Acid reflux occurs when the sphincter at the base of the esophagus isnt working well, allowing fluid from the stomach to enter the esophagus. The worst foods for reflux can worsen painful symptoms, while other foods can soothe them, says UH gastrointestinal surgeon Leena Khaitan, MD

Diet changes can significantly affect acid reflux and allow you to avoid other treatments, Dr. Khaitan says.

Quick Relief For Heartburn

If you are experiencing heartburn, you may ease the problem by:

  • Standing up straight: Lying down may put more pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter or LES. Standing up reduces this pressure and decreases the escape of acidic contents from the stomach upwards through the food pipe. This is the reason it is advised to not lie down or sleep right after eating.
  • Drinking non-fat milk: Non-fat milk can act as a temporary barrier between the gut lining and the acidic stomach contents. This may provide relief in symptoms. Full fat milk should not be consumed for heartburn as it can aggravate acid reflux. Low-fat yogurt also provides a soothing effect in heartburn along with providing probiotics or good bacteria that aid digestion.
  • Loosening up your clothing: Tight clothes can put pressure on the tummy causing acid reflux or heartburn
  • Taking ginger: Ginger has several medicinal properties. It is anti-inflammatory and also helps in the digestion of food. Sipping some ginger tea may prevent and relieve heartburn
  • Taking over the counter antacids: Antacids provide relief by neutralizing the acidic contents. They provide rapid relief from heartburn.
  • Drinking dilute lemon water: A small amount of lemon juice mixed with water and honey can help ease the symptoms of heartburn.

Other medications for heartburn, including the H2 receptor blockers and proton pump inhibitors or PPI, may provide long term relief from heartburn.

How Can A Banana Cause Heartburn

Bananas are usually low in acid, so sometimes, they can be recommended as a fruit that can help reduce acid reflux.

But you should know that ripe bananas have a pH value of 5, which does get classified as a mildly acidic fruit. Therefore, if eaten on an empty stomach or eaten in large amounts, bananas may cause acid reflux which in turn causes heartburn.

Another way that a banana can cause heartburn is if the banana is not ripe yet when you eat it. This might cause a trigger within your body that causes acid reflux.

This trigger can also be caused by an underlying disease known as GERD. GERD is also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Eating raw bananas or eating them on an empty stomach can cause your stomach acid to try and travel up into the esophagus, causing GERD.

Remember that good foods can’t counteract the effects of trigger foods. “Eating a little ginger won’t stop you from getting heartburn after a big dinner of a fatty steak, a salad with tomatoes, a couple of glasses of wine, and a coffee,” Kuemmerle says.

And while eating a low-acid diet is a good strategy, it may not be enough on its own. For some people it’s not so much the acids in the stomach, but the reflux of other stuff in gastric juices — like bile — that trigger heartburn, he says.

More than just a minor nuisance, this uncomfortable burning sensation can sometimes creep up into your throat leaving an unpleasantly bitter taste. The pain caused by heartburn can range from mild to so severe that its sometimes mistaken for heart attack pain.

And heartburn is a symptom of acid reflux, which occurs when stomach acid flows back up into your esophagus the tube that connects the throat and stomach. In some cases, acid reflux progresses to gastroesophageal reflux disease , or a more serious form of reflux. Common signs of GERD include frequent heartburn, coughing, wheezing, chest pain and regurgitation particularly at night.

While over-the-counter and prescription medicines are available, lifestyle changes can sometimes help those with only occasional acid reflux.
