Possible Causes Of Bloating In Upper Abdomen

Why Does My Heart Hurt Sometimes?

Abdominal bloating is a health condition in which the upper abdomen is gaseous, may be visibly swollen or distended, and feels uncomfortably full. Its a common complaint among both children and adults, and the symptoms can be difficult to live with. Moreover, it can also be accompanied by burping or belching, pain, excessive gas or flatulence, swallowing of air, and abdominal rumbling.

Delaying Treatment For Gerd May Lead To Complications

If GERD goes untreated, it can lead to more serious complications. One such issue is esophagitis, which is inflammation in the esophagus. Hagan says that if esophagitis is not treated, you may develop a stricture, which is a narrowing of the esophagus that can lead to esophageal pain and affect proper swallowing.

Another complication of GERD is a condition called Barretts esophagus . Over time, the stomach acid causes cells in the lining of the esophagus to look more like the stomach lining, says Hagan. These changes, which happen on a cellular level, may in rare cases lead to a form of esophageal cancer. According to the Mayo Clinic, BE is more common in:

  • White males
  • People older than age 50
  • Smokers
  • People who are overweight

Esophageal cancer is relatively rare, making up just 1 percent of all cancer diagnoses in the U.S., according to the American Cancer Society. However, over the past few decades, the incidence rate of esophageal adenocarcinoma has been on the rise in North America and Western Europe, according to a report published in 2019 in the Journal of Gastroenterology.

Furthermore, a study published in January 2021 in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research, found that this form of cancer is on the rise in younger adults: Between 1975 and 2015, the incidence rate of esophageal adenocarcinoma increased by an average of 2.9 percent per year.

How To Identify Heartburn

Heartburn has nothing to do with your heart. Its a condition that occurs in the esophagus when a small amount of stomach acid escapes your stomach and sits in your lower esophagus. The acids create an uncomfortable burning sensation that, because of its location near the heart, has been given the name heartburn.

Mild heartburn can pop up on occasion for a variety of reasons, but sometimes it can hinder your regular daily activity. If it gets that intense, or it seems like it wont go away or is consistent over many days, it is important to have it checked.

Can Bloating Be Prevented

Why does my stomach hurt so bad Alhimar.com

To keep your digestive system working well, follow a healthy diet and eat at least 30g of fibre every day. Cut down on processed and fatty foods, and drink less alcohol. Drink plenty of water and take any medicines as directed by your doctor.

Dont overeat, and try to eat more slowly. Eating regularly will help to prevent digestive problems.

Regular exercise is also important for your gut because it strengthens the muscles in your tummy and stimulates the digestive system to push food through. It also helps with stress, which affects the nerves in the digestive system and can slow down digestion.

Smoking is very bad for your digestion. If you smoke, try to quit now.

What Are The Signs & Symptoms Of Gerd

Often, people who have GERD notice that they regularly have the pain of heartburn in the chest or stomach. This can last up to a couple of hours. Many notice their heartburn is worse after eating.

Regurgitation when food and liquid containing stomach acid comes back up into the throat or mouth is also a sign of GERD. But, like heartburn, occasional regurgitation is common for everyone.

Other symptoms of GERD include:

  • a sore, raw throat or hoarse voice
  • a frequent sour taste of acid, especially when lying down
  • a feeling of burping acid into the mouth
  • trouble swallowing
  • bad breath

What Causes Sharp Stomach Pain After Eating Fried Foods

Sharp stomach pain, especially if it lasts for several hours, should never be ignored, and you should consult about it with your doctor!

If fried chicken or french fries cause you a sharp stomach ache, it usually means a more serious problem than simple indigestion.

The most likely causes of such pain are gallbladder, pancreas, or liver problems. All these organs play an important role in the digestion process and the high fat content of fried foods makes them work super-hard.

In case you have diseases like gallstones or inflammations, digesting fried foods might result in sharp stomach pain.

Pain on the left side of your abdomen might indicate gallbladder problems, pain on the right is more likely caused by the liver. However, this is the point where you should stop guessing what the cause might be and see a doctor for a proper diagnosis.

Some other common symptoms of problems with your digestive system:

  • vomiting
  • nausea
  • bloating

If you experience very intense pain, have a fever, or yellowish skin, call medical care right away.

