizing the acidic contents. They provide rapid relief from heartburn.
  • Drinking dilute lemon water: A small amount of lemon juice mixed with water and honey can help ease the symptoms of heartburn.

Other medications for heartburn, including the H2 receptor blockers and proton pump inhibitors or PPI, may provide long term relief from heartburn.

How Can A Banana Cause Heartburn

Bananas are usually low in acid, so sometimes, they can be recommended as a fruit that can help reduce acid reflux.

But you should know that ripe bananas have a pH value of 5, which does get classified as a mildly acidic fruit. Therefore, if eaten on an empty stomach or eaten in large amounts, bananas may cause acid reflux which in turn causes heartburn.

Another way that a banana can cause heartburn is if the banana is not ripe yet when you eat it. This might cause a trigger within your body that causes acid reflux.

This trigger can also be caused by an underlying disease known as GERD. GERD is also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Eating raw bananas or eating them on an empty stomach can cause your stomach acid to try and travel up into the esophagus, causing GERD.

Fight Heartburn With Healthy Food

Add the right foods to your diet. They could really help with your heartburn. But there are limits to what they can do.

Remember that good foods can’t counteract the effects of trigger foods. “Eating a little ginger won’t stop you from getting heartburn after a big dinner of a fatty steak, a salad with tomatoes, a couple of glasses of wine, and a coffee,” Kuemmerle says.

And while eating a low-acid diet is a good strategy, it may not be enough on its own. For some people it’s not so much the acids in the stomach, but the reflux of other stuff in gastric juices — like bile — that trigger heartburn, he says.

“The specific causes of heartburn vary a lot from person to person,” Kuemmerle says. “That’s why treatment always needs a personalized approach.”

Banana Contains Vital Nutrients Like Potassium And Proteins

For starters, banana contains potassium which is alkaline therefore reducing the acidity in the stomach. It also contains sulphur and protein. Thus it helps in digestion. Other than that, it contains protease inhibitors which help in getting rid of certain bad bacteria in the stomach. Lastly, it is a perennial source of minerals and Vitamin B6 which strengthen the oesophagus.

Do Bananas Help Acid Reflux

Just like in the case of yogurt probiotics, bananas are a good source of beneficial prebiotics.

This is the other important reason to include bananas in a diet for people who are dealing with acid reflux and related symptoms.

And, even better, you can couple the beneficial effect of bananas and yogurt by taking fruit-flavored yogurts or make several different combinations with these two important foods able to counter reflux and related symptoms.

To be more clear, prebiotics are carbohydrates that cant be digested by the human body, even though they bring many benefits to health.

Their main target is the gut, and they are closely related to probiotics.

In fact, prebiotics supply food for probiotics, meaning that they help the growth, action, and well-being of beneficial probiotic bacteria.

Bananas are also good for stomach health, and this has important implications for people suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease.

In fact, a banana generally contains 3.1 grams of fiber and this ingredient helps to make digestion easier.

Fibers also have an important action to solve constipation, another frequent condition for people who suffer from reflux.

As you can see, there are many reasons to consider eating bananas for heartburn, as well as for many other digestive conditions.

Does Banana Reduce Acidity

The relationship between bananas and acid is one of the most discussed topics by people who suffer from heartburn and acid reflux.

There are some things to point out, as follows.

The interesting thing is that, because of the pH value of bananas , it may happen that a doctor suggests not to eat this fruit because it could cause reflux-related symptoms.

This is a wrong suggestion, because even though bananas are mildly acidic foods, they have a protective effect against reflux and most related symptoms, just because of their properties.

This is quite similar to what happens for apple cider vinegar, an acidic natural products that, however, its one of the most important natural remedies to relieve heartburn and reflux.

Ginger May Help To Soothe Inflammation In The Esophagus

Is Banana good for acidity ?

Ginger is a fragrant root that is commonly viewed as a stomach-soothing ingredient but this spicy food can actually help with heartburn as well.

“Ginger is a natural anti-inflammatory and can help to reduce the inflammation of the esophagus that is associated with GERD,” registered dietitianKelly Kennedy told INSIDER.

