Yogurt For Acid Reflux: Pros And Cons

Is Yogurt Good for Acid Reflux ? How Does Yogurt Help Heartburn ?

Certain acid reflux experts are promoting yogurt as a form of treatment due to its probiotic content. These living microorganisms balance the composition of bacteria found in the gut.

An overgrowth of harmful bacteria in the small intestine may be responsible for stimulating the opening of the esophageal sphincter, which allows the stomach acid to enter the food pipe and cause acid reflux.

The most common probiotics, or live cultures, found in yogurt are Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophiles strains. These bacteria convert the lactose in milk to lactic acid. Some yogurts also contain Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, and bifidus to help speed the healing of certain ailments and balance the digestive system.

A probiotic-rich diet may offset the adverse effects of medications, such as painful cramping, bloating, and diarrhea.

Acid reflux patients with a lactose sensitivity can also benefit from yogurt as it is lower in lactose than milk. Lactose-free or low-lactose dairy products are recommended on an acid reflux diet to prevent a rise in the levels of stomach acid.

Yogurt may also provide relief from acid reflux and GERD symptoms. Although doctors often advise those with acid reflux to avoid foods high in saturated fats and trans fats, the polyunsaturated fats found in full-fat yogurt have been shown to reduce the levels of acid seen in this disease.

The Importance Of Acidity

If youre living with acid reflux, particularly if its frequent its important to concentrate on the acidity of foods. Youll want to avoid highly acidic foods and you can check this by looking at the pH level on the label.

7 is neutral pure water tends to be around 7. Anything above 7 is categorized as an alkaline.

Eating more alkaline foods is the better option if youre dealing with acid reflux or heartburn and keeping with a balanced diet, should be able to regulate your stomachs acid levels.

Its been suggested, too, that eating more alkaline foods can have a positive effect on the maintenance of muscle mass as you age.

Some people feel that alkaline water is helpful.

Choose Small Frequent Meals To Help Acid Reflux With Cancer Treatment

Choose small, frequent meals. Instead of eating 3 big meals per day, which is common in an American diet, try to eat small meals 5-6 times daily. This is important for two reasons: it prevents eating too big of a meal and avoiding an empty stomach. When your stomach is empty for long periods, acid can accumulate in your stomach. This can increase the pain in your digestive tract. Try your best to have something on your stomach at all times and especially during times of the day that you typically experience acid reflux. While you are undergoing cancer treatment, it is crucial to eat regularly throughout the day to prevent heartburn, but also prevent weight loss and malnutrition. Crackers, pretzels, fruit, and yogurt are good options to snack on to prevent acid reflux.

How Is Heartburn Diagnosed

Often all that a health-care professional requires is a thorough history and physical to make the preliminary diagnosis of heartburn. To evaluate if there is any damage and how severe your heartburn is, the doctor my suggest some of the following tests:

  • Endoscopy: A flexible scope is passed down the esophagus to examine the esophagus as well as the stomach. Biopsies can be taken if indicated. This lets the doctor see if there is any obvious damage, and also eliminate other reasons for the patientâs symptoms .
  • Upper GI series : After drinking a liquid that coats the inside of the digestive tract, X-rays are taken. These X-rays will show the outline of the digestive system.
  • Ambulatory pH testing: This test measures the acidity in the esophagus via a small tube that goes through the nose into the stomach.

Treating Reflux In A Natural Way

I am a huge believer in natural medicine. When I started giving my son natural remedies for reflux, they really worked! Aloe Vera, ginger, probiotics, and coconut oil, are my favorite natural reflux remedies. A while ago I posted about the properties and benefits of all of these in my 5 Natural Remedies For Acid Reflux article. You can learn in full detail how each one helps.

Please remember, though, that every person is different and what works for my son might not work for other kids. These are the natural remedies that really made a difference for him. And again, it goes without saying that we check with his pediatrician and GI specialist when we make a decision to treat a condition the natural way.

More Ways To Avoid Heartburn

Sometimes it not just what you eat, but how you eat. Check out these tips for taming those searing symptoms.

Dont slouch when eating. It may be tempting to settle into the cushions and watch TV while inhaling that plate of Buffalo wings. But sitting less than straight while you chow down can encourage gastric juices to head in the wrong direction. Doctors say its also important stay upright for 45 to 60 minutes after eating. If stomach acid does escape, gravity will send that noxious stuff back to where it belongs: your stomach. Liquid and gas want to go to the path of least resistance, Pichetshote says. If youre laying down it can easily go up toward your head. If youre a little more upright, it has to fight gravity to move upward. The same goes for sleeping: Wait at least two to three hours after eating before hitting the sack.

Find your sweet spot. Overeating is never a good idea. When your stomach is distended and bloated, acid can rise back into the esophagus, triggering symptoms. But an empty stomach can cause problems, too. Go more than three to four hours without a meal or snack, and stomach acid which would usually be used in the digestive process to break down food collects. The best approach? Eat smaller meals and eat slowly. And choose water to wash things down.

