Try Baking Soda And Lemon Water

Heartburn (GERD): Why You Should Get Treated

Another natural way to cure heartburn quickly is to make a mixture of baking soda and lemon with water.

  • Mix half a teaspoon of baking soda and a few drops of lemon juice in a warm cup of water
  • Drink it
  • Lemons contain limonene which dilutes the acid in your stomach. The bicarbonates in baking soda will also reduce the action of acid. Alternatively you can skip the baking soda and just squeeze lemon juice into a warm water and drink. The baking soda just gives it some extra punch.

If you are consistently getting Heartburn, you should see a doctor at once. If all these tips on getting rid of heartburn fail, a more aggressive treatment may be needed.

What Is The Difference Between Regular Heartburn And Gerd

Everyone has heartburn from time to time. Theres nothing unusual about that. Generally, taking an antacid helps. However, if youre popping Tums more than three times a week, its time to speak to your doctor.

The technical definition of GERD is mild acid reflux that occurs twice a week or moderate to severe acid reflux that occurs once a week. When over-the-counter medicines dont make a dent in the horrible heartburn, you likely have GERD.

Acid Reflux Sore Throat Healing Time

Acid Reflux Taking Your Breath Away

I am often asked how long does LPR take to heal or what is the LPR recovery time? Well, if you are someone who hasnt been following my treatment advise and you have this nagging sore throat this could be in fact hindering you from healing and for a lot of people that would be true.

With that being said healing time will depend a lot of a host of factors. Lets assume you have silent reflux and are eating a diet that will only prevent it from healing then in that case it may be very difficult for you to heal because you are constantly eating/drinking things that will flare/irritate it further which is how I cured my silent reflux.

On a final note if you arent sure if the root cause of your sore throat is because of acid I would suggest taking my RSI quiz here called the Reflux Symptom Index Test. The purpose of this quiz is to show you that if you score over a certain amount there is a high probably that your root cause is related to acid reflux.

Find Out The Differences Between The Two

Acid Reflux and GERD are tied closely togetherbut most people arent aware of what differentiates them. Heres an easy way to know the difference: Acid Reflux occurs when the acid in your stomach backs up, or refluxes, into your esophagus, causing heartburn. And Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease is chronic or recurring acid reflux.1

Many things can cause acid reflux, including foods like coffee and chocolate, being overweight or pregnant, or eating too much or too quickly.

But whats actually happening inside you? At the entrance of your stomach is the lower esophageal sphincter, a ring of muscle that opens to let food in and closes tight to keep food and acid in the stomach. If this muscle doesnt close all the way or opens too often, acid can flow back into your esophagus, causing heartburn.

    Do I Have Acid Reflux

Acid reflux happens when acid from your stomach backs up into your throat and causes uncomfortable symptoms like chest pain, a burning sensation in your throat, or a sour taste in your mouth.

Usually, muscles at the top of your stomach open to allow food into the stomach and close to let the stomach process the food. When these muscles are weakened or when there is extra pressure on the stomach, acid can get through these muscles and enter the esophagus.

Acid reflux can happen to anyone at any age and can be worsened by obesity or a poor diet. If your heartburn is severe or occurs for an extended period of time, you may have GERD and will need to visit a doctor for treatment.

    Can Dehydration Cause Hemorrhoids?

The suggestions set out above are just some of the changes you could make to reduce the symptoms of heartburn, and the list is not exhaustive. If you still feel no relief after following them, you should definitely consult your doctor.

The following situations should encourage you to make a doctors appointment as soon as possible:

    • severe signs: if youre experiencing severe signs of heartburn , seek medical help to make sure the exposure to stomach acid doesnt cause irreparable harm to your body
    • uncertainty: talk to a professional if youre not sure whether youre actually experiencing heartburn, as there are some other conditions with overlapping symptoms that point to serious complications
    • frequent GERD: if you experience the symptoms of GERD several times a week then see your doctor immediately, even if the symptoms are mild
    • regular use of over-the-counter medications: being a regular user of over-the-counter antacids or other medications can be dangerous, as they will only neutralise your symptoms but cannot heal the actual inflammation that causes them
    • no relief after medication: if you still have heartburn symptoms even after taking prescription or over-the-counter medications, discuss the matter with your doctor to see where the problem is
    • problems engaging in your daily activities: if frequent or chronic heartburn symptoms are interfering with your daily activities, seek professional help to get your life back on track.

    Avoid Tight Fitting Clothes

Things cinched tightly about your waist or middle can worsen heartburn. If you have super tight jeans on, when you sit down, the waistband is going to sink into your abdomen region. Same goes for tight belts-and even shirts can be a problem for some. This is because all of the above puts extra pressure on your lower esophageal sphincter, which make it more likely stomach contents, will push through and youll experience reflux.

    What Can Cause Heartburn

If you have ever asked, what does heartburn feel like? then you have probably also wondered what causes it in the first place. Unfortunately, heartburn can be caused by many things. In essence, though, heartburn occurs when the esophageal sphincter doesnt close properly and allows stomach acid into the throat.

