Neuroplasticity is a relatively new scientific concept that our neurological tissues has some ability to recover function from at least mild levels of insult or damage. Neuroplasticity means nervous tissue that has the ability to regain its function after being altered just as plastic regains it shape after being bent.
After a stroke, patients have the ability to regain some neurological function. After a nerve or the spinal column is damaged by an injury, remarkable degrees of recovery have been known to occur. The recovery in these cases may not be complete in severe cases but can often be complete with mild injuries to the nervous system.
After the Autonomic Nervous System is damaged, it too shows a remarkable ability to recover from the toxic effects of excessive carbohydrates. I have many patients who have completely recovered from the neurological damage that causes heartburn, erectile dysfunction, lightheadedness and urinary disturbances after reducing their carbohydrate intake.
One exception to neuroplasticity of the ANS is in patients with long standing type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. In this circumstance, the nerves have been severely damaged by the toxic effects of excessively high blood sugar and insulin levels as well as the damaging effects of inflammation associated with insulin resistance. Fortunately, most patients who have worked at controlling their diabetes still have a good chance of reversing the their ANS dysfunction.
Heartburn And Back Pain At Night
Nighttime heartburn is one of the most important symptoms for people who suffer from reflux.
More than this, its one of the most significant causes of deteriorating quality of life.
Heartburn with back pain during the night might be a sign of different conditions.
They vary from the simple bad sleeping position to more concerning health issues and many more.
However, heartburn at night is not related to back pain.

Lower Esophageal Sphincter Problem
The thing that basically always plays an important factor in heartburn and GERD is the lower esophageal sphincter . If you didnt know the LES is the valve above the stomach which is designed to open when you eat and drink. When you are not eating or drinking the LES is meant to close over to keep the acid inside the stomach as its meant to be.
The problems arise when the LES doesnt close. There are a lot of potential reasons that they LES might not close properly. Though if it doesnt close properly this is what can lead to the heartburn, indigestion, and chest pain even when you havent eaten.
There are countless things that can cause the LES to malfunction, its uncommon to be solely related to a direct LES malfunction. This is because it has often been caused by another factor like the diet and medication I mentioned already.
To mention another couple of reasons the LES can malfunction one is simply overeating. When I say overeating, I mean eating too much in one sitting.
Basically, when you eat too much like this puts more pressure on the stomach and this can lead to LES opening up due to this increased pressure. This repeated process over several years can weaken the LES over time which then can sometimes lead to the LES malfunctioning and not closing properly as it should.
This in turn leads to heartburn and acid reflux symptoms. Sometimes for certain people simply loosing some weight around this area can completely stop heartburn and acid reflux symptoms.

How Does The Intestinal Tract Normally Function
Throughout the day and night, we constantly produce stomach acid. We produce even more when we eat a meal. Stomach acid is required to assist in digesting food, killing potentially harmful bacterial and is also helpful in activating various digestive enzymes.
Think of your intestinal tract as a conveyor belt that constantly pushes our intestinal contents forward throughout the day. Our esophagus pushes food into the stomach, the stomach pushes stomach acid and partially digested food into the small intestine, the small intestine absorbs ours nutrients and pushes the non-absorbable material into the colon and the colon pushes material to the rectum.
This conveyor belt action of the intestinal tract is primarily under the control of neurological network referred to as the Autonomic Nervous System . Eating Habits And Food Choices
No shock here, but the kinds of food you eat, along with when you eat them can make a world of difference when it comes to heartburn
“Higher fat and higher fiber foods are more often associated with exercise-related heartburn,” says Machowsky. Although fiber is very good for you, it digests slowly, and if you eat a high-fiber meal too soon before a workout, you can become constipated, putting too much pressure on the LES. “Caffeine, chocolate, spicy foods, mint, or any other foods classically associated with GERD, could add to it as well,” he says.
His general eating strategy for a smooth and efficient workout? “Make sure you’re giving yourself adequate time to digest,” he says. “Try to avoid eating significant amounts of food at least two hours before training, especially if you’re susceptible to heartburn already.” Also, pay attention to carb intake, as unless you’re gearing up for a very long workout or an endurance race, you don’t need to carb-o-load. Doing so will only back up the flow of digestion.
Quite Often I Hear My Patients Say That They Dont Understand How I Can Tell Them They Have Acid Reflux Disease Because They Don’t Have A Complaint Of Heartburn In Fact Many Of My Patients Initially Simply Do Not Believe They Have Acid Reflux Disease At All The Symptoms They Do Have When They Come In To See Me Are Some Combination Of Cough Hoarseness Frequent Throat Clearing Excess Phlegm In Their Throat Post Nasal Drip And/or Difficulty Swallowing In Other Words Their Symptoms Are Not About Heartburn Rather They Are About Throat Burn
Quite often I hear my patients say that they dont understand how I can tell them they have acid reflux disease because they don’t have a complaint of heartburn. In fact, many of my patients initially simply do not believe they have acid reflux disease at all. The symptoms they do have when they come in to see me are some combination of cough , hoarseness , frequent throat clearing , excess phlegm in their throat , post nasal drip and/or difficulty swallowing . In other words, their symptoms are not about heartburn, rather they are about “throat burn.”
What is even more confusing to my patients is that these throat symptoms are usually treated with antacid medications that are the same as traditional heartburn medications like Nexium, Prilosec, Prevacid, Aciphex, Protonix, Kapidex or Zegerid. Or another class of antacid medications such as Zantac or Pepcid.
So what’s going on here? Whats going on is that there are 2 related diseases taking place here, GastroEsophageal Reflux Disease and LaryngoPharyngeal Reflux Disease . In both diseases, acid from the stomach is refluxing back up into either the esophagus, attached to the stomach from above, or all the way back into the throat, which sits on top of the esophagus.
How do we treat this acid induced swelling of the throat? The treatment consists of being careful with the intake of 4 of your favorite food groups: caffeine, chocolate, alcohol and mint. In addition, antacid medications are often used as well.
