How Low Stomach Acid Leads To Increased Iap And Gerd

HOW I CURED MY ACID REFLUX/GERD | Natural Remedies & Real Tips That WORK!

Stomach acid is part of the bodys innate immune system, the first line of defense against pathogens. Most bacteria cant survive the stomachs highly acidic environment. If you dont have enough stomach acid, many of the pathogens that would normally be destroyed may survive the stomach and make their way into the rest of the GI tract. This can lead to chronic gut infections, impaired digestion, and an increase in IAP and GERD.

Stomach acid also helps your body absorb many macro- and micronutrients. HCl stimulates the release of pancreatic enzymes and bile into the small intestine to help metabolize carbohydrates and fats. Without enough acid, your body cant digest carbohydrates properly. Those undigested carbs are then fermented by bacteria in a process that generates excess hydrogen gas. Again, that excess gas increases IAP and contributes to GERD.

Is It Just Heartburn Or Gerd

Frequent heartburn can be a major issue. If you experience heartburn two or more times a week, you may have gastroesophageal reflux disease .

In this chronic condition, frequent exposure to stomach acid irritates and damages the esophagus. Over time, that can lead to problems such as difficulty swallowing. An estimated 40 percent of Americans report symptoms of GERD but the condition can significantly improve with lifestyle changes.

If you’ve tried home remedies and lifestyle adjustments and still have frequent heartburn, consult with your family doctor or a gastroenterologist. There are multiple treatments that can help, including medications and minimally invasive surgery for acid reflux.

Make Ginger Tea To Relieve Heartburn

If you want to get rid of nausea accompanying your heartburn, just make a cup of fresh ginger root tea that will soothe your stomach and give you the much-wanted comfort. If nausea and heartburn become a regular feature of your life, you may also consider having a cup of fresh ginger tea before your meals. This helps your stomach in settling down as ginger acts as an acid buffer.

Increased Risk Of Infection

As I discussed above, stomach acid serves as a first-line defense against pathogens. The ideal pH for the stomach can approach 1 but should be below 3, where most pathogens cannot survive. When the pH rises above 5, several dangerous bacterial species are able to survive.

Acid-blockers can increase the stomachs pH and worsen the risk of a bacterial infection. In one study, Tagamet and Zantac, two H2 blockers, raised the stomach pH from 12 to 5.5 and 6.5, respectively. PPIs can raise the pH even more. In one study, a 20- or 40-mg dose of Prilosec reduced stomach acid levels to almost zeroand increased the pH to almost 7in 10 healthy men.

Without stomach acid, pathogens can thrive. Oral bacteria such as the genus Rothia are over-represented in the gut microbiota of PPI users, indicating that bacteria entering the through mouth are better able to survive in the stomach.

Compared to people on other medications, PPI users have a greater risk of acquiring infectious bacteria like:

  • Clostridium difficile
  • Dysentery

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, or SIBO, is another possible result of PPI usage. SIBO can inhibit nutrient absorption, damage the bowel lining, and cause diarrhea and other GI symptoms. One research study found that 50 percent of PPI users tested positive for SIBO through the hydrogen breath test, compared to only 6 percent of non-users. Meta-analyses have mostly confirmed this association.

What Do I Do If I Think I Have Gerd

How to relieve heartburn ~ How to

With GERD when reflux and heartburn happen more than once in a while the tissue lining your esophagus is getting battered regularly with stomach acid. Eventually the tissue becomes damaged. If you have this chronic acid reflux and heartburn you can see its affecting your daily eating and sleeping habits.

When GERD makes your daily life uncomfortable in this way, call your healthcare provider. Although GERD isnt life-threatening in itself, its chronic inflammation of the esophagus can lead to something more serious. You may need stronger prescription medications or even surgery to ease your symptoms.

