Can Gerd Go Away Forever

There are several treatment options for GERD, but is there a cure? It is possible to eliminate GERD with diet modification , but the diet will have to be maintained in order to prevent recurrence of symptoms, Dr. Lopez says. Because there is usually an anatomical reason for GERD, if the diet is not maintained, GERD symptoms will likely recur. Also, some individuals require both diet modification and initiation of medication. Just like most disease processes, GERD is a spectrum. Thus, different individuals usually require different treatments in order to improve or eliminate their symptoms.

Unfortunately, theres no quick fix for GERD. Figuring out how to reduce or eliminate symptoms can sometimes be a game of trial and error. First, try the least invasive technique, diet change, and go from there.

Is There Surgery To Treat Gerd

GERD is usually controlled with medications and lifestyle changes . If these dont work, or if you cant take medications for an extended period, surgery may be a solution.

  • Laparoscopic antireflux surgery is the standard surgical treatment. Its a minimally invasive procedure that fixes your acid reflux by creating a new valve mechanism at the bottom of your esophagus. The surgeon wraps the upper part of the stomach around the lower portion of the esophagus. This reinforces the lower esophageal sphincter so food wont reflux back into the esophagus.
  • LINX deviceimplantation is another minimally invasive surgery. A LINX device is a ring of tiny magnets that are strong enough to keep the junction between the stomach and esophagus closed to refluxing acid but weak enough to allow food to pass through.

What Else Causes Gerd Symptoms

As you might have noticed the common factor through most of the above foods is how they make symptoms worse. Most cause a combination of either relaxing the LES, increasing stomach acid production or keeping the stomach full for too long. The above foods are not the only foods and drinks that can aggravate GERD symptoms. Additional items include the following:

  • Alcohol
  • Pain relievers such as ibuprofen, acetaminophen and aspirin
  • Antibiotics

Other medications such as alpha-blockers and calcium channel blockers can also make symptoms worse. If you suspect that one of your medications is the reason for your GERD symptoms, talk to your doctor before stopping your medication.

Foods That Help Heartburn And Indigestion Relief:

1. Egg Whites: They are an excellent supply of protein and are low in acid. Simply skim the yolk, thats more prone to cause the symptoms.

2. Rice and Couscous: These healthy complex carbs are excellent for those who have reflux. When selecting rice, go for brown rice that contain more fiber.

3. Parsley: For tens of thousands of years, parsley was utilized as a medicinal herb to settle the stomach and help digestion. Level-leaf and curly parsley are broadly accessible, plus thousands of years make an excellent garnish and seasoning.

4. Celery: Wild Celery has practically no calories due to its high water content, and is an excellent option for those who have acid reflux. Its also an appetite suppressant and superior supply of roughage.

5. Fennel: The fennel is an excellent food for acid reflux and really appears to enhance gut function. This vegetable has a special tastea light licorice flavor.
