Are There Any Tests For Heartburn

Reduce your Acid Reflux / Heartburn in just 3 Minutes!

If it is obvious from the symptoms that a person has heartburn, no tests or exams may be necessary. Advice in regard to lifestyle modifications, diet, or medications may begin immediately.

If your health care professional is not sure about the diagnosis, or if he or she is concerned about damage done by chronic heartburn, tests may be ordered. This is true especially if the patient has already been prescribed medications that are not relieving the heartburn.

There is no simple blood test for heartburn. The tests used to diagnose heartburn include the following:

What Is Happening: Waking Up Choking At Night While Sleeping

These kinds of episodes are quite frightening. When this happened to me I would violently be awoken and have trouble breathing. Breathing became painful, sometimes for days, and its quite possible some content went into the mouth and lungs. Many times my heart started to race and I got sweaty.

When the above happened the acid and stomach content can cause Acid Reflux induced asthma. When acid goes in your mouth it splashes on your teeth and can cause damage to them. The worst thing you could do for your teeth are brush them right away. My dentist told me that he could see the signs of Acid Reflux on his patients teeth. He also told me to rinse my mouth and wait a while, rinse again and then brush the same goes for acidic foods.

The things you could do before going to bed:

Is all the life style changes, from losing weight, to staying away from offending foods such as acidic foods, fatty foods, caffeine, chocolate, carbonated drinks, etc. these are the hard thing to do, it takes planning and discipline.

Reasons why these life style changes help:

Many of these foods relax the sphincter muscles or add gas to your stomach increasing upward pressure and/or therefore requiring less pressure for acid and Stomach content to get into the esophagus.

Try Baking Soda And Lemon Water

Another natural way to cure heartburn quickly is to make a mixture of baking soda and lemon with water.

  • Mix half a teaspoon of baking soda and a few drops of lemon juice in a warm cup of water
  • Drink it
  • Lemons contain limonene which dilutes the acid in your stomach. The bicarbonates in baking soda will also reduce the action of acid. Alternatively you can skip the baking soda and just squeeze lemon juice into a warm water and drink. The baking soda just gives it some extra punch.

If you are consistently getting Heartburn, you should see a doctor at once. If all these tips on getting rid of heartburn fail, a more aggressive treatment may be needed.

A Maintain A Healthy Body Weight

Do you know your body mass index ? If not, start now by entering your weight and height into a BMI calculator to use the NIH calculator and find your current BMI.

A healthy BMI is between 19 and 25, but anyone with a compromised LES should not be at the high end of normal. We recommend a BMI of 24 or less. Why is this important? We wrote a cornerstone article titled How is your excess weight destroying your LES , which we highly recommend you read if you have a BMI greater than 24.

This excess weight does two things that will increase your GERD symptoms. First, it distends the stomach, pulling down on the LES and stretching it out. Over a long-term, this will reduce the effectiveness of the LES to act as an effective barrier between the stomach and the oesophagus.

Second, it puts added pressure on the diaphragm, potentially pushing stomach content into the esophagus. Many research studies have proven that a reduction in BMI will reduce GERD symptoms. In an NIH published paper researchers concluded the following:

In summary, our findings suggest that, beyond being overweight or obese, the risk of GERD symptoms rises progressively with increasing BMI, even among normal weight individuals. This appears true for all degrees of symptom severity and duration, as well as for nocturnal symptoms. Notably, weight loss was associated with a decreased risk of symptoms.

What Are My Options If These Treatments Don’t Work

If a person continues to have heartburn, a health care professional may recommend adding a drug such as metoclopramide . This drug empties food and acid quickly from the stomach so less can back up into the esophagus. Reglan also helps tighten the lower esophageal sphincter.

If a person still have symptoms, a health care professional will then recommend one of the drugs called proton pump inhibitors. Examples of these drugs are omeprazole , lansoprazole , esomeprazole , rabeprazole , and pantoprazole . These tablets prevent the stomach from secreting acid. They are very effective and are typically taken only once a day. These drugs usually are prescribed if other drugs have not helped. They may have to be used indefinitely.

Although the power of essential oils to ease heartburn lacks scientific data, that hasnt stopped people from touting its benefits. Edible essential oils most commonly used for heartburn include lavender, lemon, ginger and orange. Add a drop or two to hot tea or water. Not all heartburn-friendly essential oils are ingestible. Eucalyptus essential oil may be used in a diffuser or in bath water instead. While the jury is still out on how effective these oils are for solving heartburn, there are studies that indicate they can help with issues like stress and anxiety, so there is little downside to giving them a try.

    When To See A Doctor

Treating heartburn involves more than just popping a pill or munching on a fistful of antacids. These medications work in tandem with lifestyle changes such as cutting out caffeine consuming smaller, more frequent meals quitting smoking and avoiding alcohol, a known heartburn trigger. Other tips that may help extinguish heartburn include not eating after 7 p.m. and propping your head up while you sleep. “You can’t expect a pill to work if you are drinking eight cups of coffee and smoking two packs a day,” Dr. Chutkan says.

