Heartburn And Nausea Early Pregnancy

Subtle And Obvious Signs Of Labor

9-10 WEEK PREGNANCY UPDATE | Nausea, Heartburn, Crazy Dreams

If dealing with more heartburn doesnt necessarily mean labor is on the way, then what are some of the less-known signs of labor? âSome of the more subtle signs of labor include looser stool than usual, stomach upset, and abdominal tightening that isnt necessarily painful but increasing in frequency,â says Dr. Conti. In some cases, you might have a sense that something different is going on in your body. âProbable signs that labor is imminent would be losing the mucus plug, bloody show, water breaking or the start of some cramping/back pain,â Hilary Baxendale, Lamaze certified instructor, birth doula, and founder of Westchester Birth and Parenting, tells Romper. âBut many people just feel like something is âoffâ or different, kind of intuitive knowing that something has shifted or is about to happen.â This kind of feeling is difficult to measure, sure, but worth paying attention to in the later days of pregnancy.

So although heartburn is not a definite sign that labor is starting, there are plenty of other ways to tell when your body is revving up for that big event.

What Are Early Signs Of Pregnancy

Your symptoms likely wont begin until your fourth week. This is when you may experience mild blood spotting and cramping and when you can expect to miss your period. But, if you are asking yourself, How do I know if Im pregnant, see if you can relate to any of these early indications:

1. Missed Period

According to an American Pregnancy Association survey, approximately 29 percent of women claimed their first sign of pregnancy was a missed period. Missing your period is a common symptom of pregnancy and it often leads women to do a pregnancy test. You may notice some bleeding even if youre pregnant, but it will usually be lighter and shorter than your normal menstrual period.

2. Urinating Frequently

A couple weeks after you conceive, you may have to urinate more. This is because of your pregnancy hormone hCG. This hormone causes an increase in blood flow to your kidneys, which helps them eliminate waste from your body more efficiently. As your uterus is growing more quickly the pressure on your bladder is greater. The amount of urine storage space you have decreases which causes you to urinate more often.

3. Swollen, Tender Breasts

4. Nausea and Sometimes Vomiting

Nausea was the first pregnancy indication 25 percent of women experienced. Although morning sickness doesnt usually hit women until around a month of becoming pregnant, nausea is often felt earlier. Its thought that your pregnancy hormones are what cause nausea, but it isnt quite clear.

5. Spotting

What Causes Acid Reflux During Pregnancy

Acid reflux occurs when some acid leaks up into the gullet . The lining of the oesophagus can cope with a certain amount of acid. However, if more than the usual amount of acid refluxes, it may cause some inflammation on the lining of the oesophagus, which can cause symptoms.

The sphincter at the bottom of the oesophagus normally prevents acid reflux. It is thought that when you are pregnant:

  • The increased level of certain hormones that occurs has a relaxing effect on the sphincter muscle. That is, the tightness of the sphincter is reduced during pregnancy.
  • The size of the baby in the tummy causes an increased pressure on the stomach.

One or both of the above increase the chance that acid will reflux into the oesophagus. The dyspepsia usually goes away after the birth of your baby when your hormones change back to their non-pregnant state and the baby is no longer causing increased pressure on your stomach.

You are more likely to develop dyspepsia in pregnancy if you have previously had gastro-oesophageal reflux before you were pregnant.

Pregnancy Myth #: Look At The Calendar

Causes and Treatments of Heartburn During Pregnancy

Myth: The Chinese Lunar Calendar can predict a babys gender based on the mothers age when they conceived, and the month of conception.

Reality: The Chinese Lunar Calendar was discovered in a 700-year-old Royal tomb, and many pregnant women whove used it swear by it. Could this ancient artifact have some modern science behind it? Not necessarily. According to the same Canadian researchers who did the Drano test, the Lunar Calendar is no more accurate at predicting a babys gender than a random guess.

Your Feet Are Always Cold

Got cold feet? No, not about being pregnant . If you find that your feet are always cold now that youre pregnant, one old wives tale holds that you might be expecting a boy.

