Coffee Heartburn: Caffeinated or Decaffeinated Coffee ...

    March 6, 2015 By EricT_CulinaryLore

I have a confession to make. This may seem shocking, but it is the truth: Ive been drinking coffee since I was five years old! My folks would start us children out with a lot of milk and a little coffee . It is what in the South we call coffee milk and its related to Cambric Tea. The coffee would slowly increase and the milk would decrease. They didnt do this because they thought it important that we drink coffee. We would beg for it because we saw the adults drinking it and, in those days, nobody saw anything wrong with it.

Well, despite all the zig-zag in the reputation of coffee, I still see nothing wrong with it. Except, I cant stop. I MUST have my coffee in the morning. Once I stopped for an entire year. The headaches at the beginning were terrible. After that, it was a year of misery, never feeling like myself. I wont qualify this feeling, but I finally gave in and got a cup of coffee one day , and it was like someone flicked a switch, the lights were back on!

    How Is Decaffeinated Coffee Made

It is thought that decaf coffee first came to light in the 1900s as an incoming shipment of coffee beans was submerged in seawater during transport, which naturally removed some caffeine.

A short time later, the trader who came across the accident made these unroasted decafbeans again by using a chemicalsolvent called benzene, a key component in gasoline and is also present in volcanoes.

Nowadays, coffee beans is much safer and not as carcinogenic. The bad news is that chemicals arent completely eliminated from the equation.

The begins with unroasted beans, which are then immersed into water for a few hours to dissolve the caffeine.

Then, it follows three main ways of the caffeine extraction process:

    • The first one is that it contains those nasty chemicals. Methylene chloride is used for paint removal or ethyl acetate, utilized in nail polish remover and glue removal products. These chemicals extract caffeine from water either by mixing them into the mixture of water and coffee, getting rid of the water in the beans, or then adding the beans to the water mix. The last step is a similar procedure: evaporating the water to ensure that the flavor stays inside the beans.
    • Another technique, known as the Swiss water process, employs charcoal filters to eliminate caffeine from the water. It is chemical-free.
    • The third method also helps keep things free of chemicals using liquid carbon dioxide to dissolve the caffeine.

What Gerd Is And What It Means For You

Most people experience heartburn at some point, but before you can bring it under control you have to know whats causing it. If you experience heartburn once a week or less its likely just normal acid reflux, a condition that causes stomach acid to push back up into the esophagus creating a painful burning sensation. When this happens more than twice a week, its probably something more serious known as gastroesophageal reflux disease . This can be a painful condition that can affect the quality of life of those suffering from the disease.

But If You Want A Hot Brew

Now, thats all very well, but youre not going to want a chilled brew when the snows falling, and its sub-zero outside. Dont despair!

By avoiding a fine grind, you can still brew a hot cup of Joe thats lower in acid. For example, using a French press with coarsely ground beans will produce a brew thats relatively low in acid. Thats because the more coarsely ground the beans, the less acid theyll secrete into the water.

If you like milk or cream in your coffee, thats a great way of diluting the acidity of your drink. Why? Well, the calcium contained in dairy has powerful antacid qualities.

If you take your coffee black, you could try adding a flavorless calcium powder to your brew to neutralize the acid content.

Why Would Coffee Give You Heartburn

Why Purity Coffee Does Not Cause Caffeine Headaches or Heartburn

Coffee may give you heartburn when youre consuming caffeine beyond healthy doses.

According to the US Food and Drug Administration and European Food Safety Authority , a healthy individual can consume up to 400 milligrams of caffeine per day.

Remember that this is the limit that one shouldnt cross but since tolerance among individuals differs, many might experience side effects beyond 100-200 milligrams.

Heartburn is a commonly reported after-effectof gastrointestinal symptoms after drinking coffee. Many studies have considered the acidity of coffee beans to be the main factor behind the condition. However, other researches have shown that something else in the coffee contributes to the factor.

Coffee is made of complex molecules including caffeine, chlorogenic acid, N-alkanoyl, hydroxytryptamine, etc. None of these irritate your stomach individually. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of the compounds may prevent inflammation and acid production.

Its the unique blend of the chemical constituents that trigger a signal for stomach cells to start producing acid, leading to gastric acid section.

Thus drinking coffee in large doses, the muscles that connect the stomach to the esophagus get relaxed and creates an opening for the stomach to release acid. This causes acid reflux and heartburn for the consumer.

These acids, coupled with caffeine, contribute to the addiction thats typical of avid consumers.

The presence of natural acids, however, is also a good thing.

In fact, they also contain some powerful antioxidants that have a very beneficial effect on health.
