How To Avoid Reflux

Acid Reflux & Heartburn : Jaw Symptoms of GERD

There are some things you can do to keep the heartburn away.

  • Stay away from alcohol, cigarettes, aspirin/anti-inflammatories and citrus , Bauman advised.
  • And if you experience heartburn at night, try giving gravity a hand. Raise the head of your bed on blocks so gravity can help keep your stomach contents down in the stomach, Bauman said.
  • Another possible remedy can be not to eat close to bedtime or late at night. When your stomach is full of food or busy digesting food, try letting it finish that work before heading to bed.
  • Some over-the-counter medications can also help.
  • See your doctor to discuss your symptoms.

    Overeating And Back Pain

Dumping large amounts of food in your stomach puts enormous strain on the digestion.

The tell-tale signs of digestive distress as a result of overeating are stomach aches, bloating and indigestion.

As the stomach bloats and expands it puts stress on the spine and back muscles causing discomfort and pain.

But you can easily remedy the problem with a simple lifestyle change.

Rather than sitting down to 3 heavy meals a day or binge eating at the down town all you can eat buffet…

You can still eat as much as by eating smaller quantities frequently throughout the day.

Your digestion will thank you for it as its better able to cope with smaller quantities of food and liquid.

What Are The Most Common Causes Of Indigestion And Constipation

Indigestion, the feeling of abdominal fullness or burning that sometimes follows a meal, and constipation, the ongoing difficulty passing a bowel movement, are unpleasant but usually temporary problems experienced by most people at some stage in their lives. When indigestion and constipation occur simultaneously, however, the sufferer can feel as though he is in a state of digestive misery. Understanding the common triggers of each can be key to reducing or even preventing future attacks by this unpleasant duo. Factors which may lead to both constipation and indigestion can include dairy consumption, irritable bowel syndrome, medications, and, in rare cases, serious illnesses of the digestive tract.

One of the most common causes of simultaneous indigestion and constipation is the consumption of dairy products. In some cases, such digestive problems may result from an inability to process the sugars present in dairy products, a condition known as lactose intolerance. While dairy consumption by lactose intolerant individuals may initially cause indigestion accompanied by diarrhea, the fluids and body salts lost through these loose bowel movements can lead to constipation. Even those who normally do not have a lactose sensitivity can develop digestive issues after consuming large quantities of dairy products.

    Neurological Causes Of Disturbed Digestion

Neurological causes of gastric and intestinal function in the context of neuropathy are not uncommon. Often these are not just stomach or intestines. The perception of sensitive stimuli in the legs or arms can be reduced. There may be discomfort of the feet or hands. The muscle power can generally be reduced. Careful investigations of the nerve tracts indicate, for example, disorders of nerve conduction in the legs and / or arms. Additional disorders of bladder function, circulatory regulation, sleep or sweating are not uncommon.

Diseases of the central nervous system may also be accompanied by disturbances of stomach and bowel functions. Particular attention in this context applies to neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinsons disease. Already at an early stage, not infrequently years before the onset of Parkinsons disease, sufferers may suffer from frequent constipation and constipation. Some forms of dementia can be associated with disorders of bowel function. As a result of a disease of the central nervous system, disorders of the stomach and intestine often persist chronically. Its not just weight loss that can affect your physical fitness. Also, the absorption and timely effect of drugs can be disturbed by a decreased activity of the stomach or intestine .

Heartburn Or Heart Attack When To Sound The Alarm

Can Gerd Cause Sore Jaw Vomiting Flu Without

Heartburn is a very common condition that affects about 42 percent of Americans. In fact, I experienced it myself shortly after dinner last night. It is a symptom of gastroesophageal reflux that you typically feel as pain or burning in the chest. When you have heartburn, some of the acid in your stomach comes up into your esophagus, causing that pain. Taking an over-the-counter antacid can bring relief in moments.

Chest pain, however, is also a common sign of heart disease. Heart disease is life-threatening and is diagnosed in about 12 percent of Americans . It is one of the top causes of death for Americans. A heart attack, a condition in which the heart muscle is deprived of oxygen because of blocked blood vessels, can strike suddenly and be fatal if not treated promptly.

