Heartburn can happen to any person at any time. When it persists for more than two weeks, it leads to GERD . This disease can lead to severe health issues if not treated in time.

How Long Does Irritable Bowel Syndrome Symptoms Last

Irritable bowel syndrome which is commonly known IBS is a disorder that causes stomach discomfort, abdominal pain, gas or farting, diarrhea, and constipation. Irritable bowel syndrome is more common in women, with women having a higher percentage of being affected by this syndrome than men. This syndrome though, not life threatening, can alter the lifestyle of the person when affected totally. It has been known to make people miss work, school for a long period of absence because of its recurrent nature. Though the cause of irritable bowel syndrome cannot be exactly defined, it is believed that it may be due to some conditions in the large intestine . These conditions may include:

  • Hypersensitivity of the colon, and leads to over reaction to the mildest change or stimulation in the colon.
  • It is also believed that irritable bowel syndrome may occur when muscles in your bowel become loose and lack strength to squeeze the stool properly.
  • It is also believed to be due to the presence of serotonin and gastrin in the body.

Is My Heartburn A Disease

Heartburn can be experienced by virtually anyone. It could occur due to foods you eat or be a consequence of obesity. The duration at which you experience these symptoms pushes the diagnosis of acid reflux into disease territory. Occasional acid reflux symptoms are easily remedied with lifestyle changes. However, more serious cases of acid reflux that occur over long periods of time arent as easy to take care of.

When acid reflux goes beyond a general feeling of discomfort and is present after nearly every meal, more drastic measures need to be taken. This often means the use of over-the-counter or prescribed medication to decrease the production of stomach acid.

What Are The Chronic Symptoms And Effects Of Covid

A from the World Health Organization states that recovering from a mild case of COVID-19 takes about two weeks, while severe or critical forms of the disease my take up to six weeks.

But thats not always the case. Some patients are ending up in a bit of limbo, saddled with symptoms that last for months, even as their initial illness fades away. One woman who spoke with Prevention.com has been dealing with symptoms and side effects for more than 120 days.

Even after the acute infection resolves, these patients experience shortness of breath, sometimes cough, and profound fatigue, usually for several months after they recover from the pneumonia, Dr. Kotloff says. This is not the kind of thing thats like a routine bacterial infection, where after a week or two they might be feeling better.

According to a new survey conducted by Survivor Corps, a Facebook support group for COVID-19 survivors, and Natalie Lambert, Ph.D., of Indiana Universitys School of Medicine, the most common effects reported by COVID-19 long haulers, include:

On top of that, patients are also likely to experience psychological symptoms like depression, anxiety, and PTSD, which often occur in people who have spent time in the ICU, have been intubated, or spend months trying to recover, Dr. Kotloff says.

What Are Proton Pump Inhibitors

Proton pump inhibitors are medications that decrease the amount of stomach acid that the stomach produces. They are more effective for providing heartburn relief than H2 blockers. They also work better to help heal the esophagus. Both over-the-counter and prescription versions of these medications are available. They need to be taken on an empty stomach. Examples of PPIs include lansoprazole , pantoprazole , esomeprazole , omeprazole , and Rabeprazole . PPIs should not be taken long-term nor in high doses because this is associated with an increased risk of fractures of the wrists, spine, and hips.

When To See Your Doctor

The suggestions set out above are just some of the changes you could make to reduce the symptoms of heartburn, and the list is not exhaustive. If you still feel no relief after following them, you should definitely consult your doctor.

The following situations should encourage you to make a doctors appointment as soon as possible:

  • severe signs: if youre experiencing severe signs of heartburn , seek medical help to make sure the exposure to stomach acid doesnt cause irreparable harm to your body
  • uncertainty: talk to a professional if youre not sure whether youre actually experiencing heartburn, as there are some other conditions with overlapping symptoms that point to serious complications
  • frequent GERD: if you experience the symptoms of GERD several times a week then see your doctor immediately, even if the symptoms are mild
  • regular use of over-the-counter medications: being a regular user of over-the-counter antacids or other medications can be dangerous, as they will only neutralise your symptoms but cannot heal the actual inflammation that causes them
  • no relief after medication: if you still have heartburn symptoms even after taking prescription or over-the-counter medications, discuss the matter with your doctor to see where the problem is
  • problems engaging in your daily activities: if frequent or chronic heartburn symptoms are interfering with your daily activities, seek professional help to get your life back on track.

