What To Eat When You Get Heartburn

What Causes Heartburn And What Does It Feel Like Exactly

Heartburn | How To Get Rid of Heartburn and Acid Reflux FAST!

Stomach acid is needed to break down the food you eat, something your stomach has no trouble handling. Your esophagus, on the other hand, is irritated by it.

To keep stomach acid in your stomach and out of your esophagus, a circular ring of muscle at the tubes base, called the lower esophageal sphincter, acts as a valve. When this valve is relaxed, food youve consumed is allowed to pass through to your stomach. When contracted, this valve prevents this food and acid from backing up into your esophagus.

If this valve relaxes abnormally and stomach acid is allowed to travel back into your esophagus, acid reflux occurs. Heartburn is the most well-known and obvious symptom.

It can feel differently depending on its severity, but heartburn symptoms include:

  • A burning sensation in your chest, behind your breastbone
  • Burning pain that rises up toward your throat
  • Having a bitter or sour taste in your mouth

Acid reflux and heartburn are sometimes caused by an underlying medical condition, or even a medication youre taking in some cases. But, more often than not, theyre triggered by things like your diet and lifestyle choices making the occasional bout of heartburn fairly common.

Common triggers of heartburn include:

  • Overeating or eating too quickly
  • Lying down too soon after eating
  • Consuming certain foods, including caffeine, carbonated beverages, alcohol, peppermint, citrus, tomato-based products, chocolate and fatty or spicy foods
  • Being overweight

Tests And Surgery For Heartburn And Acid Reflux

If medicines do not help or your symptoms are severe, a GP may refer you to a specialist for:

  • tests to find out what’s causing your symptoms, such as a gastroscopy
  • an operation on your stomach to stop acid reflux called a laparoscopic fundoplication

Is There Surgery To Treat Gerd

GERD is usually controlled with medications and lifestyle changes . If these dont work, or if you cant take medications for an extended period, surgery may be a solution.

  • Laparoscopic antireflux surgery is the standard surgical treatment. Its a minimally invasive procedure that fixes your acid reflux by creating a new valve mechanism at the bottom of your esophagus. The surgeon wraps the upper part of the stomach around the lower portion of the esophagus. This reinforces the lower esophageal sphincter so food wont reflux back into the esophagus.
  • LINX deviceimplantation is another minimally invasive surgery. A LINX device is a ring of tiny magnets that are strong enough to keep the junction between the stomach and esophagus closed to refluxing acid but weak enough to allow food to pass through.

Consuming Aloe Vera Can Sometimes Help Reduce Symptoms Of Acid Reflux

Aloe vera might be known for being a key ingredient in creams meant to soothe sunburns, but it can also be useful for reducing the symptoms of acid reflux, including heartburn.

“Aloe vera is famous as a natural healing agent and also appears to reduce gastric acid levels naturally. It is available as a living plant but the leaves or liquid form are sometimes sold separately in grocery and health food stores,” bariatric surgeonDr. Michael Jay Nusbaum told INSIDER. He also said the liquid form of aloe can be used as a thickening agent when preparing certain dishes.

Liquid aloe vera can have a slightly sour taste, so you may want to add a drizzle of honey if you plan to consume it undiluted. And if you want your aloe vera to be as fresh as possible, you can keep a live plant in your home and remove its leaves as needed.

Symptoms of GERD

Just about everyone has had heartburn that uncomfortable burning feeling in the chest after eating a heavy meal at some point in their life. Fresh ginger is another excellent remedy for fighting heartburn problems and can be used in so many different foods and beverages that you can easily take on-the-go when you need it. For example, you can bring slices of ginger with you so you can chew on a piece when your heartburn flares up, you can steep it in hot water to make a form of tea, or you can use it generously in your cooking to get a dose of this wonderful ingredient. You can also enjoy pastas, which are high in fiber and low in fat, however, you will want to pass on the red sauce as tomatoes will only cause your heartburn to flare up again. However, if you are wondering how you are going to avoid red sauce on things like pizza and pasta, you can always ask for a broth sauce or the use of olive oil instead, to lessen your heartburn related problems. These foods for heartburn are not only healthier for you but will help you to treat heartburn and many other ailments as well.

The fiery feeling of heartburn is the last way you want to remember a great meal. But when your doctor says you have chronic heartburn caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease , you may worry that a bland and disappointing menu is in your future. “That may not be true,” says Dr. Kyle Staller, a gastroenterologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. “The foods that trigger heartburn are different for everyone.” He suggests keeping a journal to determine which foods cause symptoms.

Common culprits

Some foods and ingredients may intensify heartburn, such as spicy foods, citrus, tomato sauces, and vinegar.

Fatty and fried foods linger longer in the stomach. That may increase stomach pressure and force open the muscles that keep stomach acid out of the esophagus.

Other common heartburn triggers include chocolate, caffeine, onions, peppermint, carbonated drinks, and alcohol.