If youre experiencing pain or burning in your chest, how do you know its just heartburn and not something more? We spoke with a pair of UVA doctors for some clarity.

    • Passing gas through your backside
    • Quick, sharp pains that suddenly come and end

If its heartburn, itll happen soon after eating or it can awaken you from sleep after a couple of hours. Youll feel the burning stomach acid moving up from your stomach into your throat. Youll probably taste something sour in your mouth as well.

Taking antacids is one of the best home remedies of chest pain due to gas.

    Use Antacids & Ppi’s Sparingly

Can acid reflux cause ear pain? – Dr. Satish Babu K

Antacids and Proton Pump Inhibitors are popular acid reflux medications to help relieve indigestion and heartburn.

Antacids work by either neutralizing stomach acid or forming a raft on top of the stomach contents to stop the acid flowing into the esophagus.

Popular brands are Gaviscon and Rennies.

People with severe GERD symptoms often resort to stronger drugs such as PPI’s. Instead of neutralizing stomach acid, PPI’s reduce the production of stomach acid.

According to the World Health Organisation more than $10 Billion is spent on acid reflux medications each year!

Like antacids, PPI’s can be bought over the counter. However, stronger PPI’s require a doctors prescription.

PPI’s Antacids are generally safe when taken correctly. The problem is most people don’t.

Because the relief is fast acting many people develop a dependency and thats when the problems start.

Remember, these drugs only relieve the symptoms they don’t address the cause and an over-reliance on them may mask a serious problem or create one.

Nexium, the most popular PPI is one of the top selling drugs in history with over $72 billion in Sales in the US since its inception in 1992.

Growing evidence shows reducing levels of stomach acid makes it harder for the digestive to break down hard to digest foods.

When Should You Call 911 For A Heart Problem

At certain times, calling 911 right away is a must. If youre having chest pressure or chest tightness that started that day, you should not wait to go to your general practitioner, says Dr. Cho. Go to the emergency room.

You should also call 911 and get help right away if you have chest pain or discomfort along with any of the following symptoms, especially if they last longer than five minutes:

    • Pain or discomfort in other areas of the upper body, including the arms, left shoulder, back, neck, jaw, or stomach.
    • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath.
    • Sweating or cold sweat.
    • Light-headedness, dizziness, extreme weakness or anxiety.
    • Rapid or irregular heartbeats.

What To Do If You Notice Heart Attack Symptoms

If you do suspect you might have heart attack symptoms and some do appear weeks or months before a heart attack dont discount them out of hand or let them linger for too long. Women often think its something else, says Dr. Cho. The sad thing is, women do tend to have more blockages in their heart when they do need to have something done.

In fact, women tend to get heart disease later than men do. Men get in their 50s and 60s, and women get it in their 60s and 70s, says Dr. Cho. Women always get it 10 years later because of the effect of estrogen. The sooner you report a problem, the better chance you have of catching an issue before it becomes a full-blown heart attack. If you experience any of these symptoms, take note and visit your doctor as quickly as possible. Its very important that you not become your own doctor but let somebody else be your doctor, Dr. Cho says.

    Heartburn Back Pain Nausea

Nausea and back pain can be present together in many cases.

However, on most occasions, this has nothing to do with acid reflux and/or heartburn.

In fact, there are some conditions, like gallbladder issues that are the real cause of this pain.

In the majority of cases, people without reflux and/or heartburn report nausea and lower back pain.

This is important because in general terms people who suffer from nausea and heartburn report mid-back or even upper-back pain.

You cant take this as an absolute rule, even though this happens in most cases.

The cervical spine is connected to 1000’s of nerves.

A pinched or trapped nerve refers to a type of damage often caused by a vertebrae, herniated disc or bone applying pressure to the nerve or group of nerves.

If its a pinched nerve you should feel these sensations…

    • Pins and needles
    • Tingling

Most pinched nerves can be treated at home by stretching, applying heat, improving posture or avoid sitting for long periods.

