Can I Drink Soda If I Have Acid Reflux

by Patient Expert

Soda is often on the “do not drink” list for treating gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD. When you combine the high acid content of soda with the carbonation or bubbles in the soda, it is likely there will be backwashing, burping or belching. You may also feel the acid burning in your throat and chest or experience bloating and fullness. I know many children with reflux cannot tolerate soda or drinks with carbonation. My two refluxers avoid soda in favor or water or other non carbonated beverages. Once in a while, they will have a few sips of soda. Usually they regret it later when they start feeling bloated and have uncomfortable, acidic burps and belches. But what if soda is your comfort drink and you just have to have a soda or two to get through the day? Can you still have a soda if you have gastroesophageal reflux disease?

I want to know your thoughts on this topic. I know the dedicated soda drinking may come after me and tell me to leave them alone. Our comfort foods and drinks are diverse and personal-they help us get through the day. Can you drink soda despite having GERD? Do you experience pain or discomfort, burping or belching from drinking soda? Did you have to stop drinking soda because of your reflux? Were you able to find other drinks that replaced soda?

The Worst Foods For Acid Reflux

Acid reflux, with its accompanying heartburn pain, is no joke. Sure, its the fodder for all kinds of silly TV commercials, but when the pain and discomfort strikes, nobodys laughing. According to Healthline, acid reflux occurs when stomach acid reverses direction and backs up into the esophagus. Something called the lower esophageal sphincter, or LES is supposed to prevent that from happening, but if the LES is weakened or damaged, it cant do its job properly so the stomach acid it should be containing may instead leak out of the stomach and make the upward journey to the back of your throat.

There are all kinds of OTC meds you can swallow to take the edge off this discomfort, of course, and even hard candies can help, since they increase saliva production and saliva can help to neutralize stomach acid. Still, if you want to avoid acid reflux altogether, the best cure is always prevention. If youre able to identify and then avoid the foods most likely to trigger your reflux attacks, you wont have to worry so much about after-meal misery. Everyones body is different, so youll need to figure out what foods are most likely to cause problems for you, but the following foods are among the common culprits known to cause heartburn in many people.

What Are The Effects Of Acid In Sodas And Other Drinks

Acidic drinks can greatly affect your teeth. The lower the pH level, the worse it is for your teeth. Acidic drinks cause the enamel on your teeth to wear down. The enamel is the strong outer layer that provides your teeth with protection.

Once this enamel is weakened, it does not naturally repair itself. Weakened enamel can cause long-term tooth erosion, which is something that is permanent.

Who Put The Fizz In Fizz

An English chemist, Joseph Priestley, gets the credit for inventing carbonated water in 1767. Priestley described his happiest discovery in a paper entitled Impregnating Water with Fixed Air.

Johann Jacob Schweppe, a Swiss-German watchmaker and amateur chemist, was the first to find a way to produced bottled carbonated water. The drink soon became very popular, endorsed by notable figures such as Erasmus Darwin and King William IV.

Why Baking Soda Works For Acid Reflux

The key to baking sodas ability to treat acid reflux lies in its active ingredient: sodium bicarbonate. OTC antacids like Alka-Seltzer contain sodium bicarbonate, which is what makes them work.

Your pancreas naturally produces sodium bicarbonate to protect your intestines. Baking soda is thought to mimic the effects of this process. As an absorbable antacid, sodium bicarbonate quickly neutralizes stomach acid and temporarily relieves symptoms of acid reflux.

Caution: The sudden decrease in stomach acidity can cause acid rebound . Relief may only be temporary, and your symptoms of acid reflux may return even worse than before.

The same type of baking soda you use to bake or to absorb smells from your fridge can neutralize stomach acid. Its also cheaper in that form, compared to OTC medications.

For people who dont like the taste of baking soda, there are OTC and prescription tablets. Most of them dissolve easily in water. See the instructions on the box for the recommended dosage.

Some of these other forms include:

  • capsules
  • granules
  • solutions

Alka-Seltzer is the most common brand-name OTC medication that contains sodium bicarbonate. Sodium bicarbonate is also used in some medications with the PPI omeprazole to make omeprazole more effective, rather than being used for immediate relief of symptoms.

What About H Pylori

As mentioned in my previous post, an overgrowth of organisms such as candida and H. pylori can lower stomach acid levels. Somewhere between 1/3 and 2/3 of the human population carries H. pylori many times without any symptoms at all.

When acquired early in life, research suggests that h. pylori may actually be protective against allergies and asthma. On the other hand, it also has a causative relationship with ulcers and gastric cancer.

So is H. pylori good or bad? In this talk, Chris Kresser LAc describes it as a somewhat neutral bacteria which may have benefits for some people and downsides for others .

Normally, adequate levels of stomach acid will keep H. pylori levels in check. However, if acid levels dip for any reason , H. pylori may use that opportunity to grow out of control. To protect itself from being killed, H. pylori secretes an enzyme called urease which neutralizes hydrochloric acid. If H. pylori is present in significant quantities, it can release a substantial amount of urease and further lower stomach acid, creating a nice, cozy Hotel H. Pylori in the process.

According to my friend Sylvie, who opted for a natural approach after being diagnosed with H. pylori, the usual treatment protocol now fails for about 35% of patients and the effectiveness is still falling. The reason is because bacteria has become resistant to antibiotics.

In this article she outlines the natural strategy she used and shares her actual before/after lab results.
