Todays article divulges if drinking water dilutes stomach acid, a common question by those aiming to optimize digestive health.

Lets explore why this myth became popular and what the current research has to say about it. I use the mythbuster-scaling system of totally true, a little bit true, or not true at all.

Does The Ph Level Of Your Bottled Water Really Matter

CHARLOTTE, N.C. You can find cases of bottled water stacked on the shelves in your local grocery store and in recent years some new kinds making all types of health claims have come onto the market.

But can water really help you avoid stomach issues, even cancer?

From the keto diet to intermittent fasting to even the J. Lo challenge, theres always some new buzzed-about way to get healthy.

“This is a big trend right now,” says David Loman, a nutrition coach at Lifetime Athletic. Hes talking about water, more specifically bottled water, even more specifically, water with different pH levels.

“Your body is naturally at 7.4 so it doesnt make any sense to drink anything outside that range,” Loman said.

But some claim water with higher alkaline levels can help with heartburn, prevent cancer and slow the aging process.

Connor Gregg insists it’s helping him.

“For the last two years Ive been drinking alkaline water regularly, and I can easily tell the difference. Once I started drinking high pH water, my acid reflux went away,” he said.

“It’s hard to say that water is responsible for it because thats a very small change,” said Brian Cooper, chemistry professor at UNC Charlotte.

We worked with him to see the science behind it all and test it. Cooper mixed chemicals together, creating what is essentially stomach acid, then mixed it with the different waters to see the interaction.

Loman said he just wants everyone to drink more water. Period.

Drinking Lemon Water Safely

Wondering how to get the benefits of lemon, but without running into any of the potential problems?

“I suggest drinking a glass of lemon water first thing in the morning and using warm water to get more of the nutrients into the water,” Escobar says. Additional glasses are fine during the day, she adds, but be mindful of the potential effects on dental health.

To protect your teeth, the ADA suggests drinking lemon water with meals and perhaps using a straw. At the very least, do not swish or hold lemon water in your mouth longer than you need to. Just sip and swallow instead.

Another way to help reduce enamel erosion is by rinsing your mouth with plain water after you drink your lemon water or by following with a small snack of cheese, which can help neutralize acids, according to the ADA.

Don’t rush to brush your teeth after drinking lemon water, though. In fact, you should wait an hour before you brush after eating acidic foods to give your saliva a chance to naturally wash away acids and re-harden your enamel, per the ADA.

Water Brash: Know How To Deal With This Gerd Symptom

Have you ever felt a bout of stomach acid spurting into your throat making you salivate more? Then you are suffering from water brash or acid brash, a symptom of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease that leaves a sour taste on your tongue making you feel extremely uncomfortable.

In severe cases, water brash can cause heartburn. If you are facing frequent acid or water brash, see a doctor immediately as it can damage the lining of your esophagus.

Acid reflux is a situation in which your stomach acid moves from your stomach into your esophagus and sometimes into your mouth. The esophagus is pretty sensitive, so many people report feeling a burning sensation in their chest or throat when this happens. This is often called heartburn.

Sometimes youll hear people talk about GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease. GERD and acid reflux are very closely related, and often people will use the terms interchangeably.

Sang Hoon Kim, MD, chief of gastroenterology at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens, agrees that water can be helpful. “Water raises the pH of your stomach, dilutes the acid, and helps neutralize and even clear the acid in your esophagus,” Dr. Kim says.

Why Does Oatmeal Give Me Heartburn

Just what the title says. I love the stuff, but no matter what formoat groats from scratch, Quaker instant, oatmeal cookiesit gives me hideous heartburn about 45 minutes to an hour after I eat it. Plain oatmeal does it just as badly as a homemade oatmeal cookie. After working out this morning I had half a cup of Cracklin Oat Bran cereal with almond milk, and sure enough I was bolting for the Tums half an hour later when I felt it coming on.Everything I read says it should be the opposite, and that a diet high in fiber should help keep heartburn at bay. I can eat the greasiest, spiciest meal on the face of the planet and be just fine, nothing gives me heartburn like oatmeal. What gives?

Well, your reaction is certainly paradoxical, as fiber is generally recognized as reducing the frequency of GERD in some patients.

However, I can hypothesize that with some individuals, the bulk of the fiber may distend the stomach as the fiber swells with liquid, thus expanding the stomach and relaxing the sphincter which is supposed to be a one-way valve to prevent acid from migrating back up into the esophagus.

Again, thats my wild-ass hypothesis.
