When To Call Your Doctor
If you’re older than 45 or have other risks for diabetes, it’s important to get tested. When you spot the condition early, you can avoid nerve damage, heart trouble, and other complications.
As a general rule, call your doctor if you:
- Feel sick to your stomach, weak, and very thirsty
- Are peeing a lot
- Have a bad belly ache
- Are breathing more deeply and faster than normal
- Have sweet breath that smells like nail polish remover

Heartburn Symptoms And Triggers
The most common telltale symptom of heartburn is a burning sensation, but it’s not the only one. While people experience heartburn differently, there are other common symptoms of heartburn to watch out for as well as different heartburn triggers that can bring on pain and discomfort.
So, how do you know if you have heartburn instead of something more serious? Which foods, drinks and lifestyle choices can trigger heartburn? See these checklists to learn more about possible symptoms, and what causes heartburn.

How Long Can You Live With Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes doesnt have to be a chronic condition. To the contrary, a type 2 diabetes diagnosis is the moment to begin changing habits and working towards a healthier and longer life. What you do every day can make a difference, says Dr. Christofides. Park at the far-end of the lot. Try taking the stairs. Consider buying only fresh foods and avoiding things in packages.
There is no one best type 2 diabetes diet. Focus on fresh, and focus on balance. Include vegetables, lean proteins , whole grains, nuts, seeds, legumes, and whole fruits.
Get moving. Exercise is one of the most important things you can do for overall health, including mental well-being. Fitness is also one of the best ways to keep weight off once youve lost it.
Find activities you enjoy and try sharing those with friends and family. Exercise doesnt have to happen in the gym. Grab a friend and go for a fast walk through the neighborhood or take a hike in the park. The vitamin D will give you an extra boost of health and well-being.
How Does Type 2 Diabetes Relate To Insulin Resistance
Insulin resistance causes type 2 diabetes, but a person can have insulin resistance without having type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is about energy in and energy out, explains Dr. Chistofides. In the case of type 2 diabetes, there is a mismanagement between how the body matches energy intake and energy demand. Insulin insensitivity is the symptom of this energy mismanagement that can lead to insulin resistance.
If you have a diet high in processed foods with added sugar, initially your body will keep releasing insulin as it tries to absorb and use glucose. If you have prediabetes and dont limit your over-consumption of sugary foods, heres what can happen:

High Blood Pressure Risks
Type 1 diabetes damages arteries and makes them susceptible to hardening , which can lead to high blood pressure and other heart and circulation problems. Unfortunately, undiagnosed or prolonged high blood sugar levels can result in damage to organ systems in the body over time. People with type 1 diabetes have a high risk of vision problems, heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, gum disease, tooth loss, and nerve damage . Other organs may also be damaged.
Type 1 Diabetes And Pregnancy
Women with type 1 diabetes need to let their doctors know if they plan to become pregnant. Poor control of their blood sugars may cause complications such as birth defects. Planning ahead, even before conception, to control blood sugar levels can lower the risk of miscarriage and birth defects. During pregnancy, it is important to test blood glucose often and keep your A1c below 7%. Good blood sugar control can reduce other complications during pregnancy such as high blood pressure or retinal damage in the mother.
Preeclampsia is a condition that 18%-30% of pregnant women with diabetes develop. Preeclampsia develops after the 20-week mark and is characterized by high blood pressure and proteins in the urine. It is important to treat preeclampsia, if untreated it may harm the baby and put the mother at risk for stroke and seizures. Once the baby is born and if the mother is breastfeeding, it is important for her to check her glucose levels frequently.

