It is full of fiber and low in fat, with both being healthy for your stomach. Add bananas, which are known to naturally prevent stomach acid.

2. Ginger

Ginger has been used for centuries for stomach ailments. Pregnant women often eat it in lollipop form or drink it as a tea to fight off nausea. It is known for its anti-inflammatory properties as well. The key to ginger is not consuming too much of it. If you go over the recommended dosage of 4 grams, you may trigger heartburn instead of preventing it. You can reap the benefits of ginger by chewing a piece, adding it to your tea or using it in your cooking.

3. Pasta

Foods to eat with GERD include pasta, but tomato or cream sauces are not allowed. Acidic or dairy-based sauces are known to worsen stomach problems. Broth-based sauces are the better choice, as well as whole-wheat pasta instead of regular pasta choices. The increased intake of fiber will help control your symptoms.

4. Beans

You may think beans will worsen your GERD symptoms, but their high fiber and protein content will lessen your discomfort. Since fatty meats and foods spark heartburn and stomach pains, beans are also a good alternate source of protein. You should incorporate the legumes in your diet on a regular basis.

Melon For Heartburn Relief

Melon has a pH of 6.1 and therefore it can be counted as one of the good foods for heartburn. Some people, however, may not respond well to melon and need to avoid it. So you can have some melon pieces every day or make a smoothie with melon and other ingredients that are also good to cure heartburn. Here is one recipe for a melon smoothie that also uses almond milk, cantaloupe, watermelon, ginger and banana. Almonds are also said to be a great remedy for heartburn as they neutralize stomach acid. Why Can Eating Too Fast Trigger Heartburn

When you eat too fast, your stomach has more food to digest at once. This means that its forced to produce more gastric acid than it normally would have.

This acid can then rise up your esophagus and cause heartburn, especially if youre sensitive to acidic foods and prone to heartburn.

Eating too fast often causes stomach discomfort and indigestion. This can force your stomach to work much harder and release more gastric acid. As you can imagine, this acid can then cause heartburn as well.

So, while indigestion isnt closely linked with GERD and acid reflux, it can lead to these issues in the long run.

  • Dilute alcoholic beverages with water or club soda.

What To Eat And What To Avoid For Gerd

Finding a way to add in some of these foods can reduce your symptoms and put you on a path for healing your gut, while eliminating others can stop your symptoms. In some cases, you may be able to limit certain foods, rather than remove them from your diet altogether.

What to eat:

  • Nutrient-dense, whole foods, which will maximize your nutrient intake
  • Fermented foods with probiotic effects like yogurt and kefir or, if you cant tolerate dairy or its too high-carb, raw sauerkraut, pickles, and kombucha
  • Bone broth, which is rich in collagen, gelatin, glutamine, and prolineall helpful for healing the gut

Note:If youre sensitive to FODMAPs, avoid bone broth and collagen.

What to eliminate if you have GERD:

  • Fructose and artificial sweeteners, which can increase bacterial overgrowth and worsen your symptoms
  • Processed foods that include additives, preservatives, and industrial seed oils, which can worsen gut health
  • Alcohol, as it can worsen many gut conditions
  • Drinking water with mealsthis dilutes your stomach acid even more, further hampering your digestion and nutrient absorption

An analysis of the medical literature led by Dr. Jesper Lagergren of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm found that GERD affected about 22 percent of people who were classified as obese, compared with about 14 percent of those who were not obese. After you eat, a muscular sphincter at the bottom of the esophagus opens to let food enter the stomach, and then closes to keep it from reversing direction. An oversized abdomen can put excess pressure on this sphincter and may prevent it from closing when it should, allowing contents from the acidic stomach to leach into the esophagus.
