More than just a minor nuisance, this uncomfortable burning sensation can sometimes creep up into your throat leaving an unpleasantly bitter taste. The pain caused by heartburn can range from mild to so severe that its sometimes mistaken for heart attack pain.

And heartburn is a symptom of acid reflux, which occurs when stomach acid flows back up into your esophagus the tube that connects the throat and stomach. In some cases, acid reflux progresses to gastroesophageal reflux disease , or a more serious form of reflux. Common signs of GERD include frequent heartburn, coughing, wheezing, chest pain and regurgitation particularly at night.

While over-the-counter and prescription medicines are available, lifestyle changes can sometimes help those with only occasional acid reflux. The Mayo Clinic advises losing excess weight, eating smaller meals, and avoiding alcohol and nicotine. But dietary tweaks also can be key when trying to alleviate symptoms.

Here are five foods to try.

Researchers at New York Medical College reviewed two years of patient charts and found that those who were instructed to follow a plant-forward Mediterranean diet had the same reduction in acid reflux symptoms as those who were prescribed proton pump inhibitors like Prilosec. Lead study author Craig Zalvan, M.D., FACS, explains that, unlike animal proteins, plant-based protein is not easily broken down in the stomach often being absorbed in the intestinesand thus reduces the amount of acid that’s produced during digestion. Plus, the Mediterranean diet has ample other health benefits, including for your heart, weight and brain health. Not to mention, it’s delicious delicious.

Changing Your Eating Habits

Developing healthier eating habits, losing weight if necessary, and avoiding foods that increase symptoms of GERD may make heartburn less likely to occur. Take your spouse or partner along with you when you go to your doctor to discuss diet habits. It will be easier to make changes in your diet if your family understands what you need to do and why.

Changes you may want to make include avoiding chocolate, peppermint, and alcohol. These can all make GERD worse by relaxing the valve between the esophagus and the stomach. It also may be a good idea to eat smaller, more frequent meals.

If you are overweight, lose weight. Being overweight puts additional pressure on your stomach and increases the likelihood of heartburn occurring. Losing just 2.5 to 4.5 kilograms can help.

Certain foods can be associated with reflux. Though they will not cause GERD, eating these foods can make the symptoms worse, and avoiding them can help reduce heartburn. These include citrus fruits, mint , fatty and fried foods, garlic and onions, spicy foods, and tomato-based foods like spaghetti sauce and pizza. Some people notice that their symptoms get worse after drinking coffee, tea, soda, or anything with caffeine. If you notice that your symptoms are worse after eating a specific food, you may want to stop eating it and see if your symptoms get better.

Eating Right For Reflux

While diet is not the whole answer, it is always foundational and can provide healing to inflamed tissues and symptom relief.

Lowering the inflammation in the gut through diet will increase immune strength and greatly support and speed the healing process.

You should avoid the following when planning breakfast:

  • Omelets, eggs, or hash browns fried in butter or oil
  • Pastries, such as croissants and doughnuts
  • Juices, such as orange, grapefruit, or tomato
  • Coffee or anything with cocoa

You can still enjoy a breakfast that is full of variety and that is acid reflux friendly. The following are sample breakfast menus:

  • Breakfast #1 1 cup of hot oatmeal cereal, 8 ounces of skim milk, ½ cup of papaya slices, 2 slices whole-wheat bread, and 1-tablespoon margarine.
  • Breakfast #2 1 English muffin, 1-tablespoon margarine, 8 ounces of skim milk and ½ cup sliced peaches.
  • Breakfast #3 1 ½ cups puffed wheat cereal, 8 ounces skim milk, 2 slices of whole wheat toast, 1 tablespoon margarine, 1 small banana
  • Breakfast #4 1 cup of bran flakes cereal, 8 ounces skim milk, 1 English muffin, 1-tablespoon margarine, and 1 cup of fresh or frozen strawberries.

Many people who have acid reflux find that having smaller meals, instead of a larger amount of food can help keep symptoms under control.

Functional Medicine View Of Reflux

Theres an alternate theory in functional medicine, that it is low stomach acid and NOT high stomach acid that causes GERD and reflux.

The idea is that the LES gets loose when stomach acid secretion are lower than normal. And that a sufficient level of acid is what signals the LES to stay tightly shut.

One of the most common causes of low stomach acid is a bacterial infection of the stomach called h pylori.

Regular testing at your doctors office is not sensitive enough to catch this inflammatory and acid lowering infection. I use a highly sensitive functional lab test with clients that identify h pylori along with any other gut infections that it can lead to. The test I use is called the GI Map.

Stomach acid kills and protects you from pathogens like parasites as well as bacterial and fungal overgrowth. When acid is low it leaves the gut vulnerable to infections.

Heartburn: Why It Happens

A muscular ring between the end of the esophagus and the beginning of the stomach normally keeps stomach acid where it belongs — in the stomach. But in people with frequent heartburn, this area, the lower esophageal sphincter muscle , may not prevent stomach acid from splashing up into the esophagus.

Does this mean you just have to live with heartburn? No! A recent survey conducted by the National Heartburn Alliance revealed that 92% of frequent heartburn sufferers point to food as the primary cause of their digestive discomfort.
