What Can You Drink When You Have Acid Reflux
I am often asked questions like what drinks help acid reflux or whats the best drink for heartburn? Well whether you have more severe acid reflux or minor acid reflux you should be considering what you are drinking and if it could be making your reflux worse or even brining it on in the first place. People who have more serious acid reflux and have the likes or GERD or LPR should be even more careful with what they are drinking.
There is even more emphasis on someone who has LPR because if you drink something acidic this coming in contact with the throat and can further irritate and annoy symptoms. If you want more information on LPR and how it is caused check out my complete LPR guide here.
First off, I am going to start of with my few suggestions of the things you can drink that will not cause any reflux at all and in fact should help aid symptoms.
Avoid Tight Fitting Clothes
Things cinched tightly about your waist or middle can worsen heartburn. If you have super tight jeans on, when you sit down, the waistband is going to sink into your abdomen region. Same goes for tight belts-and even shirts can be a problem for some. This is because all of the above puts extra pressure on your lower esophageal sphincter, which make it more likely stomach contents, will push through and youll experience reflux.
What Tea To Avoid
While you can sip the above brews to your heart delight, you may want to skip out on some of the other teas if you are struggling with heartburn and acid reflux. Some teas and drinks, in general, can be a trigger point for acid levels to rise which will exacerbate the side effects and even encourage heartburn. The following teas should be consumed with care

Drinks You Should Avoid
Soda is one of the worst things you can consume if you have any form of acid reflux. The main problem with soda is that it is highly acidic. This acidity can often induce the reflux and irritate your throat/esophagus that may have already been damaged by acid. Also, the fact that is it carbonated means more likelihood of belching which is another avenue for acid refluxing up.
As you may have guessed most alcoholic beverages are quite acidic and not only that but some of these beverages like wine for example will encourage more acid production in the stomach which will only heighten the chances of acid reflux, so avoiding alcohol is highly recommended.
Something to note Not all alcoholic drinks are acidic there are a few exceptions to the rule for example some potato based vodkas like Chopin are more alkaline than most waters, also gins tend to be less acidic, for example Greenhook Ginsmiths has a similar pH level to water.
The one thing you have to keep in mind with any alcohol is that the alcohol can make the valve above the stomach weaker which too can lead to acid reflux. The best alcohol for acid reflux are as I mentioned vodka and gin whereas most of the other alcohols like bear, wine etc all tend to be very acidic. If you have more serious acid reflux it would be wise to avoid all alochol until your symptoms have lessened or resolved and after that point you could consider the like of gin and vodka.
Drinks with Caffeine
Best Foods For Acid Reflux
A diet balanced with vegetables, protein and fruits is best, Dr. Khaitan says. Examples of the best foods for acid reflux include:
- Chicken breast Be sure to remove the fatty skin. Skip fried and instead choose baked, broiled or grilled.
- Lettuce, celery and sweet peppers These mild green veggies are easy on the stomach and wont cause painful gas.
- Brown rice This complex carbohydrate is mild and filling just dont serve it fried.
- Melons Watermelon, cantaloupe and honeydew are all low-acid fruits that are among the best foods for acid reflux.
- Oatmeal Filling, hearty and healthy, this comforting breakfast standard also works for lunch.
- Fennel This low-acid crunchy vegetable has a mild licorice flavor and a natural soothing effect.
- Ginger Steep caffeine-free ginger tea or chew on low-sugar dried ginger for a natural tummy tamer.

Is It Just Heartburn Or Gerd

- Pain relievers such as ibuprofen, acetaminophen and aspirin
Other medications such as alpha-blockers and calcium channel blockers can also make symptoms worse. If you suspect that one of your medications is the reason for your GERD symptoms, talk to your doctor before stopping your medication.

How To Use Baking Soda For Heartburn
Sodium bicarbonate has an alkaline pH, which helps to neutralize the acidity in your stomach. Usually, a half teaspoon of baking soda mixed in a 4-ounce glass of water is enough to help relieve your heartburn symptoms.
You can try this method every four hours or as directed by a healthcare provider, but if this doesnât help after three or four tries, you may want to try another treatment method. If you regularly use this method for two weeks, but still have symptoms, it may signal a larger problem that needs to be checked out.
If you donât like the taste of baking soda or donât want to measure an exact amount of baking soda , then you might want to consider using Alka-Seltzer. This common brand-name over-the-counter medication contains sodium bicarbonate, and it contains flavorings that make the drink more palatable.
If the baking soda is providing you with temporary relief, but you are seeking a longer or more potent effect, you may want to consider Zegerid for more long-lasting relief.
Adjust Your Sleep Position
Elevating your head and chest higher than your feet as you sleep can help prevent and ease acid reflux and heartburn. You can do this using a foam wedge placed under the mattress or by raising bedposts using wood blocks. Beware of piling pillows, as this usually isn’t effective and may even make your symptoms worse. Additionally, sleeping on your left side is thought to aid digestion and may work to limit stomach acid reflux.

For mild, occasional heartburn, over-the-counter medications such as antacids and histamine blockers can help relieve symptoms. Always read the product label before taking an antacid or histamine blocker and never take a larger dose or take doses more frequently than directed.
If you’re experiencing heartburn frequently, consult your doctor before taking heartburn medications regularly since these drugs can interfere with many other medications and affect underlying health conditions you may have.
If you have severe heartburn, as well as if it persists or worsens after taking steps to relieve it, consult your doctor. In some cases, heartburn can be a sign of an underlying condition, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease , or possibly a side effect of a medication you’re taking.
What Lifestyle Changes Help Heartburn
The best way to avoid heartburn discomfort is to prevent it. These lifestyle changes can make a big difference:
- Avoid trigger foods: Foods that promote heartburn include fried and fatty foods, caffeine, chocolate, spicy foods and carbonated beverages.
- Lose weight: Being overweight increases the likelihood that you’ll experience heartburn.
- Avoid eating late at night: Try to eat three hours before going to bed. At a minimum, you should wait at least one hour after eating.
- Elevate the bed: Physically lift the head of your bed about six to eight inches so you’re sleeping on an incline. If that’s not possible, use a wedge pillow for lift.
- Avoid alcohol and tobacco: These substances increase the chances of heartburn attacks.

Dark Circles Under The Eyes
Dont be fooled into thinking that dark circles beneath the eyes are caused by a lack of sleep or fatigue. It turns out that not properly digesting meat can cause problems with your cosmetic routine. Its a symptom that the meat wasnt digested if you get them frequently .
Meat particles slip past the gut wall and into the bloodstream undigested, and they are considered as foreign invaders because of the damaged gut lining.