    Common Symptoms Of Heartburn

Acid Reflux & Heartburn : Symptoms of GERD & Chest Pain

If you’ve got a burning feeling in your chest just behind your breastbone that starts after you eat, it might be heartburn. The symptoms could last from a few minutes to several hours.

Heartburn begins when stomach acid splashes up into your esophagus, a tube that connects the back of your throat and stomach. Besides the burning feeling in your chest, you may also get:

    • Chest pain, especially after you bend over, lie down, or eat
    • Burning at the back of your throat
    • Fluid at the back of your throat that tastes hot, sour, acidic, or salty
    • Long-term cough, sore throat, or hoarseness

Telling your doctor about these symptoms is usually all they need to make a diagnosis of heartburn. But they may ask you to take special tests to find out how severe the problem is or to keep an eye on your treatment.

    Acid Reflux And Headaches

While there are no studies showing that gastrointestinal disorders can lead to headaches, there are publications that illustrate how gastric problems, in particular acid reflux, can coincide with headaches.

A study involving 43,782 patients studies the possible prevalence of headaches in patients with gastrointestinal problems. Compared to diarrhea and constipation, patients with acid reflux symptoms report higher prevalence of headaches.

Another study involving 1,832 migraine patients were tested for heartburn and GERD symptoms. Of the group, 22% reported GERD diagnosis, 11.6% reported heartburn, and another 15.8% reported previously undiagnosed reflux symptoms.

These studies show that patients with acid reflux problems also tend to experience headaches, although there are no clear reasons why. Although unclear, doctors confirm that treating gastrointestinal problems also alleviates headache symptoms, which is how acid reflux-related headaches are treated.

    Low Stomach Acid Symptoms

Can low stomach acid cause gastritis? The consequences of low acid symptoms or hypochlorhydria include indigestion symptoms, gastritis symptoms, and low stomach acid pain.

Hydrochloric acid is normally secreted by the stomach to perform a very important function: to enhance the breakdown and subsequent absorption of the food and nutrients consumed. So part of the cost of low stomach acid is malabsorption or an inability to properly digest and absorb vitamins and minerals. This is not only what causes heartburn and leads to the indigestion symptoms, gastritis symptoms, and other symptoms described above it also leads to osteoporosis, weakness, fatigue, cramps, anemia, and other nutritional disorders.

Stomach acid also serves a protective function, killing various pathogenic microorganisms that might otherwise cause infection in the gastrointestinal tract. The strong acid kills the various fungi and bacteria that are on the foods we eat. With too little stomach acid, you lack this protective function and you get an overgrowth of bad bugs, such clostridium difficile or candida in your GI tract. The result of low stomach acid is often a loss of the friendly bacteria, nausea, gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, and other symptoms.

Consult your primary physician to develop a plan to treat low stomach acid.

Detecting A Different Kind Of Jaw Pain

Many of the common signs of heart attack are well known: tightness or pressure in the chest, discomfort in the arms and shoulders, shortness of breath. Theres another to add to the mix, one that may not prompt an immediate 911 call or trip to the ER: jaw pain.

Sometimes the manifestation of a heart attack or some cardiac event can be felt in the jaws, the teeth and the neck. Its not just the left side it can happen on the right side, too, especially for females, says Dr. Steven Bender, clinical assistant professor and director of the Center for Facial Pain and Sleep Medicine at Texas A& M College of Dentistry. The pain is a sign. Its an indicator that something is happening right then, right in that moment. It may come and go depending on the severity, just like people who say I thought it was heartburn, and it comes and goes. Its the same thing with the jaw pain. It may come and go, and people may not attribute it to a cardiac event.

The head, neck and jaw pain experienced during a cardiac event is different than the chronic pain experienced by many of Benders patients, who often suffer from temporomandibular joint disorders. Patients with TMD typically can put their finger on the exact area that hurts, whether its the jaw, the jaw joint or the side of the head, and the pain often flares up when yawning or chewing.

You always have to put it into context with risk factors, Feghali adds.

Its a two-way collaboration, he explains.