Caffeine relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter, a circular muscle that creates a valve between the esophagus and the stomach. Think of the muscle as a door. “When the door is shut, no acid comes back up. But when the door opens, the acid backs up from stomach to food pipe,” Dr. Cappell says. “Caffeine, smoking, and alcohol all tend to make reflux more severe, and they may act by opening this door.”

“If you have classic acid reflux or heartburn such as a pain in chest with frequent burping or nausea, it’s OK to try over-the-counter remediesespecially if it occurs after a large, fatty meal or late at night,” Dr. Chutkan says. Steer clear of the over-the-counter aisle and head straight to your doctor if you have any of these red flags: pain or difficulty swallowing, vomiting, unexplained weight loss, or persistent abdominal pain, she says.

    What Causes Heartburn At Night

There are several triggers that may cause heartburn during the day. Nighttime heartburn often occurs while lying down too soon after eating. Lying flat can push acid from the stomach up into the lower esophagus, making it harder for food to properly digest. This can cause a burning sensation in your chest, known as heartburn.

Antacids H2 Blockers Ppis Our Pharmacists Explain The Options

Fortunately, pharmacies stock plenty of safe, effective remedies so many, in fact, that it can be confusing trying to figure out which one is right for you. So, we asked some pharmacists for help. Heres a rundown on the three classes of heartburn remedies, courtesy of The Portland Clinic pharmacy team.

    Antacids

Antacids such as Tums, Rolaids, Maalox and Mylanta are the fastest-acting heartburn relievers. They take effect in less than five minutes by quickly neutralizing acid in the stomach. For mild heartburn after a meal, antacids offer quick relief that lasts about 20-30 minutes. They come in a variety of strengths, so check labels for dosing information. In general, you shouldnt use antacids more than four times a day. If you find yourself reaching for them frequently, it might be time to try a different one or to switch to one of the stronger remedies.

    H2 blockers

Pepcid, Tagamet and Zantac are some of the more well-known H2 blockers, so called because they block a chemical called histamine that prompts the stomach to make acid. They take longer than antacids to bring relief about 30-45 minutes but the relief lasts 4-10 hours. H2 blockers can be used to relieve mild or moderate heartburn, or to prevent it when you anticipate heartburn . You also can combine H2 blockers with antacids for quicker relief. Just dont take H2 blockers more than twice a day, or for more than two weeks if you use them regularly.

How Do Antacids Work To Treat Heartburn

Antacids reduce the amount of stomach acid, relieving your heartburn. These medications can also be used to soothe stomach upset, indigestion and other pains in your stomach. Some antacids contain simethicone, which reduces gas. Antacids that you can get without a prescription include:

    • Tums®.
    • Maalox®.
    • Gaviscon®.

Make sure you always follow the instructions on the package or talk to your doctor about the right way to use an antacid. If you use tablets, chew them well before swallowing for faster relief.

    How Is Heartburn Treated

In most cases, heartburn can be treated at home with over-the-counter medications and changes to lifestyle habits that cause the feeling. Occasional heartburn is common and is typically not serious. However, if you have frequent and severe heartburn, reach out to your healthcare provider. This could be a sign of a chronic condition like GERD. GERD can lead to other serious conditions like esophagitis, Barretts esophagus and even cancer. Sometimes, your doctor may want to do an endoscopy to check for underlying medication conditions. An endoscopy is the examination of your digestive tract with a lighted flexible instrument.

Over-the-counter medications for heartburn typically include antacids and acid blockers.

If youve been struggling with acid reflux for any length of time, then you know there isnt a quick fix to this disease as a whole. GERD has many symptoms, one of which is heartburn. The fiery feeling of heartburn is the last way you want to remember a great meal. But when your doctor says you have chronic heartburn caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease , you may worry that a bland and disappointing menu is in your future. “That may not be true,” says Dr. Kyle Staller, a gastroenterologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. “The foods that trigger heartburn are different for everyone.” He suggests keeping a journal to determine which foods cause symptoms.

    Common culprits

Some foods and ingredients may intensify heartburn, such as spicy foods, citrus, tomato sauces, and vinegar.

Fatty and fried foods linger longer in the stomach. That may increase stomach pressure and force open the muscles that keep stomach acid out of the esophagus.

Other common heartburn triggers include chocolate, caffeine, onions, peppermint, carbonated drinks, and alcohol.

Antacids Are A Helpful Heartburn Remedy

Over-the-counter digestive aids are generally effective and safe. One would hope so Americans pay billions of dollars a year for these medications. The antacids that got the highest marks from our experts are many of the most common brandsall are made from a mixture of magnesium hydroxide and aluminum hydroxide. Although the mix may be relatively free of side effects, it still is not a good idea to stay on these antacids for more than a month or possibly two, says Kleckner. They are so effective that they could mask a serious problem that requires a physicians care, he says. Our experts agree that liquid antacids, although not as convenient as tablets, are generally more effective.
