What About Other Conditions

Is Pickle Juice For Heartburn? | Doctor Sameer Islam

Heartburn is technically a symptom of other conditions, such as acid reflux, GERD, and indigestion.

While each of these conditions has distinct characteristics, theyre all related to stomach acid moving back up through your esophagus in a way it isnt supposed to, leading to discomfort.

As such, pickle juice isnt likely to help alleviate these other conditions either. No research indicates that consuming pickle juice, or other acids, is an effective treatment for acid reflux, GERD, or indigestion.

Youre better off treating these conditions with the many remedies known to be more reliable.

SUMMARY

Heartburn is a symptom of GERD, acid reflux, and indigestion, for which pickle juice is not a scientifically proven treatment either.

  • avoiding lying down too soon after a meal
  • keeping your head slightly elevated when going to sleep at night
  • reducing your meal size to prevent overeating and indigestion
  • wearing loose-fitting clothes, especially around the waist, as not to encourage acid reflux
  • making dietary modifications to reduce your consumption of carbonation and acidic foods like tomatoes, citrus fruits, and vinegar
  • taking other medications that may be prescribed by a healthcare provider

If youre experiencing persistent heartburn symptoms and are unable to manage them with lifestyle changes, its a good idea to speak with your healthcare provider for additional direction, especially if youre pregnant.

Is Pickle Juice Good For Heartburn

Food tolerance varies across people. If a person is non-tolerant towards acidic food, then consuming the pickle juice can worsen the condition. Also, it is to be noted that pickle juice contains a high amount of sodium, which should be kept in mind before consumption. The body needs everything in moderation, and too much of anything might increase the problem.

In case the body reacts positively to pickle juice, then it is advised to take only a few sips to cure the problem. If the acid reflux is highly concentrated, then drinking ½ cup of the juice might be helpful.

But you should never drink more than that as it might cause adverse effects.

Pickles Can Reduce Muscle Cramps

Ok, this one is just weird. However, the research shows that when tested between pickle juice and water, participants found their cramps lasted a whole 49 seconds less when they were consuming the pickle juice. Since muscle cramping can be a common ailment for many, especially athletes, maybe its time we start stocking up on pickles as remedy!

Its thought that because the sodium is high in pickle juice, perhaps its the electrolytes doing their work again to balance the body and help it heal from its cramps. Other experts adhere to the idea that its the vinegar that helps the muscles to relax and stop contracting. Either way, it sounds like a win!

Tightening Of The Sphincter Muscle

Vinegar is an important constituent of apple cider vinegar along with other mild acids like tartaric acid and citric acid. It is a well known anti-heartburn drink being consumed since decades.

The vinegar per se or apple cider vinegar is also thought to tighten the sphincter muscle.

The sphincter muscle allows acid to reflux back because it gets lose and can no longer guard the stomach entrance.

Evidence from researches suggests that the astringent effects of vinegar work to contract the muscles of the stomach, including the sphincter muscle thereby making it tight enough to not allow the acid to reflux back in the oesophagus and cause heartburns.
