Does anyone out there have any suggestions for someone who had their gallbladder removed and has a hiatal hernia? I am over weight and suffer from what feels like a tight band around my chest and back and burning in my upper abdomen. The doctors want to put me on antacids but they dont help.

  • Can I give Primal Probiotics to my 3 month old son ? He has reflux issues and eczema. Exclusively breastfed and I have changed my diet and taken all allergens out. Just waiting for it to clear out of my milk and his system. He had to be on an antibiotic for his eczema because of an infection and I know he needs a probiotic ! What do you suggest for a baby ? Thank you. I am desperate to know the best thing to give him.

  • Laura Nelsonsays:

for me and my baby shortly after she was born. It helped her a lot. I sprinkled some on my nipple just before nursing her, but Im sure mixing a small amount in with some breastmilk would be fine too. Just a tiny bit made a big difference. Be sure to take it yourself, because your baby will get it from you too. Good luck!

  • Baking Soda For Heartburn: A Long Time Solution

This remedy has a long story behind it.

In fact, it has been used as a low-cost antacid for many years.

In some cases, its also possible that your doctor will suggest you take baking soda to relieve heartburn.

This is right because baking soda has an alkaline pH , which means it can effectively counteract the low pH of your stomach content that goes back into the esophagus.

The key to everything is the ingredient sodium bicarbonate, which temporarily relieves symptoms of acid reflux. This is possible because it neutralizes stomach acid. We can say that sodium bicarbonate is a natural antacid.

Interesting note: the pancreas produces bicarbonate to lower the acidic content of digested foods, along the digestive tract

This is a further demonstration of the effectiveness of using bicarbonate-based products for heartburn and acid reflux.

So, baking soda is considered a good option just because it mimics the effects of natural sodium bicarbonate production by the organism.

Only to make an example, OTC antacids , exactly contain sodium bicarbonate .

    Relieve Heartburn During Pregnancy

Heartburn is a common pregnancy complaint, even among women who never had heartburn before. The most obvious cause? The baby itself. As babies grow in the uterus, they push into the stomach, which can force food and acid back up into the esophagus. An increase in pregnancy hormones can also cause problems. The job of these hormones is to relax abdominal and pelvic muscles to make delivery easier, but they can also cause muscles around the esophageal valve to relax, allowing it to open more easily. And finally, pregnant women may also have trouble digesting their food properly, adding to the heartburn risk.

    Heartburn Or Acid Reflux

Heartburn itself isnt a medical condition, but it can be the symptom of one: acid reflux, a.k.a. gastroesophageal reflux disease . Heartburn is usually the primary symptom of acid reflux but occasionally, the main symptom is nausea instead. So if you feel queasy after you eat or when you wake up in the morning and youre not pregnant ask your doc about the possibility of acid reflux.

In acid reflux, theres a ring of muscle that separates the esophagus and stomach, making a valve, and the valve should be closed, says Dr. Gabbard. When you swallow, the valve opens, but then it closes again. Reflux occurs when that valve opens when its not supposed to. Stomach contents, which generally contain a high level of acid, flow back through the valve into the esophagus. This, in turn, leads to gas, burping and the pain of heartburn.

What Causes Acid Reflux And Heartburn

Pressure from the stomach is one of the main causes of the esophageal valve opening, which is triggered by a few things: overeating, obesity, or spicy/fatty foods.

While overeating, obesity and spicy foods are definitely contributors, people who are a completely normal weight and donât really eat spicy foods still experience symptoms and hereâs why: undigested foods and/or poor bacteria balance in the gut ALSO cause pressure on the stomach, leading to acid reflux. Here’s the thing though, undigested food and/or poor bacteria balance can be a direct result of low stomach acid. Remember that â low stomach acid.

To take this one step further, we know that acid reflux and heartburn are thought to be a result of too much stomach acid interestingly though, GERD incidences increase with age, while stomach acid decreases with age. When tests have been done on groups experiencing symptoms from GERD, over 90% actually had low stomach acid, not high stomach acid.

The stomach naturally has a very low pH, which means most bacteria canât survive in that climate. Without low stomach acid though, bacteria can thrive, and as bacteria digest the food you eat, primarily carbohydrates, they ferment and produce stomach gas, leading us back to the pressure from the stomach causing acid reflux.

The Myth Of Too Much Stomach Acid

The Acid Reflux Solution: How to Get Rid of Heartburn ...

Contrary to whats commonly believed, too much acid is not the problem when it comes to reflux. We need stomach acid, its a critical part of our health and wellbeing. But when it gets pushed into the esophagus, that becomes problematic because the esophagus doesnt have the same protective lining as the stomach, says Stratos.

Stomach acid has a few vital roles in your body: It kills off pathogens, helps break down food, and stimulates pancreatic enzymes and bile during digestion, adds Stratos. The important thing is making sure you have the right amount of acid in your stomach, as well as preventing it from escaping upward into your throat.