If you find that raw ginger has too much kick to eat by itself, try tossing a tablespoon of freshly grated ginger into a smoothie or adding a few slices of the root to your tea.

A Morning Smoothie That Will Help With Acid Reflux

I make this Anti-Reflux Energizing & Healing Morning Smoothie for my son almost every morning. He was born with a rare birth defect in his esophagus called Esophageal Atresia. You can read our story HERE. A big percentage of EA survivors battle constantly with acid reflux. In fact, I was told by the specialist that my son would need to take medications for it for life!

Honestly, I wasnt too thrilled with that idea. I would never recommend going against your doctors recommendations, but for me personally, it just didnt feel like the right way to go. All medications can cause side effects, especially when taken long-term. So I started looking into natural remedies and ways to help with reflux other than meds. Of course, I discussed them with my sons doctor, too.

Well, he has been meds free since he was 2.5 years old! With more and more studies linking popular heartburn and GERD meds to heart and kidney problems, Im really happy I made that call. Again, though, this is NOT medical advice. You need to look at the pros and cons and talk to your own specialists to determine the best treatment for your condition.

En espaƱol | Heartburn is a condition that many people will experience at least once in their lifetime. More than just a minor nuisance, this uncomfortable burning sensation can sometimes creep up into your throat leaving an unpleasantly bitter taste. The pain caused by heartburn can range from mild to so severe that its sometimes mistaken for heart attack pain.

And heartburn is a symptom of acid reflux, which occurs when stomach acid flows back up into your esophagus the tube that connects the throat and stomach. In some cases, acid reflux progresses to gastroesophageal reflux disease , or a more serious form of reflux. Common signs of GERD include frequent heartburn, coughing, wheezing, chest pain and regurgitation particularly at night.

While over-the-counter and prescription medicines are available, lifestyle changes can sometimes help those with only occasional acid reflux. The Mayo Clinic advises losing excess weight, eating smaller meals, and avoiding alcohol and nicotine. But dietary tweaks also can be key when trying to alleviate symptoms.

Here are five foods to try.

2. Melons. Like bananas, melons also are a highly alkaline fruit. They are a good source of magnesium, which is found in many medicines for acid reflux. Furthermore, melons have a pH of 6.1, making them only mildly acidic. Especially good are cantaloupe and honeydew melon.

Foods To Avoid In Your Smoothie

Doctors recommend avoiding- or at least limiting- foods that are high in fat, salt, or spices. I doubt you were planning to put pizza, French fries, or potato chips in your blender, right? So, when it comes to your smoothie, youll want to look farther down the high-risk foods list to find out what to avoid. Depending on the severity of your reflux, these foods include:

  • Citrus fruits
  • Chocolate
  • Peppermint
  • Tomato juice

While citrus fruits and tomato juice sound like obvious foods to avoid, chocolate and peppermint are a bit surprising. After all, dark chocolate is great for a sore throat, and peppermint is an amazing remedy for nausea. While you dont have to give them up entirely, its best to keep them out of your acid reflux smoothie.

Dr. Ekta Gupta of Hopkins Medical Center explains, Moderation is key since many people may not be able to or want to completely eliminate these foods. But try to avoid eating problem foods late in the evening closer to bedtime, so theyre not sitting in your stomach and then coming up your esophagus when you lay down at night.

Banana Helps Cure Indigestion

Indigestion or dyspepsia is one of the major culprits behind acid reflux. It not only causes constipation but also decreases in the pressure of LES, leading to its relaxation and thus, heartburn.

Banana has been known to treat diarrhea effectively and is said to have deleterious effects if consumed during constipation or indigestion.

However, studies have demonstrated that banana is a potential remedy for not just diarrhoea but also indigestion and it is one of the only few carbohydrate-containing foods that is tolerated by the stomach during dyspepsia.

Banana has been proven to be a rich source of simple digestible carbohydrates which not only fulfil the energy demands of the body during indigestion, but also heal the gut.

It makes an effective diet for infants and children and is digested easily during gastric problems as compared to other nutritional energy sources.

Another study revealed that dried banana powder was effective in healing functional dyspepsia and its associated heartburn in human patients as compared to other medications.
