Its difficult to make sweeping recommendations about diet that will apply to everyone, Dr. Natarajan says. There is a lot of variation with the types of foods that may affect you. One person may find that spicy foods make their heartburn much worse, while someone else might not be bothered.
Still, if there are foods you know trigger your heartburn, its best to avoid them.
Even more important, look at the bigger picture of your diet, she says. For instance, consider the makeup of your foods: A meal high in fat can make reflux worse.
The nerves that line the GI tract sense fats, protein, and carbs differently, Dr. Levinthal explains. Fats are well known to slow down the rate by which the stomach empties. So if you eat a fatty meal, there is more food in your stomach for longer, and therefore a bigger chance to reflux.
Fatty meals also tend to be higher in calories, which can contribute to obesity. Thats a big problem with acid reflux too. In fact, getting to a healthy weight can help reduce symptoms: Even losing 10 percent of your weight can yield noticeable results, Dr. Levinthal says.

Dont Drink Too Much Coffee
Studies have found that coffee temporarily relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter, increasing the risk of acid reflux .
Some evidence also points toward caffeine as a possible cause. Similarly to coffee, caffeine relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter, which could cause reflux .
Nevertheless, although several studies suggest that coffee and caffeine may worsen acid reflux for some people, the evidence is not entirely conclusive.
For example, one analysis of observational studies found no significant effects of coffee intake on the self-reported symptoms of GERD.
Yet, when researchers investigated the signs of acid reflux with a small camera, they found coffee consumption was linked to greater acid damage in the esophagus .
Thus, whether coffee intake worsens acid reflux may depend on the individual. If you find coffee gives you heartburn, its best to simply avoid it or limit your intake.
Evidence suggests that coffee may make acid reflux and heartburn worse. If you feel like coffee worsens your symptoms, consider limiting your intake.
A Maintain A Healthy Body Weight

A healthy BMI is between 19 and 25, but anyone with a compromised LES should not be at the high end of normal. We recommend a BMI of 24 or less. Why is this important? We wrote a cornerstone article titled How is your excess weight destroying your LES , which we highly recommend you read if you have a BMI greater than 24.
This excess weight does two things that will increase your GERD symptoms. First, it distends the stomach, pulling down on the LES and stretching it out. Over a long-term, this will reduce the effectiveness of the LES to act as an effective barrier between the stomach and the oesophagus.
Second, it puts added pressure on the diaphragm, potentially pushing stomach content into the esophagus. Many research studies have proven that a reduction in BMI will reduce GERD symptoms. In an NIH published paper researchers concluded the following:

What Causes Heartburn And What Does It Feel Like Exactly
Stomach acid is needed to break down the food you eat, something your stomach has no trouble handling. Your esophagus, on the other hand, is irritated by it.
To keep stomach acid in your stomach and out of your esophagus, a circular ring of muscle at the tube’s base, called the lower esophageal sphincter, acts as a valve. When this valve is relaxed, food you’ve consumed is allowed to pass through to your stomach. When contracted, this valve prevents this food and acid from backing up into your esophagus.
