How To Get Rid Of Heartburn Fast | 5 Quick Ways

What you eat matters with acid reflux, but not necessarily in the way you may think.

Its difficult to make sweeping recommendations about diet that will apply to everyone, Dr. Natarajan says. There is a lot of variation with the types of foods that may affect you. One person may find that spicy foods make their heartburn much worse, while someone else might not be bothered.

Still, if there are foods you know trigger your heartburn, its best to avoid them.

Even more important, look at the bigger picture of your diet, she says. For instance, consider the makeup of your foods: A meal high in fat can make reflux worse.

The nerves that line the GI tract sense fats, protein, and carbs differently, Dr. Levinthal explains. Fats are well known to slow down the rate by which the stomach empties. So if you eat a fatty meal, there is more food in your stomach for longer, and therefore a bigger chance to reflux.

Fatty meals also tend to be higher in calories, which can contribute to obesity. Thats a big problem with acid reflux too. In fact, getting to a healthy weight can help reduce symptoms: Even losing 10 percent of your weight can yield noticeable results, Dr. Levinthal says.

The Best Drinks For Heartburn

Chronic acid reflux is likely to inspire any number of lifestyle changes, and choice of beverages may be one of them. Many go-to drinks like coffee and sodas are likely to aggravate heartburn and other symptoms of acid reflux, which in its chronic form is known as gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD. If youre used to reaching for soft drinks, caffeinated beverages or certain fruit juices when youre thirsty, consider switching to alternatives that may actually relieve symptoms rather than trigger them.

  • 1Heartburn happens when stomach acid backs up into your esophagus. When you eat or drink something, the small band of muscle at the bottom of your esophagus, known as your esophageal sphincter, relaxes and allows the food or drink to pass through into your stomach. Then, it tightens back up to keep everything contained. If your esophageal sphincter relaxes when it shouldnt then stomach acid can flow back up into your esophagus, which causes the classic burning sensation in your chest known as heartburn.XTrustworthy SourceMayo ClinicEducational website from one of the worlds leading hospitalsGo to source
  • 2Certain foods are more likely to trigger your heartburn. Foods that are high in fat, salt, or are spicy and acidic are much more likely to cause heartburn. That includes fried food, fast food, pizza, processed snacks, as well as fatty meats like bacon and sausage and spicy peppers like chili powder, cayenne, and black pepper. for me and my baby shortly after she was born. It helped her a lot. I sprinkled some on my nipple just before nursing her, but Im sure mixing a small amount in with some breastmilk would be fine too. Just a tiny bit made a big difference. Be sure to take it yourself, because your baby will get it from you too. Good luck!