The truth: Temperature changes are most likely due to normal hormonal fluctuations, says Dr. Phillips. Women complain about being both overly hot and cold at any point during the pregnancy, so its not a reliable determination of the babys gender.

Understanding The Oesophagus And Stomach

When we eat, food passes down the gullet into the stomach. Cells in the lining of the stomach make acid and other chemicals which help to digest food.

Stomach cells also make mucus which protects them from damage caused by the acid. The cells lining the oesophagus are different and have little protection from acid.

There is a circular band of muscle at the junction between the oesophagus and stomach. This relaxes to allow food down but normally tightens up and stops food and acid leaking back up into the oesophagus. In effect, the sphincter acts like a valve.

What Is Acid Reflux During Pregnancy

People use the terms heartburn and acid reflux to mean the same thing. But they have different definitions:

  • Acid reflux refers to the LES not tightening as it should. This allows the stomach acid to travel from your stomach up to your esophagus.
  • Heartburn, the feeling of pain or burning in your chest, is a symptom of acid reflux.

Women may have acid reflux during pregnancy and experience heartburn due to changing hormone levels and the baby growing.

There are simple things you can do at home to help decrease nausea and vomiting and prevent from becoming dehydrated.

Nausea And Morning Sickness

Nausea is the feeling of sickness that makes you want to vomit. It is sometimes called feeling queasy in the stomach.

The discomfort occurs in the upper stomach but may not always lead to vomiting. Morning sickness may start to occur as early as the first 3 weeks before a missed period.

  • It can get heightened during implantation.
  • During implantation, the body produces the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin .
  • HCG has been linked with morning sickness and vomiting.

Nausea that is caused by pregnancy can occur any time of the day. It is very common in the morning but it can occur at noon and even in the evenings. Constantly feeling like you want to vomit should start to subside by the second trimester.

What Are Some Unusual Signs Of Early Pregnancy

Some of the symptoms of pregnancy that people are less familiar with are:

  • Heartburn
  • Acid reflux
  • Diarrhea.

Something thats often overlooked, or not well known, is the way pregnancy hormones can play havoc with your digestive system.

The reason for this is the hormone progesterone.

Progesterone starts to rise after a woman ovulates.

If she doesnt get pregnant, it drops rapidly around 10 days after ovulation.

If she does get pregnant, it continues to rise.

This is because progesterones job is to support a pregnancy.

Progesterone is responsible for many of the symptoms of pre-menstrual syndrome a woman experiences.

Its also responsible for many pregnancy symptoms.

Thats why it can be difficult to figure out whether youre pregnant or about to start your period.

Spotting Or Light Bleeding

Is spotting a sign of fertilization and impantation? Why am I having light bleeding before my period? It could mean that you are expecting. Spotting or implantation bleeding may occur even before a missed period.

  • Spotting occurs when the embryo implants or burrows itself on the blood-rich uterine wall.
  • A brownish or pinkish bloody discharge usually occurs several days before the regular period.
  • The bleeding is lighter than your normal period, and will last about 2 days.
  • The process happens between 6 and 12 days after conception.

Some women can experience spotting that is accompanied by symptoms such as cramping. Abdominal pains and light bleeding a couple of days after conception can indicate you are pregnant. However, a positive pregnancy test is the best way to know you are pregnant.

Nausea & Vomiting

Most pregnant women have some degree of nausea and vomiting between 5 and 18 weeks of pregnancy. This is often worst around 9 weeks. Symptoms can occur until delivery in a small number of women. Interestingly, women with nausea and vomiting during pregnancy experience fewer miscarriages and stillbirths than women without these symptoms. Although the cause of nausea is not clear, hormone levels and slowed emptying of the stomach can contribute.

The following suggestions may help reduce symptoms and reduce dehydration:

  • Avoid an empty stomach have a packet of dry biscuits by the bed to eat before you get up.
  • Eat small snacks frequently and have small meals that are high in protein or carbohydrates and low in fat.
  • Avoid large meals.
  • Sip cold, clear fluids such as water, mineral water, lemonade or ginger ale
  • Avoid triggers such as greasy, spicy or fatty foods, stuffy rooms or odours , noise and visual or physical motion .
  • Get plenty of rest.
  • If pregnancy multivitamins or iron make symptoms worse, try taking them at night or stop taking them temporarily.
  • Drink ginger ale or sliced ginger in warm water, or try ginger capsules.
  • Peppermint tea may be helpful, or lemon slices in hot or cold water.
  • Vitamin B6 supplements are proven to be helpful for nausea. We recommend taking 25mg three times a day. Green leafy vegetables, bananas, tuna and chicken are natural food sources of Vitamin B6.

