Can Use Apple Cider Vinegar For Heartburn

Heartburn/Acid reflux. Apple cider Vinegar as home remedy, side effects must know!

Apple cider vinegar is right up there with aloe vera, high on the list of the most versatile and effective ingredients for home remedies. For heartburn sufferers, apple cider vinegar can be very beneficial.

Almost everyone will experience heartburn at some point in their lives. Heartburn feels like a burning sensation in the chest and is often accompanied by a bitter taste in the throat or mouth. It is often a symptom of acid reflux.

The burning sensation is caused by acidic stomach juices rising into the esophagus when the valve between the esophagus and stomach does not close properly.

Under normal circumstances, when you swallow, this valve relaxes, allowing food and liquid to flow down into your stomach. Then the muscle tightens again, thus preventing stomach acid from flowing back up into your esophagus.

Apart from the burning sensation in the chest, other related symptoms may include gas, nausea, bloating and difficulty breathing. The symptoms usually get worse after eating a large meal or while lying down.

There are certain foods and drinks that can trigger heartburn in some people. Common triggers include spicy foods, onions, citrus products, tomato products, fatty or fried foods, peppermint, chocolate, alcohol, carbonated beverages and caffeinated beverages.

Also, being overweight or pregnant can increase your risk of experiencing heartburn.

But instead of over-the-counter medications, you can use apple cider vinegar to get quick relief from heartburn.

Apple Cider Vinegar For Silent Reflux

There is no difference when it comes to relieving silent reflux.

In other words, what you found for acid reflux applies to silent reflux.

If you decide to learn more about the resource on vinegar we suggested before, youll also find that it can be effectively used for the respiratory system.

In particular, it may help to clear sinuses and make your respiratory system healthier, and more protected from infections.

This is important also in the case of acid reflux because the inflammation that refluxate can cause to the larynx will benefit from that.

What Lifestyle Changes Help Heartburn

The best way to avoid heartburn discomfort is to prevent it. These lifestyle changes can make a big difference:

  • Avoid trigger foods: Foods that promote heartburn include fried and fatty foods, caffeine, chocolate, spicy foods and carbonated beverages.
  • Lose weight: Being overweight increases the likelihood that you’ll experience heartburn.
  • Avoid eating late at night: Try to eat three hours before going to bed. At a minimum, you should wait at least one hour after eating.
  • Elevate the bed: Physically lift the head of your bed about six to eight inches so you’re sleeping on an incline. If that’s not possible, use a wedge pillow for lift.
  • Avoid alcohol and tobacco: These substances increase the chances of heartburn attacks.
  • Wear looser clothing: Tight clothing can put pressure on your digestive system.

Reduces Bacteria On Food

If you’re concerned about bacteria on your food, rinsing it with a vinegar-and-water solution can be helpful.

Vinegar contains acetic acid, which has both antifungal and antibacterial properties, per the National Center for Biotechnology Information.

In one lab experiment, researchers rinsed arugula and scallions with vinegar and found that it reduced the presence of Salmonella cells, which had been placed on the veggies. The most effective way to remove the Salmonella was to use a one-to-one mixture of lemon and vinegar, according to February 2005 results in the International Journal of Food Microbiology.

However, little research has been done to show vinegar’s effect on bacteria in other arenas, let alone its effect on bacterial infections in the body. Plus, neither vinegar nor lemon is necessarily better than plain old H2O when it comes to cleaning produce, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .

And, despite any antibacterial properties of vinegar, it’s not approved for disinfection purposes in health care situations because it’s only effective against some bacteria, according to the CDC.

5 Best Home Remedies for Acid Reflux

Okay, so “cure” is a strong word. The drinking-ACV-for-heartburn advice come from a few different websites and blogs, but most credit one college thesis paper from Arizona State University .

Still, the paper’s researchera graduate studentconducted a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, cross-over research study that had people either eat a meal with chili , take an antacid after a chili meal, eat chili that had apple cider vinegar added to it, or drink diluted ACV after eating the chili.

Those who had vinegar in any form seemed to do pretty well in the heartburn department but, the researcher said, more research is needed.

Other than that, theres no reputable research on this. Still, this move “works for some individuals with mild heartburn, says Ashkan Farhadi, M.D., a gastroenterologist at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center and director of MemorialCare Medical Groups Digestive Disease Project in Fountain Valley, Calif.

Might Help With Weight Loss

Apple cider vinegar is often considered a weight-loss aid, but there’s limited research around this in humans. A few studies have shown promise, though.

For example, taking 1/2 to 1 ounce of apple vinegar mixed into about 2 cups of water daily helped adults with obesity lose weight over the course of 12 weeks in a randomized, placebo-controlled trial, per August 2009 results in Bioscience, Biotechnology and Biochemistry. They drank half the mixture after breakfast and the other half after dinner. The participants were separated into three groups: one that got a lower dose of ACV , one that got a higher dose and one that didn’t get any ACV at all. Body weight, BMI and body fat ratios were significantly lower in the ACV groups at the end of the trial.

In another small randomized clinical trial, people with overweight or obesity who followed a restricted-calorie diet and took about 1 1/2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar daily for 12 weeks lost more weight than those who only followed the restricted-calorie diet and didn’t drink ACV. The vinegar group also lost more visceral fat, lowered their BMI and hip circumference and reduced their appetite, according to findings in the April 2018 Journal of Functional Foods.

It’s important to note that both the Cleveland Clinic and Mayo Clinic deem ACV unlikely to be a successful method for weight loss on its own.

Why Should You Use Apple Cider Vinegar For Acid Reflux

It is of utmost importance to make use of raw, unpasteurized, and unfiltered apple cider vinegar for the preparation of home remedies for acid reflux. This is because raw and pure apple cider vinegar is rich in proteins, pectin, and a host of essential enzymes and vitamins.