Risk Factors Of Type 2 Diabetes
Most people may be aware that being overweight increases the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, but there are a few other factors. In fact, not all people with Type 2 are overweight. Diabetes is complex and no two people with the disease are the same.
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases offers a list for Type 2 diabetes risk factors, which includes:
- Age 45 years or older
- Being overweight
- Parent, brother or sister with diabetes
- Family background: African American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian, Asian American or Pacific Islander
- Gestational diabetes while pregnant or had a baby weighing 9 pounds or more
- Higher than normal blood glucose
- Blood pressure above 140/90 or high normal blood pressure
- High cholesterol levels, HDL lower than 35 or triglycerides above 250
- Being physically active less than three times a week
- Having discolored, dirty looking skin in the armpits or around the neck despite scrubbing
- Blood vessel problems in the heart, brain or legs
Find Out The Differences Between The Two
Acid Reflux and GERD are tied closely togetherbut most people arent aware of what differentiates them. Here’s an easy way to know the difference: Acid Reflux occurs when the acid in your stomach backs up, or refluxes, into your esophagus, causing heartburn. And Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease is chronic or recurring acid reflux.1
Many things can cause acid reflux, including foods like coffee and chocolate, being overweight or pregnant, or eating too much or too quickly.
But what’s actually happening inside you? At the entrance of your stomach is the lower esophageal sphincter, a ring of muscle that opens to let food in and closes tight to keep food and acid in the stomach. If this muscle doesn’t close all the way or opens too often, acid can flow back into your esophagus, causing heartburn.

What Are The Symptoms Of Acid Reflux
A big symptom of acid reflux is a burning sensation, otherwise referred to as heartburn, which occurs when acid creeps back up the esophagus from the stomach. Thats why people grasp at their chestthe pain can literally take their breath away.
Since acid is flowing backward, aka up the esophagus, swallowing can be difficult and there could be the feeling that theres a lump in the throat. But the symptoms dont stop thereother parts of the body take the heat, too.
There are lots of factors that go into a good nights sleep, and feeling like your chest is burning isnt one. Nighttime acid reflux can disrupt sleep, make asthma worse, and may cause coughing, according to the Mayo Clinic. So consuming things that can help prevent these symptoms is key for making sure it doesnt mess up slumber, which then leads to other adverse effects.
Gestational Diabetes Risk Factors
More important than looking for the signs and symptoms of gestational diabetes is knowing if youre at risk. Certain women may be more likely to develop the condition, including:
- Women older than 25 years old
- Family history of type 2 diabetes
- Personal history of prediabetes
- Gestational diabetes in previous pregnancies
- Overweight or obese
- Non-white race

Risk Factors Of Type 1 Diabetes
Although the cause of Type 1 diabetes is unknown, there may be a hereditary component. The tendency to develop autoimmune disorders, such as Type 1 diabetes, is typically passed down from one family member to the next, meaning some people may simply be more genetically prone to acquiring the disease. This seems to especially be the case for children born to fathers with Type 1 diabetes, according to one large family study of diabetes.
A certain genetic marker that has been shown to make a person more susceptible to Type 1 diabetes is located on a specific chromosome known as chromosome 6. A chromosome is a threadlike structure contained in the nucleus the central part of a cell where genetic information is held in the form of genes. The genetic connection for Type 1 is situated on chromosome 6 in the form of a human leukocyte antigen , which is a gene complex that encodes certain proteins responsible for the regulation of a persons immune system.
However, having one or more of these HLA complexes does not always lead to the development of Type 1 diabetes. A genetic predisposition to Type 1 is just one factor among other possible risk factors making it more likely a person will develop the disease.
Other risk factors include:
A less common cause of Type 1 diabetes is injury to the pancreas. This injury and damage to the organ and its cells can result from toxins, trauma or surgery.
Gastrointestinal Complications Of Diabetes
AMER SHAKIL, MD, ROBERT J. CHURCH, MD, and SHOBHA S. RAO, MD, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, Dallas, Texas
Am Fam Physician. 2008 Jun 15 77:1697-1702.
Patient information: See related handout on gastroparesis, written by the authors of this article.
Gastrointestinal complications of diabetes have become more common as the rate of diabetes has increased. These complications and their symptoms are often caused by abnormal GI motility, which is a consequence of diabetic autonomic neuropathy involving the GI tract. Although some studies have indicated that diabetic autonomic neuropathy is linked to the duration of diabetes, the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial suggested that, at least in persons with type 1 diabetes, neuropathy and other GI complications are associated with poor blood glucose control and not necessarily the duration of diabetes.13 GI conditions caused by diabetes include gastroparesis, intestinal enteropathy , and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

