Sparkling Water And Your Bones

How Fast Does Baking Soda Work For Acid Reflux?

Worries about this sparkly stuff directly affecting your bones dont hold water.

The concern that overconsumption of sparkling water could cause bone health issueslike increased risk of fractures and osteoporosis seems to stem from research showing an association between cola consumption and low bone density in women, Abby Abelson, M.D., chair of the department of rheumatic and immunologic diseases and director of education at the Center for Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Disease at the Cleveland Clinic, tells SELF.

Some observational studies do suggest a link between colabut not other carbonated beveragesand lower bone mass density as well as an increased risk of fractures, according to the National Institutes of Health . It was first theorized that the high amount of phosphorus added to cola was to blame because it lowered calcium levels. However, the NIH now says that the association between cola and low bone density is most likely because people are replacing bone-building milk with cola.

Dairy milk contains high levels of calcium and vitamin D, which promote bone growth and strength and help prevent osteoporosis in older adults, according to the NIH. Dairy milk and fortified plant-based milk are often primary sources of calcium and vitamin D in many peoples diets, and vitamin D especially can be hard to find in foods that arent dairy-based or fortified, according to the NIH.

The Worst Foods For Acid Reflux

Acid reflux, with its accompanying heartburn pain, is no joke. Sure, its the fodder for all kinds of silly TV commercials, but when the pain and discomfort strikes, nobodys laughing. According to Healthline, acid reflux occurs when stomach acid reverses direction and backs up into the esophagus. Something called the lower esophageal sphincter, or LES is supposed to prevent that from happening, but if the LES is weakened or damaged, it cant do its job properly so the stomach acid it should be containing may instead leak out of the stomach and make the upward journey to the back of your throat.

There are all kinds of OTC meds you can swallow to take the edge off this discomfort, of course, and even hard candies can help, since they increase saliva production and saliva can help to neutralize stomach acid. Still, if you want to avoid acid reflux altogether, the best cure is always prevention. If youre able to identify and then avoid the foods most likely to trigger your reflux attacks, you wont have to worry so much about after-meal misery. Everyones body is different, so youll need to figure out what foods are most likely to cause problems for you, but the following foods are among the common culprits known to cause heartburn in many people.

Drinking Carbonated Water Can Help You To Lose Weight

When CO2 is released from solvency, it changes to a gaseous state. The total volume of water and carbon dioxide gas is greater than the total volume of the carbonic acid solution. The more it fizzes, the more space it fills.

A glass of still water wont change in volume after youve ingested it. The water will be somewhat dispersed, of course, but the total volume will be unchanged.

A glass of carbonated water, however, will change in volume. As the CO2 effervesces, it becomes a gas, which takes up more space than it did in solution. The water is dispersed and absorbed, but the carbon dioxide temporarily fills your digestive tract, suppressing feelings of hunger.

If youre trying to lose weight, take the edge off your appetite by drinking a glass of sparkling water before meals.

The Effect Of Carbonated Beverages On Upper Gut Motility

The effect of carbonated beverages on lower oesophageal sphincter tone has been evaluated by one study. In this study, oesophageal manometry was performed in nine healthy volunteers after ingestion of tap water and different carbonated beverages . All carbonated beverages produced at least a 20-min reduction of approximately 3050% in lower oesophageal sphincter resting pressure, overall length, and intra-abdominal length. The authors postulated that the decrease in LES pressure is mediated by gaseous distention of the stomach because of the carbonation. The authors further proposed that the aforementioned effect of carbonated beverages on the LES is the underlying mechanism for heartburn in subjects consuming these drinks. However, the study was conducted in a small number of healthy subjects. In addition, the authors did not measure changes in transient LES relaxation rate or demonstrated any evidence of increase in oesophageal acid exposure as a result of carbonated beverage consumption.

Overall, the aforementioned studies demonstrated that consumption of a carbonated beverage with a meal does not significantly alter gastric emptying.

Bananas are usually low in acid, so sometimes, they can be recommended as a fruit that can help reduce acid reflux.

We Turn To A Few Health Professionals About The Possible Health Impacts Of Regular Diet

Theres nothing quite like cracking open a cold can of diet soda to accompany a late-night pizza order or a piping hot plate of sesame chicken. Some days, it feels like a reward for small victories. Hours of productivity pave the way for a 2 p.m. trip to the vending machine and the bubbly stuff. But weve all seen the scary reports about the possible negative impacts of diet-soda consumption. In fact, if you drink diet soda around enough people, someone will start going off about how bad it is for you. Should we be discouraged from scrounging up quarters for a fizzy drink?

Research so far has been inconclusive. Many studies link low-calorie soda consumption to certain health risks, but science has yet to prove definitively that drinking diet soda causes strokes, heart attacks, vascular disease or depression, as frequently reported. This year, researchers with the long-running Framingham Heart Study published results in the American Heart Association journal Stroke, noting an association between consumption of artificially sweetened beverages and higher risks of stroke and dementiabut not cause and effect.

In this study and many others like it, reverse causality could provide a possible explanation. In other words, people who are already at great risk for disease made the switch from regular soda to diet soda. are already at a higher risk for some of these because of diet, lifestyle and genetics, says Marisa Moore, a registered dietitian nutritionist.

How Baking Soda Works To Help Heartburn

Home Remedy For Heartburn! Using Baking Soda For Heartburn Does It Really Work??

When you are using baking soda to aid heartburn it basically acts as a baking soda antacid mixture, to make this mixture you will mix it the baking soda with water and this combination makes a water that is alkaline.

When I say alkaline on the pH scale everything above pH 7 is alkaline, on the pH scale neutral is 7 with everything lower being acidic as the number drops more acidic and everything above 7 being alkaline and more alkaline as the number climbs higher. This mixture of the baking soda and water is about a pH of 8-9. For reference below I have some examples to give you a better idea of pH levels in foods.

pH 1 Lemon Juice

pH 2 Vinegar, Orange Juice

pH 3 Soda, Cheese

pH 8 Almonds, Cabbage

pH 9 Celery, Olive Oil

When you consume foods/drinks that are more on the lower end of this scale you will likely be more prone to having heartburn symptoms due to their higher acidity. Though if you make yourself some water and add baking soda you will have a drink that is about a pH of 8 which will help neutralize the acid in the esophagus and balance the stomach acid and will help alleviate the heartburn.