What Treatments Relieve And Cure Indigestion

If you are considering surgery, specifically for GERD cases, please watch this video!!!

The treatment of indigestion is a difficult and unsatisfying topic because so few drugs have been studied and have been shown to be effective. Moreover, the drugs that have been shown to be effective have not been shown to be very effective. This difficult situation exists for many reasons including:

The lack of understanding of the physiologic processes that cause indigestion has meant that treatment usually cannot be directed at the mechanisms. Instead, treatment usually is directed at the symptoms. For example, nausea is treated with medications that suppress nausea but do not affect the cause of the nausea. On the other hand, the psychotropic drugs and psychological treatments treat hypothetical causes of indigestion rather than causes or even the symptoms. Treatment for indigestion often is similar to that for irritable bowel syndrome even though the causes of IBS and indigestion are likely to be different.

Medicines That Can Help

We’ve come a long way in the treatment of indigestion, heartburn and peptic ulcers, and it’s all down to advances in medicines.

When I was a medical student, it was fairly common for people to need surgery to control their symptoms – these days tablets like PPIs keep acid under control much better.

Sometimes a germ calledHelicobacter pylori can make indigestion worse. Your doctor may perform a breath, stool or blood test for this and if necessary, give you a one-week course of treatment with three different tablets to get rid of it. This doesn’t always work and it involves taking several tablets a day and often having to avoid even a sip of alcohol for a week, but it can greatly reduce the chance of symptoms returning.

Some Days Feel Like I Dont Have One Ounce Of Energy Left In My Body

Firefighter Kimberly Talmadge, 53, of Hamden, Connecticut, has been sick with symptoms since April 3, reporting exhaustion, shortness of breath and sleep apnea. She and her husband were exposed working at the fire department.

“We were both sick within a week of exposure,” Talmadge said.

The couple reported most of the usual symptoms including fever, cough, dehydration, sore throat, shortness of breath, fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite and a lost sense of smell and taste. Talmadge lost 15 pounds and is still losing her hair at “an alarming rate.”

After a few weeks, the couple started feeling better. Talmadge’s husband tested positive although he felt well enough to return to work, and the following weekend Talmadge was sick again. They thought living together might be keeping them sick, so she moved to college housing the fire department arranged. Two weeks later her husband got a negative result but it was another month before she did.

She continues to have shortness of breath and intense fatigue.

“Some days feel like I dont have one ounce of energy left in my body,” Talmage said. “This is my 20th year on the job and Im not sure if Im going to make it back.”

Can Swallowing Gum Cause Constipation

If you swallow gum, its true that your body cant digest it. But the gum doesnt stay in your stomach. It moves relatively intact through your digestive system and is excreted in your stool. On very rare occasions, large amounts of swallowed gum combined with constipation have blocked intestines in children.

Get A Good Nights Sleep

Exercise also helps you sleep better, and sleep plays a huge in gut behavior and digestive functioning, Lacy adds.

Sleep and IBS are intertwined. A study published in January 2021 in PLoS One found that people with IBS were 2 to 4 times more likely than people without IBS to suffer from insomnia or excessive tiredness. While an older study noted that IBS patients were more likely to suffer disturbed sleep, which leads to worse mood and more pain.

Taking measures to improve sleep can have a profound impact on feeling happier and improving digestion, says Lacy.

Which Specialties Of Doctors Treat Indigestion

Since indigestion is very common, almost all doctors see and treat patients with indigestion, especially family practitioners, internists and even pediatricians. If these generalists are unable to provide adequate treatment, the patient usually is referred to a gastroenterologist, an internist or pediatrician with specialty training in gastrointestinal diseases.

Abdominal Discomfort And Excessive Air In The Stomach

Everyone knows that when they have mild abdominal discomfort, belching often relieves the problem. This is because excessive air in the stomach often is the cause of mild abdominal discomfort as a result, people force belches whenever mild abdominal discomfort is felt, whatever the cause. Unfortunately, if there is no excessive gas to be expelled, forced belches do nothing more than draw air into the esophagus. Usually this air is expelled during the same belch , but the air also may enter the stomach, and itself result in excess gas that must be expelled with additional belching.

