    Tips When Medication Causes Heartburn

If your heartburn is caused by a medicine, here are tips for finding relief:

    1. Donât stop taking any prescription medication without first talking with your doctor.

    2. With any medication, donât take more than the recommended dose. Check the label.

    3. Pay attention to when and how you take the drug. Some medications and supplements should be taken right after a meal to make heartburn less likely. Others should be taken on an empty stomach. If you are unsure, ask your doctor or pharmacist when to take each of your medications.

    4. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to review everything you are taking. âItâs very important to let them know not only about your prescriptions, but about any vitamins, minerals, and over-the-counter products you are taking,â says Heather Free, PharmD, a pharmacist in Washington, DC. Your health professional may be able to change the dose of a medication, switch you to a different medication, or suggest other ways to ease your heartburn.

    5. Ask if you can change the way you get your medication. For example, if you take an NSAID for arthritis, you might be able to switch from a pill to a cream that is less likely to cause heartburn.

    6. Don’t lie down right after you take certain medications. You should stay upright, for instance, for at least 30 minutes after taking bisphosphonates and at least 15-20 minutes after taking anti-anxiety medication or sleep aids in order to prevent heartburn.

Common Habits That May Associate Acid Reflux With High Blood Pressure

There are certain medical conditions, lifestyle habits, and traits that patients with acid reflux and high blood pressure have in common. For example, obesity is a risk factor for both conditions.

Alcohol Use: Having more than two drinks a day can temporarily increase your blood pressure and long-term use can lead to long-term increases. Several studies have confirmed that those that consume alcohol have higher instances of GERD than those who do not. The more you drink, the higher your risk for both conditions.

Being Overweight: Obesity is one of the major risk factors for both conditions. For high blood pressure, the more you weigh the more blood your body requires forcing more pressure on the artery walls. For acid reflux, the higher your BMI the more severe your symptoms.

Family History. Both conditions tend to run in families.

Medical Conditions. Certain medical conditions may increase the risk of both conditions including pregnancy, diabetes, and sleep apnea.

Stress. For acid reflux, stress may make symptoms worse. In hypertension, stress can lead to dramatic, short-term increases in blood pressure.

Tobacco Use. In acid reflux, tobacco increases the production of stomach acid, reduces saliva production, irritates the esophagus, and may impair the function of the lower esophageal sphincterthe muscle responsible for blocking stomach acids from entering the esophagus.

Tobacco immediately raises blood pressure and can damage the lining of the artery wall.

    Gerd And Hypertension: Linked

To try to assess how often the two conditions occur simultaneously, a small study published in the September 2018 issue of the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology looked at a group of people with hypertension. It found that 44 percent also had GERD, and that reflux attacks and blood pressure spikes were connected. When they took proton-pump inhibitors , a type of acid reflex drug that reduces stomach acids, both their GERD symptoms and blood pressure improved.

“In this study, GERD is associated with increased risk of high blood pressure, or hypertension, and blood pressure can actually improve with treatment of the acid reflux,” explains William J. Bulsiewicz, MD, a gastroenterologist in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, and author of the forthcoming book Fiber Fueled. “The question is ‘why?'”

“At the moment, we don’t have a clear answer, only theories,” Dr. Bulsiewicz says. “One possibility is that acid reflux activates the sympathetic nervous system, which is essentially our adrenal system. When activated, our heart pumps faster and our blood vessels clamp down, leading to increased blood pressure,” he explains.

“The other theory,” he adds, “is that there is a common nerve connection in the brain that regulates both digestive function and cardiovascular reflexes, and therefore may lead to the co-existence of these issues.”