You might have some unexpected symptoms after eating fried food, like chest pain and sore throat.

Diagnosis Of Heartburn In Teenagers

Heartburn can be diagnosed based on the symptoms and medical history of your teen. If dietary changes and medications do not improve it, your doctor may order tests to confirm the cause of heartburn. It can be :

  • Radiography : This is a visualization of the esophagus under an x-ray with the help of contrast liquid. Your teen should swallow contrast liquid, such as barium, during this procedure. This method helps to identify structural defects in the esophagus. Contrast may cause nausea and light-colored stool, but it is not something to worry about.
  • Esophageal impedance and pH monitoring: This test helps to identify the acid reflux using specific tubes.
  • Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and biopsy: This test could give clear information about esophageal tissue damages from acid and sphincter function. Your doctor may also collect samples for biopsy during endoscopy. Usually, endoscopy is done in severe and moderate cases of heartburn.

Doctors may order blood tests, breath tests, and stool tests to exclude helicobacter pylori infection that could cause heartburn. The infection is often caused due to the consumption of contaminated food or water.

Causes And Risk Factors

Why Does My Stomach Always Feel Bloated?

The food pipe becomes narrower just before it reaches the stomach. This narrow part is normally kept shut by the muscles in the food pipe and diaphragm. But this doesn’t work properly in GERD. It is often not clear why.

In some people it is caused by a hiatal hernia . The diaphragm is a sheet of muscle that separates the chest and abdominal cavities from each other. The food pipe passes through a small hole in the diaphragm and enters the stomach just below it. In people who have a hiatal hernia, the upper part of the stomach pushes up through the hole in the diaphragm and into the chest cavity. As a result, the diaphragm can no longer help to close the entrance to the stomach.

There is some debate about whether being overweight, smoking and drinking alcohol can affect the sphincter or the risk of reflux and heartburn. Many of those affected say that their symptoms are triggered or made worse by stress or by certain foods or drinks. The symptoms may also get worse after physical activities or through certain positions, such as bending forward or lying down.

Sometimes reflux symptoms and heartburn are caused by a problem with the food pipe. For instance, the food pipe might not move rising stomach juices back down into the stomach fast enough, or it might react very sensitively. The symptoms can also be made worse by medications such as birth control pills and certain drugs against high blood pressure.

Foods That Help Reduce Heartburn

While there is no specific diet that is recommended to prevent heartburn, research has shown that a high-fiber, low-fat diet heavy in lean meats, fruits and vegetables, and whole grains could ease your heartburn symptoms. The following foods may help manage your symptoms:

  • Vegetables/non-citrus fruits

Common Symptoms Of Heart Ache

Your heart is located just behind your breastbone and on the left side of your upper chest. So, many aches related to your heart will be felt in your upper left chest. However, heart pain can be caused by organs, muscles, or ribs in your chest.

Dr. Charles Patrick Davis on MedicineNet explains about some types of chest aches and pains that can cause discomfort. These can be:1

  • Squeezing pain in the middle of your chest that radiates to the left arm
  • Jabbing pains in your chest
  • Discomfort around your heart caused by a rapid heartbeat
  • Aching sensation
  • Constant dull pains in your upper chest
  • Random heart aches that come and go

What Treatments Might The Doctor Give For My Child’s Gerd

If changes at home do not help enough, the doctor may recommend medicines to treat GERD. The medicines work by lowering the amount of acid in your child’s stomach.

Some medicines for GERD in children are over-the-counter, and some are prescription medicines. They include:

  • Over-the-counter antacids
  • H2 blockers, which decrease acid production
  • Proton pump inhibitors , which lower the amount of acid the stomach makes
  • Prokinetics, which help the stomach empty faster

If these don’t help and your child still has severe symptoms, then surgery might be an option. A pediatric gastroenterologist, a doctor who treats children who have digestive diseases, would do the surgery.

Viral Or Bacterial Infection

Heartburn in Pregnancy

Everyone has had a sore throat at some point in their lives. This painful inflammation of the back part of the throat is usually caused by a virus, though there may be other reasons.

