Medicines That Can Help
We’ve come a long way in the treatment of indigestion, heartburn and peptic ulcers, and it’s all down to advances in medicines.
When I was a medical student, it was fairly common for people to need surgery to control their symptoms – these days tablets like PPIs keep acid under control much better.
Sometimes a germ calledHelicobacter pylori can make indigestion worse. Your doctor may perform a breath, stool or blood test for this and if necessary, give you a one-week course of treatment with three different tablets to get rid of it. This doesn’t always work and it involves taking several tablets a day and often having to avoid even a sip of alcohol for a week, but it can greatly reduce the chance of symptoms returning.

Acid Reflux Or Heartburn
Unfortunately, peanut butter can cause some major discomfort in your chest and throat. Why? Peanuts are higher in fat than some other nuts, which means they aggravate whats called the lower esophageal sphincter , a bundle of muscles that look like a flap at the end of your esophagus. Fatty foods can cause the LES to relaxbut not in a good way. You need your LES to stay strong and mighty because its what seals the bottom of your esophagus and protects it from stomach acid.
So, when fatty foods make your LES relax, stomach acid can creep up into your esophagus, giving you symptoms of acid reflux and heartburn. Ouch! However, as long as youre eating the nut butter in small servings throughout the week, you may avoid this problem altogether. What may cause heartburn in one individual may not cause it in another. Everyone is different so you may find a small cup of coffee with food doesn’t cause you heartburn anymore but could still cause heartburn in someone else. If you begin to make a list of food and drink items that cause you to experience heartburn, you will know which ones to avoid, which ones to reduce in serving size, and which ones will require eating with other non-heartburn causing foods.
Foods That Can Cause Acid Reflux And Heartburn
Here are the top foods to avoid if you have acid reflux.
1.Citrus fruit Foods that are acidic can cause acid reflux. Citrus fruits, like tangerines, lemons, and oranges, are some of the most commonly eaten acidic foods. Avoid them is a good idea, but you should also stay away from the fruit juices made from them: orange juice, pineapple juice, and grapefruit juice can all easily cause reflux.
2.Garlic and onion:Garlic is a noted anti-inflammatory and often considered a superfood. However, many people with heartburn find that garlic and onions can trigger their conditions. It depends on the person, so its important to test the effect garlic or onions may have on you. Sometimes, people dont realize that garlic is the trigger, as its found in other foods such as Caesar salad dressing or marinara sauce.
3. Chocolate: Chocolate is one of the worst foods that cause heartburnits high in fat, high in cocoa, and it contains stimulants, all which can cause acid reflux. Dark chocolate is likely safer than milk chocolate, but it should still be avoided.
4. Tomatoes:Tomatoes dont seem very acidic, but the truth is they are packed with citric and malic acid, which can help cause acid reflux. Tomatoes and tomato products should be avoided entirely, including marinara sauce, tomato juice, and pizza sauce.
6. Fried foods: Foods even higher in fat than dairy are fried foods, including fried chicken, french fries, onion rings, and breaded calamari.

Can Dairy Cause Heartburn
If spice is said to fire up heartburn, milk has a reputation for being a stomach-soothing, acid neutralizer. Research, however, suggests whole milk increases acid production in the stomach increasing the risk of heartburn. One study involving almost 400 heartburn sufferers showed nearly 40 percent reported worsening symptoms after drinking whole milk. Using low-fat milk or plant-based milk such as soy, oat or rice is less likely to cause problems.3

These tasty, healthy fruits are unfortunately also very acidic and irritating to the stomach and esophagus. When coupled with stomach acids that creep up into the esophagus and cause uncomfortable heartburn, reflux just gets worse. Avoid tomatoes and tomato-based products this includes a wide range of foods, such as ketchup, pizza with tomato sauce, pasta sauce, and chili. Steer clear of them to better manage your heartburn.

Complications Of Gerd And Acid Reflux
Ulcers Stomach acid in the esophagus can cause ulcers. These ulcers have the potential to bleed. To check for bleeding ulcers, your doctor may recommend a stool sample test called hemocult.
Stricture Damage caused by acid reflux can cause the esophagus to scar and narrow. This is called stricture. Over time, stricture could cause a blockage of food and require treatment. The scar tissue is a result of ulcers that occur and heal over time.
Lung and throat problems Acid reflux in the throat could lead to irritation or inflammation of the vocal cords or a sore throat. If the acid is inhaled into the lungs, it could cause aspiration pneumonia or symptoms of asthma. If the acid reflux is chronic, it could eventually cause permanent lung damage including pulmonary fibrosis or bronchiectasis.
Barrettâs esophagus Barrettâs esophagus occurs when the cells in the lower esophagus transform. The transformation is usually caused by damage to the esophageal lining, most often from chronic acid reflux or GERD. There is a small chance these cells may develop into cancer. Patients with Barretts esophagus should have an upper endoscopy done periodically to look for early signs of cancer.
Esophageal cancer Barrettâs esophagus is a major risk factor for developing esophageal cancer. The rate of esophageal cancer is on the rise, but relatively few people with GERD develop Barrettâs esophagus and even fewer people with Barrettâs esophagus develop esophageal cancer.
What Is The Treatment For Heartburn
The health care professional will recommend treating heartburn in a stepwise fashion. For mild or occasional symptoms, simple lifestyle modifications may be enough. The next step is nonprescription antacids such as Maalox, Mylanta, Tums, or Rolaids. Other treatments include acid blockers and even surgery. In most cases, one or more of these treatments provide relief from heartburn and prevent it from turning into a more serious disease.
I take nonprescription antacids for heartburn, but they don’t seem to help.
Nonprescription antacids are only part of the treatment for heartburn. They can work very well, but these antacids alone usually can’t stop heartburn. A health care professional will probably recommend that the patient make lifestyle changes in addition to other treatments.

Can Alkaline Water Give You Heartburn
An interesting study by Kaufman & Johnston investigated that potential benefits of pH 8.8 alkaline drinking water as an adjunct in the treatment of reflux disease. They set out to test whether consuming water with a pH level of 8.8 could inactivate human pepsin more effectively than conventional-pH water such as those straight from the tap or bottled varieties .
The study found that pH 8.8 alkaline water irreversibly inactivated human pepsin and its hydrochloric acid-buffering capacity far exceeded that of those conventional forms of drinking water.
The University of Maryland has also suggested that drinking filtered water throughout the day can help prevent heartburn.
