Drinking Water With A Meal:
However, when water is consumed with a meal, a very different stream of events occurs. Water during a meal is used to help lubricate the food we swallow, especially when eating quickly with little chewing/saliva mixing. As water and food simultaneously enter the stomach, this adds volume and expansion of the stomach walls, stimulating the release of digestive juices .
The stomach releases anywhere from 400 to 700 ml of stomach acid to help digest a meal. HCl creates a highly acidic environment in the stomach, with the average pH level of 2.
A few things to keep in mind:

- Most foods , naturally contain a certain level of water. For instance, most fresh fruits and vegetables are made up of > 90% water!
Okay, so knowing these facts, the theorized change in the stomachs pH with consuming extra water with a meal is pretty minimal, almost discretionary! I stumbled upon this mathematical calculation of the change of pH on a paleo-blog that may bring more light to the topic.
I also found this cross-over study on 12 healthy subjects that showed drinking water increased the stomachs pH to > 4 in less than one minute. This alkalizing effect of water dissipated by 3 minutes.

After hours of searching, I was unable to find any other studies directly testing the impact of water on stomach acid .
How To Reduce Heartburn Symptoms When Drinking Alcohol
There are several ways you can cope with heartburn when drinking. The best is to limit your consumption of alcoholic beverages.
Try sticking to one or two drinks instead of overdoing it. If you drink too much, youre not only going to experience more severe heartburn, but youre also going to be hungover the next day.
This will make you feel much worse, so try avoiding that.
Another way is to stick to high-percentage alcohols, such as vodka, tequila, white rum, or gin.
These contain fewer chemicals and compounds that not only give you a massive hangover but are also acidic.
Wine and beer are also more likely to give you heartburn and other acid reflux symptoms than hard liquor. So, while it might seem counterintuitive, try drinking pure alcohol.
In addition, try avoiding mixing your drinks with acidic juices like orange juice, carbonated beverages, or sugary sodas.
These are acidic and will make your acid reflux much worse. Instead, choose mixers like a tonic, club soda, or simply take shots.
This will reduce the amount of pressure put on your stomach and esophagus, easing the symptoms of acid reflux.
Also, make sure to avoid getting too intoxicated, not only to feel better the next day but also because youre more likely to make questionable eating choices.
For example, people under the influence tend to eat fatty foods high in carbs, which worsen your heartburn and other symptoms.

Whats Behind The Heartburn Claims
Your body also has its own pH levels, says Evan Dellon, MD, a gastroenterologist and associate professor of medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. For example, pH tends to be neutral in the blood, lower in the stomach, and higher in the small bowel, he explains.
The alkaline water industry claims that problems can arise when the body becomes acidic, and that their products can neutralize pH and promote a better balance.
But our bodies dont actually need help in this area, says Dr. Dellon: We have an incredibly sophisticated machinery to keep the pH levels where they should be throughout the body, and theres not a lot that you can do, eat, or drink to change that.
One 2012 study done in a lab found that water with a pH of 8.8 did seem to inactivate pepsin, an enzyme related to the production of hydrochloric acid . The water also had a buffering effect against hydrochloric acid itself. These in vitro data suggest that alkaline water may be a useful, risk-free adjunctive treatment for reflux disease, the study authors wrote, although they also stated that more research was needed, including studies in humans.
Dr. Dellon agrees: We really have no evidence that this works in real life scenarios, he says. Meanwhile, we do have many other reflux treatments that are well studied and pretty effective for people.
Why Even Water Can Cause Heartburn
Heartburn is the result of acidic liquid from your stomach entering your esophagus, or the tube that connects your mouth to your stomach. Normally, a valve called the LES maintains a barrier between the esophagus and the stomach, so that the latter’s acidic contents don’t spill into the esophagus. The stomach and LES are protected from acid the esophagus is not.
The LES opens when you swallow food or drink, so that what you consume can enter your stomach. It also occasionally opens momentarily when there’s pressure in your stomach from trapped gas, so you can burp/belch it out. Sometimes, however, it will open up when it shouldn’t, like when the stomach is very full, or when there’s pressure on the stomach . In that case, the acidic liquid can overflow into your esophagus, and you feel pain.

Even though there is no food, acid is released once water enters into the stomach. Water along with stomach juices can enter into the lower esophagus, especially when the sphincter is weak.
What Is Acid Reflux And How Does It Occur
Perhaps more commonly known as heartburn or indigestion, acid reflux is often caused by Gastroesophageal reflux disease .
It is primarily caused by reactivation of the enzyme known as pepsin. Pepsinogen is activated and converted into pepsin in the presence of stomach acid. The primary purpose of pepsin is to break proteins down into amino acids making them easier for your body to absorb.
The enzyme becomes inactive after this process but is subsequently reactivated by consuming acidic foods and drinks. This can cause tissue inflammation leading that uncomfortable burning sensation in your stomach and esopheagus.

Doctors Don’t Recommend Alkaline Water
Heartburn is caused by a flow of stomach acid backward into the esophagus, and drinking an alkaline solution may neutralize that fluid for a few minutes, according to Dr. Dellon. But it wont solve the underlying problem of why that acids there in the first place.
Its no different than taking a Tums or drinking a lot of milkwhich some people with reflux like to do because milk is also slightly alkaline, he says.
Drinking regular water may provide some relief, as well: It will raise the pH of your stomach, dilute the acid, and clear out the esophagusso theres lots of good reasons to drink water in general, and to stay hydrated, Dr. Dellon adds.
Patricia Raymond, MD, a physician in Norfolk, Virginia, and fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology, says her patients ask her about the alkaline diet and alkaline water as alternative treatments for reflux, but she doesnt recommend either.
I do support complementary medicine when we know that it can actually help, she explains. But the medical opinion is really lacking on alkaline water. Were not excited about it as a potential treatment.
Recommendations For Dealing With Water

Is Alkaline Water Good For Heartburn