If the problem causing the discomfort is not excessive air in the stomach, then belching does not provide relief. As mentioned previously, it even may make the situation worse by increasing air in the stomach. When belching does not ease the discomfort, the belching should be taken as a sign that something may be wrong within the abdomen, and the cause of the discomfort should be sought. Belching by itself, however, does not help the physician determine what may be wrong because belching can occur in virtually any abdominal disease or condition that causes discomfort.

  • People often are unaware that they are swallowing air.
  • “Burping” infants during bottle or breastfeeding is important in order to expel air in the stomach that has been swallowed with the formula or milk.
  • Excessive air in the stomach is not the only cause of belching.

What Are The Causes Of Heartburn

The problem of heartburn is too common all around the world. According to a recent data, more than 15 million people in the USA are affected by heartburn daily. The basic cause of heartburn is any kind of malfunctioning of lower esophageal sphincter, or LES. It is a bundle of muscles at the lower end of esophagus, where it meets with the stomach. The lower esophageal sphincter controls the movement of foods from the esophagus to the stomach debarring the food materials from getting back to esophagus. When this sphincter doesnt tighten properly, semi-digested food materials, and acids that form in the stomach may enter into the esophageal region, which is known as acid reflux. Acid in the stomach can cause such problem if it is overproduced than required.

So, the two obvious causes of acid reflux leading to heartburn are malfunctioning of the lower esophageal sphincter, and overproduction of acid in the stomach.

Malfunctioning of LES may be due to the following reasons:

    • Overeating that causes too much pressure on the upper part of the stomach.
    • Pressure on the stomach due to constipation, obesity, and pregnancy.
    • Again, there are certain food materials that sometimes relax the concerned muscles. Excess of such foodstuffs like onion, garlic, chocolate, caffeine, etc. have the capability to relax the muscles and allow acid reflux.
    • Unhealthy lifestyle, alcoholism, smoking, overindulgence in fast foods, etc. can also weaken the concerned bundle of muscles.

Tips To Keep Heartburn On The Backburner

To prevent occasional bouts of heartburn, try taking the following five steps:

    1. Avoid eating within three hours of the time you go to bed.

    2. Take any acid suppressant medication, such as a proton pump inhibitor, first thing in the morning. “Because of the way proton pump inhibitor-type medications activate, it’s not helpful to take these medications at night on an empty stomach,” says Brown.

    3. Sleep on a slight incline, with your head elevated, and/or sleep on your left side. If you have chronic heartburn, falling asleep in the wrong position enables acid to sneak into the esophagus. Keeping your head raised slightly keeps that from happening. Studies have also found that while sleeping on the right side actually aggravates heartburn, flipping over to your left side is likely to calm it, although the reason why is unknown.

    4. Avoid foods that may cause acid reflux, such as peppermint, coffee and chocolate. “Interestingly, spicy foods haven’t been shown to cause heartburn,” says Brown. “And there’s some evidence that spicy foods may actually protect the body from ulcers.”

    5. If you smoke or use other tobacco products, quit. Not only does smoking relax the lower esophageal sphincter, allowing stomach acid to move up into the esophagus where it doesn’t belong, but it also can slow the production of saliva, which protects against acid in the esophagus.

Do Heart Attacks And Heartburn Feel Similar

Although heartburn and heart attacks have different causes, they can feel similar. Both can cause chest pain and discomfort in the center of the chest, so it can be hard to distinguish between the two.

If you have a burning pain behind your breastbone that started after a spicy meal and otherwise you feel well, it is likely you have heartburn. Often, heartburn can be easily treated with over-the-counter antacids. If you try this and your symptoms go away, that is a good indicator they were caused by heartburn.

Many people also get heartburn more than once. So if you had heartburn in the past and experience the same symptoms again, it is likely another case of heartburn.

Angina and heart attacks can also cause a burning pain or discomfort in the chest, so it is important to notice other symptoms. For example, if you also feel short of breath or light-headed, it might be something more serious . If you are unsure about your symptoms, or if you have chest pain that feels different from what you had in the past, be sure to talk to your healthcare provider. They can help you determine if your symptoms are from heartburn or a more serious cause.

It is important to know that heart attacks in women can have different symptoms. Women can have chest pressure and heaviness. But they may also have no chest pain at all. Instead, women may have nausea, fatigue, or lightheadedness that could be mistaken for another illness.
