The terms heartburn, acid reflux, and GERD are often used interchangeably. They actually have very different meanings.

Don’t Lie Flat When You Sleep

When you lie flat your stomach contents press against the LES. Keeping your head higher than your stomach helps reduce this pressure.

You can elevate your head in a couple of ways:

  • Place bricks, blocks, or something sturdy and secure under the legs at the head of your bed.
  • Use a wedge-shaped GERD pillow under your head and shoulders.

With GERD when reflux and heartburn happen more than once in a while the tissue lining your esophagus is getting battered regularly with stomach acid. Eventually the tissue becomes damaged.     Unfortunately, heartburn is a symptom you’re likely to experience throughout your entire pregnancy if you have it at all.

    In fact, even if you escaped indigestion early on in your pregnancy, there’s a good chance you’ll have a surge starting around the second or third trimesters, when your uterus takes over your abdominal cavity and forces your stomach upwards.

    A big player in the cause of acid reflux is overcaffeination.     People who are overweight or obese are more likely to suffer, Eisen says, noting that some people think only obesity raises heartburn risk. He also points out that pregnant women can suffer heartburn. He says thatâs probably because elevated levels of the hormone progesterone cause a temporary weakness in the LES.

    Coffee And Caffeinated Beverages

    Some people may experience heartburn when drinking coffee and other caffeinated beverages.

    This is because caffeine has been shown to relax the lower esophageal sphincter, which can increase the risk of acid reflux and heartburn (

    17 ).

    Even though coffee may cause heartburn in some people, not all studies have observed a link between coffee and acid reflux symptoms.

    One study that included 1,837 people, 25% of whom had GERD, did not find a significant link between coffee consumption and GERD symptoms .

    Though the research remains inconclusive, if you tolerate coffee, theres no need to avoid it. On the other hand, if coffee gives you reflux and heartburn, its best to avoid it or limit your intake.

    Can Gerd Cause Asthma

    Overloads Hacks & Tricks