Disclaimer: I am not a medical doctor, and this information is not intended to diagnose, treat or cure any health condition. Rather its a reflection of what I have learned on my journey to heal my body. Never stop taking medication without consulting your doctor, as there can be negative side effects to doing so. If you have concerns about a particular health concern, including gastroesophageal reflux disease , I highly recommend seeing a health care provider who understands that there are and is open to trying alternative approaches to treating reflux. Ive shared my full list of links and recommended providers here but have also embedded links below:

    1) Chew Your Food & SLOW Down

This might seem simple, but most of us dont do it! Enzymes in our mouth help us start the digestive process. If we inhale our food, we bypass that step, which makes our stomach work harder to break down our food.

    2) Drink Water BEFORE Not During Meals

When we drink liquid during a meal, we can dilute our stomach acid and fill up our stomachs too much, which can put pressure on the LES . The LES is the muscle that prevents food from going back up our esophagus. Drinking room temperature water 10-15 minutes before a meal and only sipping water or warm tea as needed during a meal has helped me. When we chew our food thoroughly, we dont need as much liquid to wash it down.

    3) Eliminate Trigger Foods.

Melon has a pH of 6.1 and therefore it can be counted as one of the good foods for heartburn. Some people, however, may not respond well to melon and need to avoid it. So you can have some melon pieces every day or make a smoothie with melon and other ingredients that are also good to cure heartburn. Here is one recipe for a melon smoothie that also uses almond milk, cantaloupe, watermelon, ginger and banana. Almonds are also said to be a great remedy for heartburn as they neutralize stomach acid. While you can always snack on almonds, adding a few of them in this smoothie will not only make it tasty but will increase its efficacy in combating heartburn.

    Heartburn And Acid Reflux

Acid reflux occurs when acid escapes out of the stomach. This can be due to a weak valve that is supposed to hold in the acid. This valve is a muscle that is responsible for keeping food in the stomach. When it doesnt close completely, the stomach acid can make its way up the esophagus, which causes the sensation of burning.

Reflux can also occur when food doesnt digest properly. The contents of your stomach get getting backed up and you end up with stomach acid in your esophagus.

As you may have heard, acid reflux is often NOT caused by too much acid. Instead, it can actually result from too little acid in your stomach. If theres not enough acid in your stomach, food wont digest quickly enough. Your body responds to this by pumping in more stomach juices, and this can cause an overproduction of these fluids.

This overflow can lead to reflux. Acid reflux is also highly related to the presence of Helicobacter pylori , though just because you have H. pylori doesnt mean you have acid reflux.

The goal in addressing acid reflux is to get your gastric balance back to normal. A very good first step is to eliminate known trigger foods , and see what other hidden triggers might exist. Personally, I know that alcohol and coffee are virtually guaranteed to lead to heartburn for me.

When To Seek Care For Heartburn

Dont ignore heartburn. Stomach acid can damage your esophagus and increase your risk of cancer. Sometimes natural remedies and over-the-counter medications are not enough to reduce your symptoms of heartburn, and prescription medications may be necessary.

    • An Everyday Online visit is a convenient option for diagnosis and treatment of heartburn, as well as to help determine if your heartburn symptoms point to acid reflux or GERD .
    • Schedule a virtual visit with a general practice doctor if lifestyle changes and medicines are not helping, if you have heartburn three to four times per week, or if you have other symptoms such as food getting stuck in your throat, vomiting or unintentional weight loss.

If you have more severe symptoms, such as chest pain, dark-colored vomit, black stools, persistent vomiting, or feel like you are choking, seek care in the Emergency Room right away.

Microbial Imbalance In The Digestive Tract

Have you ever had a feeling of butterflies in your stomach when you were doing something new, risky, or scary? That is because the gut and brain communicate with each other and are intricately connected. In fact, over the last twenty years a whole new field of medical science has emerged around this topic, called the gut-brain axis. Astonishingly, the gut which is often referred to as the second brain, has more than 500 million neurons. As you may know, the neuron is the fundamental unit of the brain and is responsible for interpreting sensory input and sending motor commands to the body.

What we have since learned is a third and equally important component of this connection called the microbiome. Your microbiome is the 5 pounds of microorganisms and genes that live in your body and are essential to your survival. In fact, this expanded field of study which is now referred to the gut-brain-microbiome axis reveals that the number of cells in your microbiome outnumber the human cells in your body by a factor of 10-1. In fact, there are more than 100 trillion microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa in a healthy human body.