Acid reflux is caused due to the inadequacy of digestive juices and acid in the stomach which prevents proper digestion of food. The consumption of ACV increases the level of acidic content and thereby helps with healthy digestion. The health benefits of apple cider vinegar for acid reflux are as follows:

One small study conducted at Arizona State University in 2016 suggests that organic apple cider vinegar appeared to alleviate heartburn symptoms for some study participants, but those symptoms were only alleviated for the first 60 to 75 minutes, and researchers concluded that the improvements were not statistically significant.

Is Raw Apple Cider Vinegar Better Than Regular Vinegar

Two decades ago, raw and organic apple cider vinegar was typically only found in health food stores. Now it is easy to find raw and organic apple cider vinegar at stores and markets everywhere, and as much health as is packed into that bottle, it is generally worth the extra expense for this product.

Pectin in raw acv is a prebiotic and helps with digestion. Nutrients and enzymes are in raw apple cider vinegar, whereas they have largely been filtered out and possibly destroyed by heat in the processing of regular vinegar.

All vinegars contain acetic acid. Acetic acid is a weak electrolyte.

In the end, raw and processed apple cider vinegars both have health benefits and uses. But because of the additional benefits of raw apple cider vinegar, it is ideal for regular use. Typically, in a pinch, the regular vinegar works for many health problems quite nicely, fortunately. In an emergency, even white distilled vinegar works in some cases.

May Help Regulate Blood Sugar

Among vinegar’s health claims, its effect on diabetes and blood sugar control is one of the most studied.

Blood sugar is a source of energy for your body, according to the U.S. Library of Medicine. Diabetes occurs when blood sugar levels are too high.

There’s some evidence that links apple cider vinegar and fewer blood sugar spikes, but research has not found a proven cause-and-effect relationship. Having ACV at mealtime may help improve insulin sensitivity, according to Northwell Health.

For example, in a 12-week pilot study with 14 participants, adults at risk for type 2 diabetes who drank 750 milligrams of vinegar at mealtime had lower fasting blood sugar levels than those who took a control pill, per October 2013 results in the Journal of Functional Foods. This was a very small study, though, and it looked at the effects of vinegar in general, not specifically apple cider vinegar.

In another small study with 29 people, those who drank a mixture of apple cider vinegar, water and saccharine before a high-carb meal had steadier blood sugar levels after eating than those who had a placebo drink, according to January 2004 findings in Diabetes Care.

Keep in mind these studies are all quite small, involving handfuls not hundreds of participants. As a result, larger studies are needed to determine ACV’s effectiveness before any recommendation can be made for or against it, according to May 2018 research in the Journal of Evidence-Based Integrative Medicine.

Ive always thought it sounded counterintuitive to use an acid to alleviate indigestion, but the number of times Ive heard people treat their symptoms of heartburn with apple cider vinegar is too large to count. So, I decided to look into whether this strategy works, and to do some investigation about the idea behind its use. To my surprise, there is no research published in medical journals that addresses using raw apple cider vinegar to treat heartburn, despite widespread use and recommendations from blogs and websites.

Apple Cider Vinegar Can Be A Good Heartburn Remedy

There is a theory that heartburn can be caused by not having enough acid in your stomach. Some people use apple cider vinegar for heartburn as a means to increase acid to their system. However, those with an already irritated esophagus may not find drinking vinegar to be helpful. There is currently no robust data to support the effectiveness of apple cider vinegar in relieving heartburn.

What Are The Benefits Of Apple Cider Vinegar

The acetic acid found in apple cider vinegar may provide several health benefits.

For some people, acid reflux may be a result of too little stomach acid. Proponents of this remedy claim apple cider vinegar might be beneficial because it introduces more acid into the digestive tract. This acid is also effective against several types of bacteria and acts as an antimicrobial agent.

Apple cider vinegar may also help people with diabetes manage blood sugar. Ingesting vinegar can raise your bodys insulin sensitivity. This allows the insulin to move glucose through your body and decrease your blood sugar levels.

Mix Baking Soda With Water

You might have a heartburn remedy at hand in your kitchen without even knowing it. Baking soda can calm some episodes of heartburn by neutralizing your stomach acid.

To do this, dissolve a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water and drink it slowly. In fact, you should drink everything slowly when you have heartburn.

help relieve nausea, so some believe it may be worth trying for heartburn, too.

Consider adding grated or diced ginger root to your favorite stir-fry recipes, soups, and other foods. To make ginger tea, steep raw ginger root, dried ginger root, or ginger tea bags in boiling water.

Its probably best to avoid ginger ale, though. Carbonated beverages are a common heartburn trigger, and most brands of ginger ale are made with artificial flavoring rather than the real thing.

What Is Gerd What Is Acid Reflux

Lesser Known Yet Effective Home Remedies For Acid Reflux ...

GERD is short for gastroesophageal reflux disease. Researchers estimate that GERD affects about 20 percent of people in the United States.

Gastro deals with your stomach, esophageal deals with your esophagus, the tube that delivers food to the stomach, so gastroesophageal is where the two meet in your digestive tract.

Reflux is backwards flow in this case, stomach contents flowing back up the esophagus. Disease generally indicates a chronic condition, as opposed to occasional acid reflux.

Symptoms of GERD and acid reflux are similar, but acid reflux commonly passes quickly or is only a problem once in a while.

GERD sticks around, and prompts many people to get on prescription acid blockers.

These acid blocking medications may calm symptoms, but they can also cause other problems, which I’ll discuss below. GERD may also cause long term issues such as scar tissue buildup at the base of the esophagus.
