Elevate Your Upper Body
Lying down can make heartburn worse. When it comes time for bed, adjust your sleeping surface to raise your upper body.
According to the Mayo Clinic, lifting your head with extra pillows isnt usually enough. Instead, the goal is to elevate your body from the waist up.
If you have an adjustable bed, set it at a suitable angle to provide relief. If your bed isnt adjustable, you can change the angle of your sleeping surface by using a wedge pillow.
C Make All The Necessary Lifestyle Changes
There are many things you can do besides maintaining a healthy BMI and following a GERD friendly diet. Here is a short list of recommendations you should consider:
- Avoid alcohol
- If you smoke, stop immediately
- Leave at least 3 hours between your final meal and bedtime
- Wear loose-fitting clothes
- Drink plenty of water
- Walk for 20 minutes after a major meal to aid digestion
- Try eating 5 or 6 small meals daily

Acid Reflux Is Common But Not Inevitable Heres How To Douse The Fire Before It Flares
Most people get heartburn once in a whilethat achy, burning sensation in your chest after a big meal that kind of feels like youre breathing fire.
Also known as acid reflux, other symptoms may include pressure, tightness, or even a feeling of regurgitation of material from your stomach up through your esophagus, explains David Levinthal, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Neurogastroenterology and Motility Center at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
That regurgitation feeling makes sense: Reflux is essentially stomach juice moving from the stomach up into the esophagus or further up.
The unwanted backflow happens for a few reasons. Sometimes, taking certain medications can cause the valve that links your stomach and esophagus to malfunction, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. When this happens, the stomach contents can migrate into the esophagus, where they dont belong, Dr. Levinthal explains.
You can also experience reflux if theres a difference in pressure between your stomach and your esophagus. Fluid or material is always going to move from the high-pressure zone to a low-pressure zone, he says. Being overweight or obese can cause this abdominal pressure.

Lose The Extra Pounds
Shedding those extra kilos not only makes you look good on the outside, it also actually reduces the chances of getting a heartburn. Fat in the abdomen can put pressure on a full stomach inciting an acid reflux into the oesophagus much easier. Experts say that as little as 10 percent in weight loss can significantly reduce the chances of getting heartburn symptoms.
Eat Long Enough Before Bed
One cause of heartburn is eating too closely to bed time. When you eat a meal and then lie down quickly afterward, the sphincter muscle can relax and fall open. This can make it easier for stomach acid to get into the esophagus and heartburn to occur.
To avoid heartburn, be sure to eat at least two to three hours before bed time. This waiting period gives your body enough time to digest your food and get it out of your stomach. That way the amount of stomach acid in your stomach will be minimized and heartburn will less likely occur.
If your schedule is such that its hard to eat that far away from bed time, consider eating very small meals before bed. And make sure those meals are healthy, whole foods meals.
This can help at least minimize the potential of heartburn even if you do eat close to bed time.

Sleep On Your Left Side
Sleeping on your left side may help put out the heartburn fire since it can allow fluid and materials to pool farther away from the esophagus areamaking them less likely to rise up through it, Dr. Levinthal says.
Science agrees. A 2015 study published in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology found that when people slept on their left side with a sleep device that safely elevated their head and neck, they had less esophageal acid exposure than those who snoozed on their right side.
Still, take this recommendation with a grain of salt, Dr. Levinthal says. While it likely can provide a small benefit, if youre set in your sleeping ways, the disruption to your shut-eye caused by forcing a new position may outweigh it.
A Maintain A Healthy Body Weight
Do you know your body mass index ? If not, start now by entering your weight and height into a BMI calculator to use the NIH calculator and find your current BMI.
A healthy BMI is between 19 and 25, but anyone with a compromised LES should not be at the high end of normal. We recommend a BMI of 24 or less. Why is this important? We wrote a cornerstone article titled How is your excess weight destroying your LES , which we highly recommend you read if you have a BMI greater than 24.
This excess weight does two things that will increase your GERD symptoms. First, it distends the stomach, pulling down on the LES and stretching it out. Over a long-term, this will reduce the effectiveness of the LES to act as an effective barrier between the stomach and the oesophagus.
Second, it puts added pressure on the diaphragm, potentially pushing stomach content into the esophagus. Many research studies have proven that a reduction in BMI will reduce GERD symptoms. In an NIH published paper researchers concluded the following:
In summary, our findings suggest that, beyond being overweight or obese, the risk of GERD symptoms rises progressively with increasing BMI, even among normal weight individuals. This appears true for all degrees of symptom severity and duration, as well as for nocturnal symptoms. Notably, weight loss was associated with a decreased risk of symptoms.

Is It Just Heartburn Or Gerd
Frequent heartburn can be a major issue. If you experience heartburn two or more times a week, you may have gastroesophageal reflux disease .
In this chronic condition, frequent exposure to stomach acid irritates and damages the esophagus. Over time, that can lead to problems such as difficulty swallowing. An estimated 40 percent of Americans report symptoms of GERD but the condition can significantly improve with lifestyle changes.
If you’ve tried home remedies and lifestyle adjustments and still have frequent heartburn, consult with your family doctor or a gastroenterologist. There are multiple treatments that can help, including medications and minimally invasive surgery for acid reflux.
Try A Spoonful Of Apple Cider Vinegar
While research is limited, some of Dr. Levinthals patients swear by the home remedy of apple cider vinegar as a way to reduce heartburn. They take as little as one tablespoon and report feeling an improvement.
It makes sense: Stomach acid is a pretty strong acid, with a pH level of about 2, Dr. Levinthal says. Apple cider vinegar, on the other hand, is a weaker acid, with a pH of about 4.5 or 5.
Whenever you mix a weak acid with a stronger acid, it kind of has a buffering capacity, he says.
You shouldnt expect a miracle cure, but theres no danger in giving it a shot, Dr. Levinthal says.

How To Get Rid Of Heartburn An Instant Home Remedy
I was up Googling how to get rid of heartburn in the middle of the night a few years ago and came across this. If you find yourself in the exact same position this holiday season this is the instant cure I found.
Ive had gut issues for as long as I can remember. I dont think I stress about stuff or get tense, but my stomach thinks otherwise. My stomach thinks I stress out A LOT and it, being the extremely thoughtful organ that it is, gets angry for me. Angry like a nest of wasps made out of acid. So my stomach takes care of all the stress and anxiety I feel, without having to bother my pretty little head about it.
Ill believe in my mind that Im moving along fine in life not being bothered by a thing when my stomach will start to tighten up. Then Ill feel a bit bloaty maybe. Then Ill notice my stomach is tightening, hard as a rock and ballooning to approximately the same size as a Water Buffalo. You know how when a country thinks conditions are unsafe and its under attack, itll go into lockdown? My gut goes into lockdown. Like North Korea.
I used to think I had some type of rare and special disease but as it turns out .. I have gas. Gas in itself isnt all that bad. Especially if you make your living by belching the alphabet . Its when you cant get the hell rid of the gas. When it just builds up and builds up inside your tiny little locked down stomach.
And then I burp and everything is fine with the world.
Baking Soda For Heartburn
One of the original home remedies for indigestion is baking soda mixed in water. The reason it has stood the test of time? It works! Baking soda is a base that offsets the acidity in your esophagus and your gut, says , a dietician at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. For fast relief, try mixing a half to one teaspoon of baking soda in eight ounces of water.
Dont overdo it, though: Too much baking soda can have negative health effects, including nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. If you are pregnant or have a chronic condition like heart disease, high blood pressure or kidney disease, speak with your doctor before trying this home remedy.
