Home Remedy For Acid Reflux Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is one of the most popular home remedies for acid reflux. It counteracts the reduced acid production.

Some people get acid reflux relief by consuming between 1/2 teaspoon to 2 tablespoons of ACV in room temperature or warm water right before a meal.

Others prefer a similar dosage upon rising in the morning and before going to bed at night. My husband does a shot of plain apple cider vinegar after a meal for acid reflux relief.

Start with a smaller amount of ACV and work up to larger amounts if needed. The flavor is pretty strong, even in water, and some people find it very unpleasant.

You can also mix apple cider vinegar into tea in place of lemon. Organic ACV is best, because apples are at the top of the Dirty Dozen list of contaminated produce.

What Is Olive Brine

Olive brine is the result of soaking olives in a mix of water, vinegar, and salt. The longer the olives remain in the liquid, the stronger the flavor of olives in the brine. The salty taste is due to both the sodium and the vinegar, which tends to come through loud and clear.

What do you use olive brine for? Many people cook with it. Here are some culinary suggestions for incorporating olive brine:

  • Pour it into a sauteed chard or broccoli rabe or any kale dish
  • Use the brine as dressing for slaw with jalapeno, carrot, purple cabbage, celery, apple, and fennel
  • Combine orange zest and olive brine for a great-tasting aioli
  • Add it to a vinaigrette with Dijon mustard, white wine vinegar, grapefruit juice, and olive oil
  • Include it in pizza sauce or marinara

Is olive brine good for you? Its not necessarily great for your health due to the inclusion of sodium, but its not bad for you either if its consumed in moderate quantities. Due to the salty taste, olive brine is not something you want to drink on its own.

The Truth About Pickle Juice And Heartburn

Pickle Juice for Heartburn: Good Idea or Myth?

Heartburn occurs when stomach acid is regurgitated from the stomach back into your esophagus. Its a symptom of acid reflux and gastroesophageal reflux disease .

It typically causes an uncomfortable and painful burning sensation in your chest just behind your breastbone. It may get worse after you eat or drink or when you lay down flat on your back or stomach.

Heartburn can be triggered by several different things, including stress, eating spicy or acidic foods, or overeating.

So why would anyone think pickle juice helps? The connection isnt completely random. Pickle juice is a concentrated source of Lactobacillus, which is a healthy probiotic bacteria found in your gut microbiome and also on the skin of cucumbers.

Consuming Lactobacillus is thought to boost the good bacteria in your gut. One of the advantages is that it may calm the regurgitation of acid up through the esophagus. However, theres currently no evidence that pickle juice helps alleviate heartburn.

Bloody Marys are either loved or hated, kind of like pickles. My absolute favorite way to use up the rest of the pickle juice is to add a dash, or more, to your Sunday bloody Mary.

Pickle Juice: Can It Help With Acid Reflux

Thats right many people who suffer from acid reflux swear that drinking pickle juice is a fast, natural way to help relieve their symptoms. And while you may love a slice of pickle with your sandwich or even enjoy one just straight out of the jar, theres a big taste difference between eating a pickle and drinking the juice that cucumbers are pickled in to become, well, pickles. If you are someone who can manage to drink pickle juice without puckering, its impressive, but unfortunately theres no research to prove that it will actually relieve acid reflux.

The reasoning behind drinking pickle juice for acid reflux is that its a straight shot to giving your gut a nice dose of lactic acid bacteria a good, probiotic bacteria found in cucumbers that promotes intestine health. But fermenting cucumbers into pickles and putting them through processing removes a lot of lactic acid bacteria it originally contained, meaning it will likely do little when it comes to squashing heartburn. Vinegar, the other main component of pickles, has been said to bring some people acid reflux ease, but in others it can exacerbate heartburn symptoms, making it extremely person-dependent and probably not worth the risk of irritating your acid reflux even more.

Dill Pickles Are Basically Calorie Free

Pickles are considered what many call negative calorie foods meaning that the calories burned while eating them, equate to more than the food itself. In the case of dill pickles, that typically ranges from around 0-24 calories per serving. So chew away, youre burning the calories as you go!

While their sweet variety has added sugar and therefore an increase in calories, the classic vinegar or dill brined pickles are nothing to shy away from when youre watching your caloric intake. Take note though because like mentioned before, too many of a good thing can turn into a bad thing. Since pickles are high in sodium, you may see water weight pack on if youre enjoying too many of these calorie-free treats.

    • Secondly, mix the chopped garlic, ground ginger, chopped dill, and seasonings with the vinegar. Add water to the mixer to make a brine. Also, if you want to add sweeteners, mix them with the brine.
    • After that, take a clean jar and pack the sliced cucumber into the jar. Then pour the brine into it. Make sure to fill it up all the way.
    • Finally, seal the jar tightly and store it in the refrigerator for 2-3weeks or more. The more time you will leave them, the more flavorful the cucumbers will become. However, you can eat them after storing them only for a night or two.

The obvious difference is taste. Slamming a shot of pickle juice is much more pleasant than vinegar. The acidic substance that staves off cramps in pickle juice is vinegar and so drinking both would have the same effect.

Another benefit is that vinegar and substances that include vinegar will ease heartburn. But be careful. Livestrong also had this remedy, but the only research is word-of-mouth.