Milk Vs Yogurt For Acidity & Heartburn

While the two are dairy products, milk and yogurt have various impacts on acid reflux. Keep reading to discover why yogurt is beneficial for acid reflux and why milk isnt.

Difference Between milk & yogurt: Yogurt is made by including bacterial cultures to pasteurized, homogenized milk. The bacteria convert lactose in the milk into lactic acid. This reaction makes it acidic, with a pH value of 4-5.

Yogurt, though acidic in character, is a low acid-forming food since it doesnt influence the acid-alkaline equilibrium of the body.

Yogurt has probiotics or good bacteria: Bad bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract are among the causes of acid reflux. Probiotics are germs , which are great for the body. These probiotics or good bacteria stop the undesirable bacteria from growing quickly. Probiotics may help in reducing inflammation of the gut due to acid reflux.

Yogurt is easier to digest: The germs release an enzyme in the stomach, which makes it easier to break down lactose. Due to its sugar content, lactose is not easy to digest.

Foods That Could Trigger Heartburn And Indigestion

Each person is unique, and what triggers stomach problems for you may not be what triggers them in someone else. Keeping a food diary is useful for determining what foods trigger your indigestion. Once your food triggers are identified, it is best to eliminate them from your diet completely to avoid experiencing further stomach problems and heartburn episodes. That being said, there are several foods that are known to trigger indigestion in many people, including:

  • Caffeinated beverages

Pistachio Crusted Salmon With Citrus Zest

Hi all. Its been awhile since Ive re-visited some of my earlier recipes. So much has changed since I started blogging in 2012. As many of you know, I currently focus on GERD-diet therapy. My goal is to create more tasty, practical recipes for those with acid reflux issues. So Im thrilled to share this delicious Pistachio Crusted Salmon recipe.

Ive been going through old recipes to see what I can adjust . Heres a recipe I recently adjusted. So, lets break it down, so you can see the anatomy of my GERD-friendly Pistachio Crusted Salmon:

How To Begin Drinking Milk Kefir

Is Yogurt Good for GERD?

Just because you get heartburn when you drink milk kefir does not mean you should stop drinking it. In fact, it probably means that your body needs good bacteria in milk kefir all the more.

What you will need to do is ease into drinking milk kefir slowly. Start off with 1-2 Tbsp of milk kefir a day and slowly work yourself up as you begin to tolerate it better.

If you are having a lot of heartburn, take a break for 2-3 days until your heartburn has subsided, then try again.

The heartburn could also be related to dairy intolerance, but I would only suspect this if you donât otherwise consume much dairy.

Acid Reflux And Medical Intervention

If you have heartburn or acid reflux symptoms on a regular basis, you should seek medical advice. When acid reflux is so regular that it slides into the GERD diagnosis, you are in danger of having some serious complications.

Some complications of GERD can include esophageal cancer, erosion or ulcers in the esophagus, abnormal cell growth , scarring, and tightening of the esophagus.

Its always advisable to speak to a professional before turning to over-the-counter medications or home remedies for the treatment of chronic issues, like repeated heartburn symptoms.

Do Not Eat Too Quickly

If you eat too fast, you might end up eating quicker than the food that can be processed inside your stomach.

This will cause heartburn because the stomach will be trying to produce a lot more acid than usual in order to keep up with your pace. Once the food is digested, the extra acid will rise up your throat and give you that heart-burning sensation.

What Causes Acid Reflux In Vegans

The formal disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease , is the result of having too much stomach acid .

This applies to non-vegans as well, but well look at it from the perspective of a vegan.

There are 2 main reasons vegans might have too much stomach acid:

  • Eating a larger quantity of food
  • Eating certain types of foods that trigger acid production

First Things First: What Is Alkaline Water

All foods and beverages have a pH level. This stands for power of hydrogen, and it measures the concentration of hydrogen ions in a substance. The pH scale ranges from 1 to 14 . Most tap and bottled water has a pH around 7, which is neutral, although it can vary slightly in either direction.

Waters marketed as alkaline have a higher pHusually between 8 and 9. Consumers can also buy ionizing pitchers, or filters that attach to a faucet to make regular tap water alkaline.

In general, anything that is fatty, acidic or highly caffeinated should be avoided. The worst foods for acid reflux list includes:

  • Alcohol This has a double whammy effect. Alcohol relaxes the sphincter valve but it also stimulates acid production in the stomach.
  • Fried foods These are some of the worst foods for reflux. Skip the french fries, onion rings and fried chicken cook on the grill or in the oven at home.

Why Use Coconut Water As Your Smoothie Base

I prefer to use coconut water over all other liquids as a base in my sons smoothie. Many studies suggest that it helps with digestion and reflux. Plus, using it as the liquid base not only adds health benefits, it will also act as a natural sweetener for the smoothies, so you wont have to add any refined sugars.

I usually like to buy Harmless coconut water because it is the purest one in the market. It is really the next best thing to drinking from a coconut. Other less expensive options that I think are good are Zico and 365 Everyday Value from Whole Foods.

You can also alternate and use almond milk, kefir , and/or coconut milk for your smoothie liquid base. At home, coconut water is what my kids like best for their smoothies.
