What Is Acid Reflux

Easy Diet Changes to Keep Acid Reflux Away

Acid reflux, often referred to as heartburn, is one of the most common digestive complaints, affecting approximately one in five UK adults. For many of these people, occasional heartburn or regurgitation is an unpleasant experience, but doesnt progress to anything more serious. Its typically described as a pain or burning sensation in the chest which comes on after eating. A typical trigger scenario might be bending to load the dishwasher after eating a rich, heavy or spicy meal.

For those with frequent or severe heartburn, it may be the presentation of a potentially more problematic condition known as gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Consuming Aloe Vera Can Sometimes Help Reduce Symptoms Of Acid Reflux

Aloe vera might be known for being a key ingredient in creams meant to soothe sunburns, but it can also be useful for reducing the symptoms of acid reflux, including heartburn.

“Aloe vera is famous as a natural healing agent and also appears to reduce gastric acid levels naturally. It is available as a living plant but the leaves or liquid form are sometimes sold separately in grocery and health food stores,” bariatric surgeonDr. Michael Jay Nusbaum told INSIDER. He also said the liquid form of aloe can be used as a thickening agent when preparing certain dishes.

Liquid aloe vera can have a slightly sour taste, so you may want to add a drizzle of honey if you plan to consume it undiluted. And if you want your aloe vera to be as fresh as possible, you can keep a live plant in your home and remove its leaves as needed.

Diet For Acid Reflux: 10 Meal Plan Ideas To Get You Losing Weight

When you suffer from chronic acid reflux, your doctor often recommends certain lifestyle changes to try to help minimize the frequency of your reflux, one of which may be weight loss. In fact, if youre overweight and you have acid reflux, its likely youve already heard this. Thats because being overweight puts a lot of extra pressure on the muscle in our esophagus meant to prevent stomach acid from splashing back up into the esophagus and/or throat. This muscle, called the lower esophageal sphincter, is weakened over time by this pressure and eventually stops functioning properly, which is what results in chronic reflux or GERD. Naturally, losing weight is a great way to reduce the pressure on your LES and give it a better chance at working the way it was intended to and hopefully minimizing your reflux.

Easier said than done, right? Losing weight can be difficult when exercising only makes your acid reflux worse, and dieting with acid reflux just seems too complicated to even attempt. We know it can be tough, but with just a little thought and creativity you could be well on your way to a healthier you. Breakfast Food To Avoid

Acid reflux symptoms may be triggered by spicy foods, fatty foods, fried foods, mint, chocolate, tomato-based foods, onion, garlic, coffee, alcohol, and citrus fruits. Follow these tips to avoid these common breakfast foods:

  • High-fat breakfast meats such as sausage and bacon should be avoided.
  • Omelets, eggs, and hash browns can cause problems because they may be fried in butter or oil, making them high in fat. Some dishes may include onion or spicy peppers.
  • Pastries such as doughnuts may be high in fat and it’s better to choose low-fat options.
  • Orange juice, grapefruit juice, and tomato juice.
  • Bloody Marys are spicy, tomato-based, and contain alcohol, and should be skipped.
  • Coffee and cocoa will affect some people, so you may need to avoid them.

Another factor is simply to have smaller meals, as meals with a larger amount of food and calories can trigger acid reflux.

Fatty foods take longer to break down than their healthier counterparts. The stomach is forced to produce more acid in order to properly digest these foods, leading to heartburn.

Foods considered high in fat include anything deep fried. Ham, bacon, french fries, onion rings, and just about anything dripping with oil are clear examples of foods to avoid when experiencing acid reflux.

Gerd Diet Plan: Best & Worst Foods + Natural Remedies

By Jillian Levy, CHHC

Gastroesophageal reflux disease causes daily persistent heartburn, also called acid reflux, in nearly 1 in 5 American adults. This chronic condition, caused by inflammation and dysfunctions of the stomach, leads to tissue damage that erodes the esophagus. Why might someone develop GERD or acid reflux? A large body of research shows that root causes of GERD and risk factors include: obesity, untreated food allergies, leaky gut syndrome, smoking, high stress levels and poor circulation.

Because of all the risks associated with long-term use of GERD and acid reflux/heartburn medications, many people choose to successfully treat GERD naturally. They make lifestyle changes and switch to a healthier diet. Diet Changes For Gerd

Proper treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease always begins with a visit to a healthcare professional to obtain an accurate diagnosis. It is important to recognize that chronic reflux does not get better on its own. Over-the-counter remedies may provide short-term symptom relief, but can mask an underlying disease if used long-term.

Symptoms of GERD

Just about everyone has had heartburn that uncomfortable burning feeling in the chest after eating a heavy meal at some point in their life. But, while occasional heartburn is nothing to worry about, heartburn that occurs more than once a week, becomes more severe, or occurs at night and wakes you from sleep may indicate gastroesophageal reflux disease . And, a visit to the doctor is advised.

Treatment for GERD may include medications advised by your doctor and certain diet and lifestyle changes. A combination of approaches, and some trial and error, may be necessary.

Diet and lifestyle changes often begin with what to avoid. These include things that can trigger or worsen symptoms.

Examples of things to reduce or steer clear of in your diet include:

  • High fat foods
  • Alcohol
  • Citrus and tomato products

While no proven GERD diet exists, the following foods may help you ease or avoid symptoms.

Making Breakfast Easy: 5 Tips For Acid Reflux Sufferers

Tip #1: Keep a Food Diary. Not all foods create the same reactions in people. Experiment with certain foods and see which ones aggravate your symptoms. Knowing how certain breakfast foods interact with your stomach makes it easier to plan meals in the future.

Tip #2: Dont Lie Down Immediately After Eating. Go for a walk or sit up and use the computer. Lying down can cause indigestion, which can make acid reflux worse.

Tip #3: Take Antacids. Over-the-counter antacids are available to help keep acid attacks at bay. Take a recommended dose after eating breakfast to prevent stomach contents from travelling up the esophagus.

Tip #4: Eat Less, More Frequently. Overeating is a trigger of acid reflux. Eating less more frequently can prevent a sensitive digestive system from producing too much stomach acid at a time. Eat small snacks in-between meals or divide a big breakfast into two smaller servings/

Tip #5: Look For Alternatives. Are there certain breakfast staples you cant do without? Its still possible to enjoy them by identifying key ingredients that make the food acidic. Craving for french toast? Swap full-fat milk with skim milk or soy milk. Skip the butter and use coconut oil instead.

Eating the right kind of breakfast is just one way patients can keep acid reflux under control. Get in touch with us to learn more about acid reflux, both chronic and short-term, and how to deal with these accordingly.

Details Make A World Of Difference

One of the hardest things to give up for many people who suffer from acid reflux is coffee.

Especially that first cup when you wake up in the morning! However, as it turns out, not every coffee bean is the same nor is every coffee roast the same!

Dark roast coffees are far less acidic than light roast coffees. Therefore, they are less likely to cause acid reflux symptoms, especially if you drink your coffee in moderation .

Sumatran beans are the least acidic coffee bean. If you get dark roast Sumatran coffee, you should have a coffee that will not affect your acid reflux much, unless you have a severe case or over indulge.

Orange juice is another example where the details matter.

Freshly squeezed orange juice is not usually as acidic as the highly processed frozen concentrates or the processed orange juice you buy in the carton.

Some people who suffer from acid reflux can’t drink processed orange juice. However, they are able to tolerate a small glass of fresh squeezed orange juice.

This is especially useful if you are one of those people who needs an OJ fix in the morning.