Darkened Areolas Of Nipples

Changes around your breasts are some of the first and very early signs of pregnancy. Other than the nipples swelling, you might observe a change in the color of your areola . You may notice the following.

  • Darkening of the areolas.
  • The bumps around nipples may become more prominent due to dilation.
  • The change in color is likely to be caused by the increased progesterone hormone.

According to Dr. Jill Hichtman, the color change and the prominent bumps are nothing to be concerned about. They are caused by the swelling of oil glands called the glands of Montgomery. These glands secrete an oil that lubricates and protects the skin around the areolas.

First Trimester Changes In Your Body

Pregnancy is different for every woman. Some women glow with good health during those first 3 months others feel absolutely miserable. Here are some of the changes you might notice, what they mean, and which signs warrant a call to your doctor.

Bleeding. About 25% of pregnant women have slight bleeding during their first trimester. Early in the pregnancy, light spotting may be a sign that the fertilized embryo has implanted in your uterus. But if you have severe bleeding, cramping, or sharp pain in your belly, call the doctor. These could be signs of a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy .

Breast tenderness.Sore breasts are one of the earliest signs of pregnancy. They’re triggered by hormonal changes, which are getting your milk ducts ready to feed your baby. Your breasts will probably be sore throughout the first trimester. Going up a bra size and wearing a support bra can make you feel more comfortable. You probably wont go back to your regular bra size until after your baby is finished nursing.

Constipation. During pregnancy, high levels of the hormone progesterone slow down the muscle contractions that normally move food through your system. Add to that the extra iron you’re getting from your prenatal vitamin, and the result is uncomfortable constipation and gas that can keep you feeling bloated throughout your pregnancy. Eat more fiber and drink extra fluids to keep things moving more smoothly. Physical activity can also help.

Does Heartburn In Pregnancy Mean Baby Has Hair

MYTH OR TRUTH: Heartburn means a hairy baby. Answer: TRUTH! Are Heartburn And Hiccups A Sign Of Pregnancy

Heartburn can be problematic during pregnancy.

It can be painful whenever its experienced, but it can be more difficult to treat during pregnancy.

This is because the progesterone that works to support the pregnancy is one of the main causes.

The progesterone cant be reduced, so the pregnant woman must find another way to reduce her heartburn.

Hiccups can be another symptom of a slower digestive system.

It increases the problem of heartburn because the hiccups can push stomach acid up the esophagus and into the mouth.

This isnt necessarily dangerous, but it can be very unpleasant.

What Is The First Trimester Of Pregnancy

The first trimester is the earliest phase of pregnancy. It starts on the first day of your last period — before youre even actually pregnant — and lasts until the end of the 13th week. Its a time of great anticipation and of rapid changes for both you and your baby. Knowing what to expect will help you get ready for the months ahead.

Heightened Sense Of Smell

Do you have an increased sense of smell? Believe it or not, it could be an indication that you are with child. The reason for this is not known scientifically. However, high sensitivity to odors starting in the first days of of your term may be related to the increased estrogen in the body.

  • Your nose will be more sensitive to smells of perfume, colognes, foods etc.
  • You may start complaining of nausea as early as just a few weeks after conception due to this.
  • Like many other initial symptoms the superhuman sense of smell is likely to go away sometime in the second trimester.

Hormones that are strongly linked to be the causes of morning sickness are said to cause increased power of smell as soon as a woman gets pregnant. As we shall see below, nausea is also said to be one of the things you will note.

Rising levels of estrogen and human chorionic gonadotropin in the first trimester trigger nausea, vomiting, and morning sickness. The author of The Mommy Docs Ultimate Guide to Pregnancy and Birth, Yvonne Bohn, MD.