It can also be exacerbated by certain foods like onions, garlic, citrus, tomatoes, coffee, soda, or simply foods that are high in fat. Being pregnant can also increase your chances of getting heartburn. You may know what heartburn feels like if you are obese or a smoker.

Certain lifestyle habits like drinking excessively or dealing with high levels of stress regularly can also familiarize you with what heartburn feels like.

    Is My Heartburn A Disease

Change GERD/Acid Reflux without medication and stay healthy

Heartburn can be experienced by virtually anyone. It could occur due to foods you eat or be a consequence of obesity. The duration at which you experience these symptoms pushes the diagnosis of acid reflux into disease territory. Occasional acid reflux symptoms are easily remedied with lifestyle changes. However, more serious cases of acid reflux that occur over long periods of time arent as easy to take care of.

When acid reflux goes beyond a general feeling of discomfort and is present after nearly every meal, more drastic measures need to be taken. This often means the use of over-the-counter or prescribed medication to decrease the production of stomach acid.

Antacids Or Otc Drugs Dont Help

If antacid medications stop working to soothe your heartburn, or if they never worked in the first place, your heartburn may have progressed to GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease. With GERD, the stomach acid washing up into your esophagus that causes the burning sensation essentially goes out of control, and untreated GERD can lead to further problems like dyspepsia and esophagitis.

Tests And Surgery For Heartburn And Acid Reflux

If medicines do not help or your symptoms are severe, a GP may refer you to a specialist for:

    • tests to find out what’s causing your symptoms, such as a gastroscopy
    • an operation on your stomach to stop acid reflux called a laparoscopic fundoplication

Is It Just Heartburn Or Gerd

Frequent heartburn can be a major issue. If you experience heartburn two or more times a week, you may have gastroesophageal reflux disease .

In this chronic condition, frequent exposure to stomach acid irritates and damages the esophagus. Over time, that can lead to problems such as difficulty swallowing. An estimated 40 percent of Americans report symptoms of GERD but the condition can significantly improve with lifestyle changes.

If you’ve tried home remedies and lifestyle adjustments and still have frequent heartburn, consult with your family doctor or a gastroenterologist. There are multiple treatments that can help, including medications and minimally invasive surgery for acid reflux.

    Is Heartburn Dangerous

As mentioned before, mild heartburn that passes quite quickly on its own or with the use of over-the-counter medication is generally not dangerous.

However, a chronic form of heartburn called GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, is a more serious condition. It can lead to significant complications and permanent damage to your oesophagus, which can even result in cancer.

So, can you die from heartburn or GERD? The short answer is yes, because if stomach acid is finding its way into your oesophagus too often, or stays there for too long, it can cause serious damage to your body.

Lets have a closer look at some serious conditions that can be caused by GERD:

    Gerd: Relief From Gerd

Topic: Irritable Bowel Syndrome , June 2000

Dr. Lee:A viewer suffers from nausea and stomach burning every night after supper. The only thing that relieves the symptoms is a medication called Gravol. He has tried Prilosec and Pepcid AC without symptom relief. What do you think?

Dr. Marks: Gravol is an antihistamine, diphenhydramine, to be exact, and I dont know why it would be effective in acid reflux orGERD. It is not one of the mainstays of treatment.

The symptoms of GERD usually respond to optimal treatment with medications such as Prilosec and Pepcid. In fact doctors sometimes use acid-suppressing medications as a diagnostic test. If the symptoms go away the problem is likely have been due to acid reflux.

If symptoms do not go away with acid suppressing medications such as Prilosec or other PPI drugs, there are two possible explanations. First, the symptoms may be due to something else other than GERD. Second, the medications are not adequately shutting off the production of stomach acid. This can occur in as many as 1 out of every 5 or 10 patients.

Esophageal pH monitoring can be used to determine why acid suppressing medications are not working. If the pH monitoring study performed while the patient takes his or her medication for reflux shows abnormal amounts of reflux, then treatment is inadequate and needs to be changed .

Dr. Marks: That is certainly true. For detailed discussion of the diagnostic tests for GERD, please refer to our GERD article.

Acid Reflux Sore Throat How Long Does It Take To Heal

When someone has a sore throat that is due to acid reflux this is called Laryngopharyngeal Reflux or sometimes referred to as silent reflux. The reason it is sometimes deemed silent reflux is because the other symptoms that would be common for someone with typical reflux symptoms like heartburn usually arent present. For someone with LPR most of the symptoms revolve around the throat though are other symptoms which you can read about in my LPR symptoms article.

Let me explain a little about how LPR is caused before talking about healing time If you werent aware there is a thing called pepsin which is a digestive enzyme which is used to help digest protein that is produced in the stomach. When you reflux this pepsin refluxes up along with the acid and can enter the throat and basically try and digest it! This is mostly why your throat will feel sore and inflamed because of this pepsin and acid combination.

For someone with silent reflux this pepsin can lay dormant in the throat and can be reactivated more by foods/drinks that are more acidic coming in contact with it so it is important to stick to a certain diet plan to allow your throat to heal properly.

If you have this sore throat and you feel it is because of acid damage then you must follow my suggested treatment advise which entails following my diet as I mentioned above and also taking Gaviscon advance which I write more about here Why Gaviscon Advance is the best Gaviscon.