The main symptoms are persistent heartburn and acid regurgitation. Some people have GERD without heartburn. Instead, they experience pain in the chest, hoarseness in the morning or trouble swallowing. You may feel like you have food stuck in your throat, or like you are choking or your throat is tight. GERD can also cause a dry cough and bad breath.

    Does Gerd Ever Go Away

GERD can be a serious condition that will not resolve on its own. Untreated GERD could cause esophageal swelling and stomach acid can potentially damage the lining. This could lead to esophageal carcinoma, which can prove fatal. Many people try to treat their GERD first with over-the-counter antacids.

    Can Gerd Cause Asthma

We dont know the exact relationship between GERD and asthma. More than 75% of people with asthma have GERD. They are twice as likely to have GERD as people without asthma. GERD may make asthma symptoms worse, and asthma drugs may make GERD worse. But treating GERD often helps to relieve asthma symptoms.

The symptoms of GERD can injure the lining of the throat, airways and lungs, making breathing difficult and causing a persistent cough, which may suggest a link. Doctors mostly look at GERD as a cause of asthma if:

    • Asthma begins in adulthood.
    • Asthma symptoms get worse after a meal, exercise, at night and after lying down.
    • Asthma doesnt get better with standard asthma treatments.

If you have asthma and GERD, your healthcare provider can help you find the best ways to handles both conditions the right medications and treatments that wont aggravate symptoms of either disease.

Try Slippery Elm To Get Rid Of Heartburn

Slippery elm has been traditionally used by Native Americans for treating various conditions including wounds, boils, ulcers, burns, skin inflammation as well as coughs, sore throats, diarrhea, and stomach problems. The herb has mucilage, a component that converts into a slick gel when it is mixed with water. It gives slippery elm its demulcent property due to which it coats and soothes the area where it is directed. In case of heartburn, it coats the layer of mucous that lines your stomach and thus creates a barrier against acid that could not find its way up to your esophagus.

    Get this:

    • Add the slippery elm powder to water or milk whatever you are comfortable with.
    • Stir it well to mix the powder completely into the water.
    • You may have it 1-3 times a day depending upon the severity of your heartburn.
    • Have this herbal drink after your meals and at bedtime.

New Research Hints At A Novel Possible Link Between These Two Common Conditions

HOW I CURED MY CHRONIC ACID REFLUX (FOR REAL)

Does chronic constipation make people more prone to heart problems? Some studies suggest the answer is yes, but the evidence is far from clear. As is true for all observational study findings, a correlation between two conditions doesnt mean that one causes the other.

“Another problem is that constipation can be defined in many ways, so results from different researchers vary,” says Dr. Kyle Staller, a gastroenterologist with Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Nearly everyone gets “backed up” once in a while, but chronic constipation is different . In fact, other studies, including one Dr. Staller coauthored, found no association between constipation and heart-related conditions.

Check out these simple steps you can take to ease your heartburn symptoms.

    1. Rethink Your Drink

Unfortunately for coffee lovers, that morning cup of joe could be the culprit behind your heartburn.

Too much caffeine can cause your lower esophageal sphincter to relax, which creates the perfect window of opportunity for stomach acid to splash back up into the esophagus and cause those negative heartburn symptoms.

Although I dont recommend caffeine intake in general, if you need to get your coffee fix, its best to opt for a darker roast or a brew thats lower in acidity. is also a good alternative because the amount of acid is reduced during processing.

Or, try mixing up your morning by trading your cup of coffee for some herbal tea. Free of caffeine, tea generally has a calming effect on the stomach and is much less irritating than coffee.

If tea doesnt strike your fancy, why not wake up with a refreshing green smoothie like this one, or one of these smoothie bowls? Green smoothies can give your fiber intake a big bump, which will help keep your digestive system moving and prevent the recurrence of acid reflux and heartburn.

Green smoothies also help alkalize your blood, helping your red blood cells to easily transport oxygen throughout the body and allowing your cells to produce more energy. This means you wont even need to get your caffeine fix to feel energized.

    2. Switch Your Sleep Routine

    3. Help Your Body Digest