In addition to a burning, itchy, or raw throat, especially when swallowing, someone with a viral infection of the throat may also experience a cough, runny nose, hoarseness, and/or diarrhea .

Antibiotics don’t work against viruses. That means the goal of treatment is to manage the symptoms with rest, over-the-counter pain meds, saltwater gargles, and throat lozenges or sprays while the infection runs its course.

Less commonly, the cause of an infection is bacterial, and this is called strep throat. It requires a trip to your healthcare provider for an antibiotic. If left untreated, it can spread and lead to serious issues like rheumatic fever, scarlet fever, and kidney inflammation.

Other signs and symptoms of strep throat often include:

  • Fever
  • Swollen and tender lymph nodes in the neck
  • White patches on the tonsils
  • Body aches

Understanding The Oesophagus And Stomach

When we eat, food passes down the gullet into the stomach. Cells in the lining of the stomach make acid and other chemicals which help to digest food. Stomach cells also make mucus which protects them from damage from the acid. The cells lining the oesophagus are different and have little protection from acid.

There is a circular band of muscle at the junction between the oesophagus and stomach. This relaxes to allow food down but then normally tightens up and stops food and acid leaking up into the oesophagus. In effect, the sphincter acts like a valve.

Reasons Why Your Dogs Stomach Is Hard And What To Do

Heartburn, Acid Reflux, GERD-Mayo Clinic

When your dogs stomach swells or hardens, there may be a serious cause for concern, or it may just be a case of your dog overheating. Its important to know the difference between something that can take care of itself versus something that can cause your dog serious harm.

The four main reasons why your dogs stomach may be hard are Gastric Dilation Volvulus , Peritonitis, Cushings Syndrome, and Ascites. Of course, there may be a few other reasons, but these are the most likely ones. By knowing the symptoms of stomach problems in dogs, you will know what to do in the event of something more serious happening.

Take note that when a dog has stomach swelling or hardness, your pooch may be in critical condition. Swelling in dogs can be fatal if the situation is not remedied promptly. Take your dog to the veterinarian as soon as you notice stomach swelling. A veterinarian is the best person to diagnose your dog because you do not want to misinterpret their symptoms and cause them more harm.

How Does The Doctor Evaluate Heartburn

Your doctor may order several different tests and take the following steps to evaluate persistent heartburn that hasn’t gone away even after you modify factors such as your diet:

  • Your doctor may ask for an EKG to help rule out heart-related problems.
  • Your doctor will perform an examination to see if you have any abdominal mass or a hiatal hernia. A hiatal hernia occurs when the upper part of the stomach and the LES move above the diaphragm.
  • Your doctor will check your blood pressure.
  • Your doctor will take a careful medical history to see if medications are causing the problem.
  • Your doctor may ask for a gastric emptying study to see how fast food goes out of your stomach or a test to show how well the esophagus and the LES work.
  • Your doctor may refer you for an upper endoscopy. In this test, a flexible tube with a tiny camera helps the doctor assess the esophagus and look for damage or abnormalities.

Eat Foods That Are Heartburn Friendly

You dont always have to reach out for medication for fixing health problems. There are some food items that will be able to neutralize your stomach acid and stop that uncomfortable burning sensation inside.

These foods are vegetables, oatmeal, fruits without citric acid, lean meats like chicken, seafood, the whites of eggs, and so on.

All of these will soothe your stomach, but please make sure that you dont eat them too fast.

Mainstream Theory About Gerd And Reflux

Most doctors believe GERD is caused by high stomach acid and a loose or lazy LES . The LES is a muscle that tightly seals the stomach off from the esophagus and prevents acid from flowing up the pipe. With GERD and reflux, the LES does not properly seal.

Foods that encourage the LES to relax and loosen are:

Chocolate

Acid foods like citrus and tomatoes

Onions and garlic

Mint

Alcohol

Things that help tone the LES and keep it tightly shut are foods that are high in fiber like veggies and oatmeal as well as bananas, lean protein, white rice and ginger.

While this diet may help with symptoms, you are stuck in food jail. And that takes a toll.

If you want to be able to go out to eat or have an occasional cocktail without flaring symptoms I believe addressing the root cause of the problem.