What Are The Warning Signs Of Gestational Diabetes
Pregnant women have heard tales or experienced it themselves of the orange drink they have to take around 24 to 28 weeks of pregnancy. Its a story thats passed from woman to woman about the overly sweet, syrupy taste of the drink and having to sit in the doctors office for blood tests.
But this important screening is worth the inconvenience. It detects and diagnoses gestational diabetes in pregnant women. Gestational diabetes affects nearly 10 percent of pregnant women, according to the American Diabetes Association.
Gestational diabetes, left untreated and unmanaged, can pose serious health risks to your baby, including:
- Excessive birth weight
- Preterm birth and respiratory distress syndrome
- Low blood sugar at birth
- Increased risk of type 2 diabetes later in life
Fortunately, gestational diabetes is easy to diagnose and manage, says Barbara E. Simpson, M.D., a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist. The fasting blood sugar test can make sure mom and baby stay healthy and happy.
Can Obesity Cause Type 2 Diabetes
How we understand obesity and type 2 diabetes matters as they are the most widespread metabolic disorders. Though theyre separate conditions, they often overlap.
Weight and nutrition specialist Caroline Apovian MD explains, Although lifestyle is very important for both obesity treatment and diabetes, there are people who never develop obesity, and there are people who do have obesity for whom lifestyle changes dont always work, because obesity is a disease and the body defends a higher body weight set point. Even after weight loss, the hormonal changes involved in obesity can force a patient to regain the weight.
Type 2 diabetes patients did not bring it on themselves, emphasizes diabetes and metabolism expert Elena Christofides MD. This is not a moral failing.
But both the prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes is increasing. Why? Researchers believe its our environment. There has been an increased availability of high-fat, high-sugar, highly processed foods. These foods often contain other non-food items.
Some of these ingredients have been found to act as endocrine disrupters and change the way our bodies store fat and process energy. While there have not been sufficient studies to prove a causal relationship, most doctors and nutritionists recommend avoiding them.

Risks And Warnings About The Usage Of Peanuts For Acid Reflux
Although many researchers have a dispute in stating whether peanuts are good or bad for reflux, it is preferable to talk to a doctor if you wish to add peanuts to the diet. You can commence by adding a small quantity as a snack at any point between morning and evening. Watch out for the symptoms, and if possible make a note of the same.
Try to increase the quantity and see if there are any changes to the symptoms. If not, then peanuts are not alleviating the symptoms of acid flux. But do remember that they are high in fat content. Therefore, you will have to consume them in preferred quantity so that you will not gain excessive weight or increase the fat content that supports acid reflux symptoms.
Going ahead with diet based plan along with the inclusion of exercises is an excellent way to reduce or eradicate the symptoms of acid reflux permanently.

While painful and disruptive, occasional heartburn isn’t a serious medical condition. However, more severe heartburn symptoms can sometimes feel like a heart attack which does require immediate medical attention. How can you tell the difference between heartburn and a heart attack?
To compare, here are the typical signs and symptoms of a heart attack:
- Chest pain and discomfort that includes pressure, fullness, tightness and an aching or squeezing sensation
- Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, shoulder, back, neck or jaw
- Shortness of breath
- Breaking into a cold sweat
- Nausea, indigestion, vomiting, abdominal pain or heartburn
- Lightheadedness or sudden dizziness
If you have any doubt about the source of your pain, or experience any of the symptoms associated with a heart attack, get emergency treatment immediately.
